Video – Wellington Silva Compilation

Very rarely has a teenage signing caused such excitement as Wellington Silva has among Arsenal fans. The powerful Brazilian striker may not complete his move to North London for another 12 months, but he is already proving to be a tantalising prospect. Two goals and an assist during a friendly against Dagenham and Redbridge last month were a glowing example of just why the boy is so highly rated.

There is a selection of video clips of his immense talent, but now you can see more of his build up and general play in this 10 minute compilation. It shows his skills, dribbling, pace, power and of course that lethal finishing. Watch it all below, with thanks to commenter ‘Block 5’.

He was a lot smaller than I thought but seems very very tough. Arshavin is small too but do big things on the pitch so maybe he can become our own messi in a few years time.

    J,

Whats the status of the transfer? I read that we paid £3.5M towards him and more to come when he arrives with us. I understand that he needs to be 18 to move to england to play.
Does the age rule also mean that he can go straight into the res or 1st team.

We have paid 3.4 million for him. We’ve paid 65% of that up front, for 65% ownership and the rest will be paid, and he’ll become 100% an Arsenal player, when he turns 18 next January.

He’ll probably play a little in the Reserves then first-team.

I know most people haven’t seen Wellington Silva play but I have few friends living in Braail who are also Arsenal fans and when they heard about Wellington being bought by arsenal
some of them who lived in his area went to check him out one or two of his game and they couldn’t believe how great he was.
They couldn’t believe his dribbling and his fantastic eye for the goal
did you guys know he scored 7 goals in one game and he wasn’t playing a central role in that match he was playing on the wings
This guy can be the next Robinho (the only concern they had was that he wasn’t too tall but who in Brazil is)

I think this boy is one of the most talented young players i have ever seen. He seems to strike fear into the opposition, like a combination of Tevez, Messi and Big Ron (Brazilian Ronaldo) all put together. Its amazing why Fluimise decided to sell him. Can’t wait for him to join up with Benik Afobe and we should have a fantastic youth partnership.

he’s 17 and this site says that he’s 170 which is about 5’7 but my friend said that he looked a lot smaller than 5’7 so hopefully they are wrong and he grows a few inches in a year or two and he will play on the wings our 4-3-3
That’s where he does the most damage.

Ok.. now I will have to say this signing is really exciting. Who knows if he will turn into the new Ronaldinho but it is exciting that we are actually signing the top attacking talent at his age in brazil. It bugged me when we did go after Alexandre Pato, missed out on Robinho, and when Ronaldinho couldnt be signed because of work permit issues. Now we actually got a true top brazilian attacking talent.

Yes we missed out on Ronaldinho when he was at Gremio because there was a passport scandal and he did not qualify for a work permit. Wenger was trying to sign him, but you know the rest of the story.

On the Neymar thing….he is a good talent but not the talent everyone thinks. He is just as small as Robinho but with less dribbling ability. He really looks good in the brazilian football because everytime he gets touched the referees blow for a foul. They are entertaining competitions but everytime a player dives it is really hard to keep watching. Neymar is a good player but if he joins the English league, I am betting he will be a flop. I am actually a bigger fan of Paulo Enrique from Santos.

Yes, the main games are shown on a channel called goltv in america. The Brasileiro is the national competition similar to the english premier league but the also have another competition after the Brasileiro in which each state has its own league. Here they show the Paulista which is the Sao Paulo state championship which has teams like Corinthians, Palmeiras, Santos, Sao Paulo. Currently this is the competition that is the one going on.

In england physicality is the name of the gmae so I expect him to be injured for his first few years and when he grows stronger then he will really get into his own.

Um..Messi looked pretty good verse Chelsea whn he was 18 in the champions league. Plus he scored in the finals verse man Utd and his team did beat chalsea in the semifinals. I really think it just matters about the style of play. Arsenal play a very european passing skillfull style which suits players like him. Fabregas and Arshavin are both small but that doesnt hold them back. Small players do have problems in the EPL if they are on teams that dont have a lot of off the ball movement a 1,2 play like Man City and Robinho. In England teams, often get really spread out which leaves smaller guys trying to hold the ball up with no help. If Robinho had been playing for Arsenal, he would have been a huge player.

so do you think he can make it here? I for one say yes as our scouting network is well known and they are watching players over years. As he was in England for trial he scored in 45 minutes 4 goals. Yes, it was against a youth team. But which player scores 4 goals in 45 minutes? I am asking you as it seems you have a clue about brazilian football!!

It is to early to say how big of a player he will become and to be honest I havent seen a whole lot of him because he did play for the first team alot in the Brasiliero. I did see him play in the u17 world cup where he was the 2nd youngest player on the brazil team and he looked very good when he came on. To be honest, attacking skill full players are usually exactly as they look on these 9 minute long highlights. He actually is a vary skillfull tricky type players with fantastic finishing and is very quick. I am truly excited about this talent.

I now most of them were brought from other youth academies but they have all come through our academy.
and I really most of them will make into the first team and some of them will become world class player
What I want to see is more payers come through the ranks (9-10yrs) and actually make it into the first team.

I could be wrong but I think the fact that it is a north london based team which I believe is a wealthier place. Alot of the top talents come from poor background which a lot of times gives young players a certain drive. So you are less likely to have a young player with that drive to make it if they dont really have to.

Andrew… I agree with that. It is kind of in my reflection in another cooment how England is more about teaching hustle than skill. We have the same issue in America.

I think Wenger is helping English football by developing skilled players and letting them blossem and the first Example of that is Jack Wilshere. A true creative player that can become a world great.

Beilieve me no one in England plays the same way we play and most of the EPL managers don’t want to play the way we play.
They play one way and one way only and that’s play long ball and be physical in your approach
there’s only one way to change it and that’s by making referee more strict but I don’t think it will happen. Every league is identified by its style of play
      England – Physical and Speed
      Italy – Tactical
      Spain – Technical

Lol…I love how people persive Italian style of football as “Tactical” when in reality it is just Defensive. It is playing 8 defensive minded players with 3 attacking players. Watching that AC Milan verse Man Utd game, I almost felt bad for Ronaldinho because he was absolutely killing Man Utd but he only had 1 striker and Pato to pick out with a pass in the attacking side of the field while Beckham, Pirlo, and Ambrosini just sat back.

italy is called tactial because in italy managers change formation all the time sometimes 2-3 times a game
and I agree Italy focuses on defense rather than attack that’s probably why they have the best defenders

    • February 23, 2010 at 7:22 am

I dont believe they have the best defenders, but they just look good because they play some defensive. There defenders arent going to be left in vulnerable positions. A huge example is Carlos Puyol. He is one of if not the top defender in the world but he doesnt get credit because no one takes in to consideration that he is often having to cover for attack minded Dani Alves, a horrible, yes HORRIBLe keeper in Valdes, and a completely attacking team where he is often left in one on one situations. You have to actually watch that man play to understand how good he is.

For all the skill and ability the thing I love the most about this is it shows the kid has got work rate. He created a lot of chances just by pressing the defenders and not giving up chasing the ball. I think that’s something we really lack at the moment so delighted we have that. Can’t see how they could reject a work permit for him, he’s prodigious.

I think your statement is the thing that hold Englsih football back a little bit. This perseaved notion of “hustle” that you want every player to have. Yes attackers should play a little defence like if the ball is around them they should go try to win it but Attacking players shouldnt just be running around like the are Michael Essein, because they will get tired not to mention they wont be getting open to receive the ball and create attacking plays. I doubt England will ever have a Ronaldinho or C. Ronaldo because the emphasis on “hustle” over shadows the emphasis on “skill”. Players play different positions and have different abilities and those are what you should expect a player to perform.

Dude, you got to read the other comments. It is tricky with this new format to keep up. Jack Wilshere is not a product of the “English system”. Wenger runs a very European system and allows players to play with freedom and technique.

yeah there are a lot of comments now on here!!! :-) Wilshere was 9 so Afobe!!! Henderson was 9 or 10, too. LAnsbury was 8 or something. And of course we took players from other acadamies but they dont play like we do. We catch them at a young age and develop them.
Bayern Munich is doing the same!!! They are looking for local talent at such ages and develop them. Even Barca is doing the same!!

the whole idea with the reserve league is to develop and give gametime to players who is not fit or just back-up players for the first team. If the reserve league had 38 games surely arsenal would have had half of the reserve squad injured. They are not suppose to be injured or carded in the reserve league. Its fine how it is. If players are good enough to play in championship, premier league or league 1 they should be loaned out but of course some needs to stay for back-up for the first team.

Hi JS that icelandic winger sigurdsoon we have got on trial has he finished yet? I really do think Arsenal lack wingers especially left and right wingers who can beat full backs.

We need some Alex hlebs people who can dribble, and see a pass.

Also can some please describe Cesar Azpilcueta from Osausna from me i hhavent see him at all.

His he one of these new generations of full backs. Wingers who can defend.

I really like the look of van wiel of ajax hes like a eboue but a better dribbler and more skillful

Cesar Azpilcueta is more of a technical player rather then a pacy up and down wing back. Van Wiel is actually the opposite of what you said. Eboue is more of a skillfull attacker while van wiel in known for his defensive qualities. He also can be deployed at centerback. A right back to watch out for is Jonathon from Cruzeiro. A attacking fullback labeled the “new Maicon”. Also Samuel Inkoom who is only 20 but al ready a starter for ghana and Basel.

ok where as i’m tempted to find the nearest yid and tell them this is the fella who’s gonna be scoring all our goals against you for the next 10 years i’m gonna try and look at this in an analytical sense from what i have seen with my own two eyes……the boy has blistering pace, a very tidy set of feet, magnet ball control, and confidence that i wish some of our current crop where blessed with….all very exciting indeed….however…..he will never again in his career have so much time on the ball as he did in the video clips i have watched, i get the impression the standard of football he is playing in most flatters to decieve…..i say all this baring in mind he could be in line for first team football on his arrival assuming he is not loaned out, which envitably leaves you asking the question ‘can this dude cut in the premier league’…we’ve seen time and time again brazilians that fail to live up to expectations…our Manure friends in the north will vouch for that….i think a realist view point needs to be taken to avoid doing what we british seem to do all too well, and that is pile pressure on the lad before he has kicked a ball by declaring ‘sacre bleau, this boy has the va va voom to be the new thierry’….i’ve heard it with other players before and lets just say their still on a long road to trying to fill those boots…..he undoubtably has alot of talent and i for one am very happy we’re landing players of his calibre….but lets just bare in mind his age and that the video’s clearly show his composure in front of goal does not yet match his superior technically abilities, thus implying he will need time to adjust to life here and the football, the pace etc, the mental aspects of the game…all of which will come in time…..there’s always the possibility he will turn up and score every game he plays in, but i’m reserving my judgement, putting it to the back of my mind and will let his football do the talking….i of course want the very best for the club and hope and pray we will be singing there’s only one ‘super welly’ in the next few years but lets leave him to get his head down and crack on with his development for now…….much love all

Um…The statement “Ive seen many of Brazilians fail in the premier league”. I have seen many of English players fail in the premier league…what is your point? The way Arsenal plays is perfectly suited for a creative brazilian player. Also the quality of teams he was playing looked bad? The black and Red team(Atlas) he was playing against was in the finals of the Nike Cup which is the most prestigious u15 tourney in the world. By the way he won the player of the tournement. As for the rest of the highlight, I doubt the Brazilian youth set up is any worse then the English u18s seeing as Brazil produce more good players than any other country in the world.

Guys I truly cringe whenever I hear someone referred to as a “yid”. I’m as big an Arsenal fan as the next guy on here but even if it is an excepted term to use for a Spur’s fan, it still is ignorant and racist. Me being Jewish is secondary in this matter. I hate seeing racial epithets of any kind. I know it exists, but I’ll fight it everytime I come across it. If you are wondering why I am an Arsenal fan even though I am Jewish, it is because I had no idea that Spurs were heavily backed by the Jewish population of North London, and I wasn’t aware of the history of Spurs. I was an Arsenal fan long before I knew any of that lol.

The stop-start dragback thing he does at 1.13-ish is amazing

I just founnd something uspettng that I did not know. David Beckham finished 2nd in the Fifa world player of the year voting twice. It is actually making me feel alittle sick that this award is so horribly ran and the fact that it has such a big impact on history. 20 years from now some kid is going to look at that list and think David Beckham was once the 2nd best player in the entire WORLD. It was bad enough that Thierry Henry didnt win 1 and Cannavaro won in 2006 even though Ronaldinho was by far the best player in the world that year not to mention Cannavaro was playing for a corrupt team that got caught fixing matches.

I dont know where all this association with height and football talent come into play, but when since did a football player ever have to be tall to be considered great, pele, maradonna, Garrincha, messi, all have average height of around 5’7 but are giants on the pitch, some people have to get the notion out of there heads that tall=talented otherwise we will end up with a team full of John Hartson’s and chris kiwomya’s ….

Rico there’s a difference between one player and an entire team
now I am not saying we are midgets but we play in england which is all about physicality and to be a successful team in this league you need players who can get rough and hold their own and since most people know only one way to play (long balls) you need height to defend against it.
I dont mind 2-4 players being small in a team but when most of them are under 6 feet then that causes problem against team packing most above 6 feet.
I read a statistic between us and chelsea our average height is 5’10 and theirs is 5’11 so not much difference but the thing that made the difference was their weight their average weight was 78kg whereas our was 70kg.
This gap of 8kg means the difference between lightweight and heavy weight.

Andrew, what does our attacking players being short have to do with the fact that teams play long balls? Arshavin isnt playing defence on those long balls.

I was talking about team as a whole but even upfront if you dont have height then crosses are almost useless.

Here is a fact for you then…..Did you know that Werder Bremen has the tallest team in europe? They are only in 6th place in Germany. I agree that it helps to have height at centerback and a target man but that is it. Diaby is tall but he does his best work with his feet. Thomas Vermaelen is only 6 foot which by no meens is a giant when it comes to centerbacks but he is great in the air (ask peter crouch about that). Height is a completely over rated thing when it comes to a sport that the ball is at your feet.

This guy looks very promising, although his small he posses good strength, pace, accuracy and looks very trick on the wings. I think wengers got his walcott replacement already. Soon as his eligable straight into the first team i say. i think he offers a great threat we dont have currently a player like him.

i won’t stop stop using the term yid coz i don’t mean it in a racial sense at all, you wanna talk politics go on the bbc website, spud yido whatever its all the same to me…its quite easy to get defencsive about i know as the word is essentially the same but don’t take the stance that i’m reffering to jewish people coz i’m not its their nickname and millions of people call them that, and to the other dude by standard of football i mean precisely that it is youth football and he is potentailly in line for a place in the first team squad when he arrives, can he make that step? listing pitfalls or potential problems to try and keep level headed isn’t my expressed opinion its ment objectively to emphasise a point not predict he will fail coz i think he’s not good enough…if you’d read my comment properly then you’ll notice i think he’s very good for his age and am fairly confident he will do well in the future, trying not to heep too much expectation on him like we have burdened theo with the thierry tag is my intention….i’m very optimistic but it does my brain in when sickofant supporters create a band wagon before the guys even gets here….

A caught the Brazil v USA u-17 Game (USA Won) that Wellington featured in. Personally I thought he was a bit of a bore. When challenged he couldn’t dribble well and was easilly moved off the ball. I didn’t think he read the game very well and remember comenting to myself that if this is the future of Brazil, they are on the way down. That said, I hope I am wrong as I want nothing but success and glory for Arsenal! Hopefully Coach Bradey can bring the kid alone.
