Youngsters Left To Sweat On Austria Decision

Arsène Wenger described Saturday’s 4-0 win over Barnet as a chance to look at all those in contention for a first-team place. The Frenchman now takes his more established names off to Austria for an intensive training camp, and the Holy Grail for the young Gunners is to make the plane and prove they can make the cut come August.

Leading the queue is the collection of last seasons loanees. Jack Wilshere is the only real certainty of the group, although Håvard Nordtveit should also travel due to the current number of first-team centre backs in the ranks. Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and Henri Lansbury both looked a little unfit against Barnet and are at risk, while Jay Simpson is a rank outsider.

Simpson bagged a brace against Barnet but failed to really show any quality. The late withdrawal of Eduardo from the squad presented the Enfield-born striker a chance to put himself in the shop window. Wenger has already told Jay he can leave, as long as the price is right. Yet whenever the 21-year-old has been given a start by the boss, he’s scored goals.

Nacer Barazite is another interesting case. He failed to maintain the excellent goal scoring record he holds against Barnet, but did look inventive and fresh alongside Samir Nasri in the middle of the park. Nacer is yet to travel to Austria and if he misses out this time, it’s hard to see where he’ll fit into Arsène’s plans.

Others hoping to travel include Spanish centre back Ignasi Miquel and Reserve goalkeeping duo Wojciech Szczęsny and Vito Mannone. The former has had his potential loan move shelved, and both are hoping to up root Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski and becoming first choice.

The squad is expected to be announced shortly.

I just saw the youtube video of him against barnet and frankly, he looks a mediocre player to me. he presses well, but better players will just dance around him the way he just lunges in. his passing looked poor (the receiver never got the ball in a place where he could do something with it) and he himself seemed to receive the ball in bad situations (always facing his CBs).

Szczesny has had his loan move shelved? Do you have any more information on that?

I don’t think Szczesny would be happy to stay at Arsenal in his current standing of 3rd/4th choice GK and hardly playing, so I presume that if his loan move has been cancelled that he will be made no.1 or no.2 in the pecking order.

that would be awesome!!! this guy has it all for a great GK!!!! But I still think Wenger is looking for an established GK. So it will be 1. new GK, 2. Tech9 and 3. MAnnone. Hopefully Flapianski will be out or going for a loan spell!!

Vela wont be there he has 4 weeks off from when Mexico exited the WC. Mexico made out of the group stages. Wenger mentioned 6 players back Sagna, Diaby, Clichy, Song, Eboue & Bendtner, but Bendtner is carrying an injury along with Denilson, Eduardo (supposedly), Almunia (sick supposedly), Bartley & Ramsey. Therefore you would have to say we are short for playing Graz, as you cannot expect the world cup players to go straight in, so i reckon quite a few “kids” will make the plane.

it’s all a bit harsh on simpson isn’t it…ok he hasn’t shown much quality in terms of taking the game to the opposition or holding the ball up or combining well in the team’s build up play, but the boy just keeps scoring and scoring for us.

sometimes i think our team could do with a useless meatpole up front who just provides the finishing. simpson could be it. especially if eduardo is leaving.

with the multitude of sitters that this team creates every game, we could really do with someone to just sniff the ball out and stick it in the net.

i would like us to keep him and give him a few games this season, if he’s surplus to requirements, at least his price will go up by a couple mil.

If Eduardo does leave, I would like to see Simpson stay and take the 4th choice CF spot. Like you say gunner17, he’s not going to be a world class player but Jay knows where to run and how to put a ball in the net. He works hard, he has pace, he’s smart, he’s had some PL experience and he scores goals. He will bust a lung to get into the box and on the end of something, and can create things for others out of sheer hard work and pressure.

Also, has anybody else noticed that Wilshere and Simpson seem to have forged a fantastic understanding of one another? Jack picked him out against Barnet without even looking, and Jay knew exactly where that pass was going.

If I remember correctly, Simpson’s brace in the CC also came from Wilshere passes. It makes me wonder whether with ‘Arsenal-quality’ service, Simpson could become a prolific striker in the PL. Jay might not be a super talent, but then again are Defoe or Bent? Yet they score plenty at this level.

Too many people seem to put Simpson down simply because he’s just not very exciting or precocious, but at 21 he’s still young enough to get much better.

@Wrenny. I believe Simpson’s first against Wigan was through a Wilshere through ball but Vela squared the ball for Simpson’s second.

I thought putting Szczesny out for 1 more season made sense. I would hate to see him make a mistake for the 1st team which may grab the headlines and break his confidence.
He is still young and could benefit from the experience of 1 more season playing every week.
I can still see Frey signing. Unfortunately from what i have seen of him he is another average keeper

It’s a huge call for such a vital position. Ideally he would go on loan to a prem team for a another season, but with the mess we’re left with at gk at the moment he may be the best option. It just feels like his fast-track to the number 1 jersey is too quick but until you give him the chance how do you know? I’m sure Wenger will test him Austria first and then if he’s really on the cards then again during the Emirates cup.

The reason i write down a lineup is not me trying to predict our team but to help people decide whether they’d be happy and confident to see Tech9 as our number 1 on the 15th.
It’s rumored that if we fail to buy then Fabianski will start the season in goal with Tech9 2nd in line, but for me personally i’d be less stressed and my dog more relaxed if it was Tech9.

Arsenal keeper Szczesny not interested in new loan

Wojciech Szczesny has declared he wants to be Arsenal’s No1 – this season.

The young Pole doesn’t want to be shipped out on-loan again.

“I want to fight for my place, whatever that means,” he told Arsenal.com after featuring against Barnet.

“I don’t want to give up my place at Arsenal to go on loan. I went on loan last year, I have proved that I can do a job for Arsenal and now I want to see if I can really do it.

“If I get a chance to prove myself as an Arsenal No 1 then I will take my chances but I just want to get as many chances as I can and show everyone what I am made of.

“I think everybody has got the same target for the pre-season and that is get your place in the team and that is exactly what I am doing.”
    —————————————————————————————————————–
We haven’t bought a new keeper
    Szczesny is an incredible keeper
    he had an incredible season
are we thinking of making him fight for the no.1 spot next season against Fabianski

Not to sure what the new homegrown rule has got to do with Barazites ommission from this squad as he was brought in when he waqs just 16 so he qualifies comfortably.

Its actually amazing to think that one of the geniune starts of Arsenal youth football over the last 5 years has never been (and never will) go to an austrian training camp. Amazing when you consider even the likes of Hoyte, Rodgers, Randell and Simpson have all been to austria at some stage but never Nacer. I think the boy should leave for the good of his career such a shame.

that probably was one of the reason he didnt sign drogba

Good Lord we are short of CB’s and DM’s. We need at least 1 quality player in each department to round out this squad if we are to have *any* chance of challenging Utd and Chelsea. And please don’t humour me with this “Denilson is a DM” talk cos I’m likely to dry-reach.

I read that Nortveit has been given assurances that he’ll see some action this season. I sincerely hope that doesn’t mean we won’t be signing 2 more defensive players. I noticed last time Wenger spoke about the subject he said “one more” which I was hoping was more of a figure of speech rather then something literal.

We are stacked at the full back positions but completely short in the middle.

Not sure whether it has been mentioned but Vela will be using the #11 next season, with RVP taking up the #10 which I’m assuming everyone knows by now.

      dont need DM’s
but yeah a CB should be a good addition someone a bit older. Either in his late 20’s and his 30’s

Nortvedit is actually very impressive as a RB so I am glad to see him in the first team

RE: DM – We needed one last season so what has changed this season?

Nortveidt/Frimpong/Coquelin just aren’t ready to step up and the end of last season should have taught Wenger (and us) how fragile we look when Song isn’t in the team. Same old story, we’ll ask Song to play too many games and he’ll be exhausted and/or injured at the end of the season when we need him the most. Bring some cover in immediately!!

Looks like we’ve sold Eduardo and still haven’t used much of the transfer kitty. What are we waiting for when either Kosi or Djourou are penned into start for as at the beginning of the season and there’s still no experienced cover for Song.

I absolutely love Wenger but not bringing in either Inler/Melo over the last 2 seasons has been his biggest mistake. I hope history doesn’t repeat itself. 1 Starting caliber CB and an experienced DM please Mr Wenger!!

Loic Remy has probably gone to Liverpool – where are they finding the money?
I think Barazite, a favourite of mine ever since I first saw him, should go back to the Netherlands and start building his career. He shouldn’t waste any more time here, esp. not on loan in the thuggish Championship, as Wenger clearly doesn’t have faith in him. Why Henderson is preferred, like the not-very-talented or committed Mark Randall, is a mystery to me. Oh well.

So is Chamakh getting the jinxed no. 9? Cast your mind back – if you’re old enough to remember that far – to the last time someone was a success with that number. Eduardo, Reyes, Jeffers… It’s actually decades.

I would have to plead with yall to give some time w.r.t Henderson, Barazite , Nordtveit.

These are genuine potential players, the only problem being they havent found the position to play yet. Henderson was initially tipped to have pace but now hes been put into the middle. Nordtveit was thought to be the kind of player to “lead” a defense, hes played at right back, which IMHO is not a good move considering his pace. I have no clue whats happening with Barazite’s positional recession on the formations, what next defense ??

Henderson will never make it arsenal, barazite is my favourite players in the reserves
but sadly his future with us looks almost over
and dumb A## all good player should know how to play other positions
if a striker plays a winger then he learns what movement a striker needs to make for the winger to reach him and its the same for other positions as well

Andrew, not true at all with your personal attack on Runbi. Perfect case; See Goalkeepers. Not all players can play multiple positions, tho its good for them. its not always about versatility, some players i.e Henry and Drogba shine as the main striker role, and tend to be less effective (see henry at Barcelona for the past couple seasons, played out of position as a left winger.) Even B52 wasnt a great right winger bt a much better central striker. tho i agree its good for players to learn other positions, it doesnt have anything to do with the calibre of the player. Flamini played as a CB or RB for Milan and SUCKED! so im afraid that your logic has failed you Andrew, just go to sleep

News coming out now about Arsenal making a late bid for him. Great call macha! WHam seem favourites tho but I agree with you if it’s the players decision he has already come out and said we are his dream destination.

Haven’t seen him play and not sure we need another striker to be honest. I think 3 CF’s is plenty with JET providing the 4th option if needed (assuming Simpson is sold of course).

Can well believe he PREFERS Arsenal to Liverpool – there’s no secret he’s been angling for the move – so I hope you’re right and the Guardian is wrong.
The Mirror suggests an Arsenal striker is going to Villa. Who? I can’t be bothered to listen to their long video discussion, but I’d guess it might be Simpson? He’d quite suit their English long-ball style so let’s hope they pay us loads for him.

Bottom line we should be buying one tall CB and maybe a keeper and that’s it. I just don’t understand another French player? I know Edurado might be gone? But I swear Arsene stated he Edurado still had a lot to prove @ the club ( everyone should watch last season’s pre-season Edurado was awesome!) J what is your next topic? Arsene and these blogs have me very confused on the season ahead! I’m going to try to focus again on tomorrows live game and go from there( Yes I’m also very upset Nacer Barazite did not make the trip??) Hopefully he kicks ass in tonight’s reserve match?

    WELL THERE YOU GUYS GO
DIAKHATE WILL BE OUR NEXT SIGNING AND ITS A GOOD SIGNING THE MAN CAN ALSO PLAY AS A LB OR KEEPER IF NEEDED

Arsenal target Pape Diakhate could be on the verge of a Dynamo Kiev exit after it emerged the club is willing to listen to offers.

The Ukranian Premier League defender has been on the radar at the Emirates for some time now, with Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger a known admirer of the powerful Senegalese centre back.

Diakhaté joined Nancy in France as a youth player before making his senior debut as a teenager in 2001. Signed by Kiev in the summer of 2007, the defender quickly established himself at the Lobanovsky Dynamo Stadium before breaking a colar bone.

Despite recovering from injury and forcing his way back into the side, Kiev loaned Diakhaté to Ligue 1 side Saint-Etienne in January this year with a view to selling him for £7.25 million in the summer.

However, Les Verts declined to take up the transfer option, leaving the African international returning to the Ukraine and his parent club.

The Daily Mail reports that Dynamo Kiev will now listen to lower offers for the defender, with Lille reportedly interested in a £6 million move.

Bilo-Syni will hope for more if they can get it, with Premier League clubs Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland also thought to be keen. It’s the Gunners who are favourites though, with defender Bacary Sagna urging Frenchman Wenger to move for the player as recently as May.

Despite the addition of Laurent Koscielny at the Emirates, Arsenal still appear light at the centre back position ahead of another Premier League title challenge. Wenger is keen to bring another player in after the departures of Mikael Silvestre and William Gallas on free transfers.

The future of Sol Campbell remains in doubt, and his departure would leave minimal numbers in that position in north London. Diakhaté would be seen as an ideal replacement for the club, and a move for the 26-year-old could be on the cards if the former England international makes the anticipated move to Celtic.

Bendtner to take no. 9? Excellent. Have been terrified that a player I liked might get jinxed by that shirt.

I too would be surprised if we signed Remy at this stage. He’s not that expensive and he’s the sort of player Wenger would normally move early for, if he was interested.

Good luck to Eduardo. I’m sure he’ll do great once he’s with a manager who has confidence in him – which I’m not sure that Wenger really ever had – and far away from the leg-breakers league. He’ll have lots of Brazilian teammates at Shaktar, which should help him feel at home. Am really sad at what happened to him here, but career-ending injuries are inevitable with teams like Birmingham and Stoke in the league, and the situation is unlikely to change any time soon.

MattMQ – it doesn’t mean a thing when Wenger says he likes a player we haven’t yet bought (e.g. Joe Cole) or that he still has faith in one who’s not yet been sold (e.g. Eduardo). It’s just what he says, out of politeness or kindness or to keep the agents and media guessing. He also almost always publicly says players are staying – Hleb, Ade, Flamini – even when he knows they are not.

Well said dudu. I dont understand the love fest of barazite. Yes he has some good skill but very inconsistent. Lets be honest he didnt set the world on fire at derby and arsene has very rarely got these things wrong and sees him on a daily basis. I dont see a place for him in the 4-3-3 formation. Henderson on the other hand is a very tidy player from what ive seen. Lovely left foot, keeps the ball well, and he could grow into a michael carrick type midfield player. I think he fully deserves his chance!
