Arsenal To Play FC Twente As Pre-Season Takes Shape

Arsenal will be competing in the Southend United FC Youth Cup for the second year running, as the club’s pre-season program takes shape.

A whole host of young Gunners will feature in the traditional friendly against Barnet on Saturday after two weeks of all action training. Then on Tuesday Neil Banfield will get his plans underway as he takes an Arsenal XI to Crawley Town. The side selected for this game will vary depending on which youngsters impress Arsène Wenger and are taken off to the Austrian training camp.

On Saturday the 24th the Under 18’s head to Southend’s Roots Hall Stadium for the second time in as many years, ahead of the Southend United FC Youth Cup. This competition was called the Toomey Trophy last year, and this year it sees West Ham United and FC Twente join The Shrimpers and Arsenal in the two day event.

Arsenal play FC Twente at 11.30am while Southend play West Ham in the afternoon kick off. The winners of each game play each other in Sunday’s final. There will also be a third/fourth play off match. Tickets for this tournament are reasonably priced and Southend have told Young Guns they’re close to getting sponsors, so prices could come down further. Check their website for more details.

On the same day, Banfield’s Arsenal XI will face Welling United at 3pm. A further four days later they take on their toughest pre-season task in recent years, with newly promoted League One outfit Dagenham and Redbridge. A tasty away game at AFC Wimbledon wraps up their plans on August 7th.

On the 31st of August Arsenal’s Reserves kick off their new Premier Reserve League campaign at Bolton Wanderers’ training centre.

Conor Wickham hes got a similar style to bendtner when he was 16 but maybe bendtner was more faster, better dribbler.

Wickham a big lump but hes looks really good technically well he looked better than afobe and for me is a better all round player than afobe i think we should try and get him

The funny thing is that a few months ago you said something about a few of our youngsters who are more physically developed than others at their age only stand out because of this advantage they have over their peers (namely, Afobe and Boateng as well as a few others), yet that doesn’t seem to apply to Wickham as far as you’re concerned. Wickham is easily the most physically developed 17 year old striker i remember seeing and that has held him in good stead up until now. I’m not saying he’s crap or anything like that, but watch when he gets found out simply because he isn’t technically up to the required standards to be a top striker like Afobe.

Sounds good about Wickham but 8 Million? we got Nasri for 12 million, so it sounds like alot of money to spend on a young player who isn’t proven at anywhere near the highest level yet.

Afobe is an absolute class act. Trust me this guy is going to be excellent for us in 4-5yrs.

The Key is his development from here on. He is 17 and will play academy/reserve football next season – his last yr in the U-18s.

No doubt he will have a loan period somewhere in the 11/12 season and indeed 12/13 season.

After that he will be back with us and ready to rock the world

Will Keane from Man Uts also looks a fine prospect

Don’t want us to go anywhere near Conor Wickham or any English prospect developed by other English clubs. Take Wickham as an example…technically he is average..the only reason he is being touted and seen as head and shoulders above others in his peer group is his extraordinary physical size. Wait till others in the same age group catch up physically and he’ll be shown for the overrated lump he is.

Young, English players? Sure. As long as they’ve gone through our system.

I couldn’t agree more mate. He’s nothing special at all and i’d be fussed if we had to shell out £3m for him let alone £8m. I don’t think Wenger wants him tbh. That’s far too much money for him and i reckon it’s just bollocks as his agent and Ipswich (who really need the money) are trying to drive up the price so those planks down the road pay top dollar.

John you truely are a complete tool.

Why do you constantly dig the boot into Afobe, what is wrong with you?

I am getting sick of having to see your comments always coming back to him, has he been shagging your daughter/sister/mother/wife on the kitchen table or something……

I love reading the vast majority of posts on this site and think its absolutely brilliant (excellent work J) but your negativity towrads one of our most highly promising yoots is revolting. I am all for constructive criticism and even posts where you get something off your chest but you are taking it too FAR!

You seriously have a problem !
