Pedro Botelho Joins FC Cartagena On Loan

Pedro Botelho has joined Spanish Segunda outfit FC Cartagena on loan for the 2010-2011 season. The Brazilian now begins his third straight campaign away from the club after an application for a work permit was denied.

Botelho has cut short his holiday in South America and will spend the weekend in Murcia undertaking a medical. He will then be presented to the media and fans at the club’s Cartagonova stadium at lunch time on Monday. Pedro joins former Arsenal defender Pascal Cygan at the club, which was only formed in 1995. First-team goalkeeper Manuel Almunia is among the notable names to have played for Cartagena, who finished 5th in the league last season.

Arsenal had attempted to win a work permit for the 20-year-old, who is still short of the criteria needed for Spanish citizenship. However, he now begins the third loan of his short career, following spells with UD Salamanca and Celta Vigo. Pedro told the media during his presentation at Celta that it would be his last year away from the club.

You can follow Botelho’s progress throughout the summer right here on Young Guns.

Wow yet another loan spell… this will be his 4th straight season on loan in the spanish segunda! shame he hasn’t stepped up to the primera by now. By the way J, do you know how long he has left on his arsenal contract? think its 1 year? the way its going he’ll be a free agent before he ever actually plays for arsenal!

I think it’s his third season away, mate. And that’s pretty much standard.

^ We can’t do much if his permit was denied.

Just to clear something up, Pedro joined Arsenal in the summer 2007. He wasn’t allowed to link up with Salamanca on loan until the December. So he’s been away for four years, but this is third straight loan spell. The first spell he had at Salamanca was just a few months

Guys, this will be his 4TH season on loan in spain… Pedro spent 07/08 and 08/09 on loan at Salamanca ( though his second spell was cut short due to bad relations with their staff). He then spent 09/10 on loan at Celta Vigo, so this upcoming 10/11 loan spell with Cartagena will be Pedro’s 4th SEASON on loan in the spanish segunda. though albeit with a 3rd different club.

I think wenger may be abit wary of ‘killling a young talent’ with the likes of eastmond, coquelin, frimpong, even nordveit there or there abouts as a DM deputy to song…

its never a bad thing to have the best talent at your club
when they sign for a club like arsenal they know competition becomes part of there daily routine
and this guy isnt much older either so he will be in the same boat as the other youngsters

I would say Frimpong is a carbon copy of Song, shall we sell him as well? and Gibbs a carbon copy of Clichy, shall we sell him? Last season we used 41 players in 4 competitions and didnt past the quarter finals in any of the cup competitions. Hopefully this season we will play more games than last year, we will no doubt continue with our same level of injuries so really we could need more players than last season. Why is every one so intent on getting rid of our young players, claiming “he wont make it at Arsenal”. Its not that long ago that players were making their first team debuts in their early 20’s, lets face it United youngsters are around the first team for many years before a decision is made on them and United are a pretty good team arent they?

I think Anders meant that unlike Song or Clichy, Traore isn’t up to it (which, based on his appearences so far, it is hard not to agree with), so why waste energy on a carbon copy of someone that isn’t even good enough

I feel Botelho should be given every opportunity,it can’t be easy playing 3/4 abroad for clubs that you know you have no future with. The reports haven’t been that bad….well, te reports of what he has done on the pitch anyway….

I’m not sure what we would gain from selling him. We’d probably not get more than £500k for him and as he is on loan we’re probably not paying his wages. We may as well keep him and see how he develops.

Disappointing as Wenger suggested a few days ago that he was looking to integrate him into the 1st team squad and was hopeful of gaining a work permit. I see little point in selling him as his value would be very low. We are not paying his wages so may as well see how he goes for another 6 months before making a decision on him. I have to say we do seem to let a lot of players simply run out their contracts.

I’m most disappointed by the fact that he’s not playing in La Liga. What’s the point of him going to the 2nd tier when we’d like to know whether he could cut it with a mid-lower table team in La Liga? Even if he does well in the 2nd tier it really doesn’t tell us much as to whether he’s ready to be a squad player.

JS do you know how much truth was in that Clichy for Melo deal?

The only reason I ask is that I can see Wenger selling Clichy because he loves Gibbs. Traore and Botelho then become back-up LB’s after this season. That’s the only reasonably justifiable reason for keeping him to be honest.

Melo for Clichy is never going to happen
althought if Melo was ever on the market wenger will now and he might buy him but a swap with clichy is impossible

bc, he’s been on loan now for what ?..2 and a half seasons and has only succeeded in pissing off his coaches. He’s not a LB, like Traore he still hasn’t learnt how to defend, they are more like the traditional winger in a 442 or a WB in a 541, so in our formation he’d have to fit in LF somewhere in line behind Arshavin, Vela, Nasri, Rosicky, Wilshere, hell even Galindo & Wellington will be here before him. But then i suppose like you say you can never have enough, right?

Clearly the club were expecting and wanting him to join this season. He is listed in the Arsenal magazine this month as one of the young professionals at the club. They tried to get a work permit for him and failed. That is outside of the club’s control. If they thought he was not good enough, they would not have bothered. I wish some of you would just wind your necks in, stop whinging, stop thinking you know better than the manager and scouts and let those in the position to do something about it do their jobs!

Didn’t we do something similar with Vela?

He was bought and loaned for a fair while before finally making apps for the 1st XI.

I hope Vela shows some good form next season. He has wicked pace but I think his finishing in big games or when it matters needs improving

Will pedro qualify to play in England after this loan spell? He must have something about him baring in mind Arsenal are still interested in him despite his temprement. I suspect that until we have seen him training/ playing at Arsenal for a season, Wenger will not sell him.

I think Traore could be on the way out….

Midway through this loan spell, Pedro will surely have clocked up the 3 years required for a Spanish passport, and therefore will not need a work permit.

Well, if it’s true we had plans to use him this season, will we now consider signing someone else?

However good he is potentially (aside from his habit of falling out with managers), it looks like it’ll now be a couple of seasons before he’s much use to us – i.e. this season, plus at least one more for him to learn to cope with the thugs of the Premiership. And that’s assuming he can ever adapt from the slower, more civilised game in Brazil and Spain, which is all he’s known up to now. Or that he’ll want to adapt. Why would a technically skilful player ever choose to play English-style football? It’s not a league where a player like Xavi or Messi could flourish.

On the subject of players who’ve fallen out with the managers while on loan, what’s happened to Kerrea Gilbert. He looked so good three years ago.

I like botelho we dont have many players who can go past players with pace and trickery.

I still we lack dribblers in the first team.

Against tight defences you need players whoc an go past players and break defensive systems instead of passing it through

Where is Kerrea Gilbert? Do we still own him?

What’s the situation now with Jay Simpson? I’m sure I read on this site that he had an offer from Omonia. If so, what happened, why did he turn it down?

I also believe I read on this site that Wellington Silva was going to be in Austria – ‘Wellington jets in for pre-season training’? Did I dream this headline? Or did someone (Wenger? Flum., Silva?) change their mind?

Is it true our goal-keeping coach is leaving? One site is reporting that he is, for family reasons, but they could, I suppose, just be making it up?

    So many questions…

Been to the Southend Cup this afternoon, we beat Twente Enschede 3-1 and now play West Ham or Southen tomorrow in the final. Samir Bhimoutine was the pick of the bunch with 2 goals Zac Ansah go the other. Interesting to see Sean McDermott in goal, i thought he was going to be starting at Welling?? Only 3 players i had not seen before, obviously Ebicillio, Hayden & Siafa?

The kids enjoyed it but did not want to stay for the 2nd match and quite frankly i cant blame them

    Thanks, Andrew.

Wellington is in London? I haven’t seen that reported anywhere, this site included.

Yes, I’m sure Jay Simpson will be sold, if a buyer comes in before his contract runs out, otherwise I assume he’ll just eventually, like Gilbert, be released on a free? What I still don’t understand is why he turned down the offer from the excellent Omonia. I am trying hard not to think ill of English players, not to see them as lacking in courage and professional commitment, but it’s increasingly difficult when they seem so reluctant to leave their home comforts, hoping (apparantly in Jay Simpson’s case) that a lower-league English club will want them rather than grabbing the chance to live in another country and play CL football for an ambitious small club. Did the offer from Omonia not exist? Did I simply imagine that I’d read about it here on this site? Have asked about it and why it fell through more than once, but J hasn’t replied, so I guess it’s time to give up.

Hello from a Norwegian Gooner in Austria… Thx for a great site JS.

I have been on both traningssession today, and this is my input to this site.
The morningsession was most running and AW drill some defensive stuff, and some freekicks. Nasri and Song shots best, and none leftfooted player score from freekics.. (VanP was not there) In the evning AW played a game with 20 players. In the Green team :
    Alm1 – Sagna, Clichy, Djou20, Håvard – Song, Nasri, AA23 – Vela, Cha29
They played against the Yellow for 6 short halfs, total of 30 min. In the Yellow team :
Vito – Eboue, Gibbs, Kos6, Verm5 – Frimpong, Rosicky, Walcott – JET, Wilshere.
(Maybe this two sides will play each half on tuesday)
The Yellow team won 2-0 after goals from JET and a lovley chip from Wilshere. Both goals came in the first 10 min. What I saw : The Green team struggle to create chances. Only Nasri impresses me in front of goal (in the Green team) AA23 tried to pass Eboue 5-6 times without luck, and he looked no good at the moment. Nobody runs more than Eboue today. JET and Jack impresses me inside the box. Vito and Alm1 made some good saves, and I think AW will play them on tuesday. I think all of the 4 CD played well. Kos6 was very good and gave Cha29 no chances. Verm5 and Kos6 could be our CD-pair this year. Just before the end Djou20 fouled Wilshere, and he stays down…. But he walked out and looks OK.
Today Eastmond runs on his own, and Diaby (calf), Traore (hamstring), Henderson and Landsbury did not show up at all. Fabi and Szczesny was there, but did not play the game.
Thats all from Bad Walterdorf !!
