Afobe In Contention Ahead Of Spurs Tie

Arsène Wenger is contemplating including Reserve team striker Benik Afobe in Arsenal’s Carling Cup squad to face Tottenham tomorrow. The 17-year-old has been training with the first team over the past week.

Wenger is poised to stick with his traditional policy of fielding a young side despite facing North London rivals Spurs, who are set to name a strong lineup. The Frenchman is struggling for forward options with Nicklas Bendtner and Gilles Sunu still recovering from injuries, leaving just Carlos Vela and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas as potential options.

Afobe, who was named in the England Under 19 squad this morning, has been a Reserve team regular this season and could earn a place on the bench.

Elsewhere, Conor Henderson, Craig Eastmond, Havard Nordtveit and Henri Lansbury are all nursing knocks that rate them as 50:50. It means bit-part first teamers Denilson and Emmanuel Eboue may come in, while Johan Djourou is expected to return from Reserves duty to feature.

Interesting to see if Wilshere makes the squad for tomorrow. He’s played a lot of games recently but his passion would be an asset at the lane.

JET deserves a start for me. He is a monster and has started the season in great form. He also has the experience of scoring at the lane before for the U18s and that will mean a lot going in to this.

Afobe should definitely make the bench though. His development is going really well and including him in the squad tomorrow can only do good things for him.

JS – Any thoughts on who Wenger will partner with Djourou and have in goal? I read a piece in the Mirror that said he’ll play Sczceszny but i’d be surprised if it wasn’t Fabianski.

How the hell can they leave aneke out of the u19 squad when he has been excelling in reserve team football even more so then afobe! It seems like noel blake has picked his favourites and players like aneke and morrison have to wait for them to move on to get there chance!

This is totally off topic but is it me are players more worried about there hair these days? Perfect example Glen Johnson of Liverpool instead of playing “D” he is constantly playing with his hair? WTF!!! I would bench him or make get a haircut? Sorry had to let it out!

Anyone know the latest with Gilles Sunu I would really like to see him play he is pure lighting! AFC 4 to 1 over Tott…

    I reckon it will be:

    Fabianski

    Eboue, Nordtveit, Djourou, Gibbs

    Eastmond
    Denilson, Randall

    Rosicky, JET, Vela

Subs: Szczesny, Hoyte, Afobe, Henderson, Aneke/Lansbury, Miquel, Arshavin

I would expect Szczesny to start the game. Fabianski will get his chance in the FA cup.

Be good to see Afobe in the squad although I don’t see him starting as I would expect to see either Eboue or Rosicky in the wide right position, with Vela left and JET leading the line.

It will be interesting to see who gets the position in the hole as i’d expect to see Eastmond and Denilson in the two holding positions.

I’m al for giving the young ladsa a go but I’d hate to see us fill the side with u-18’s and get mauled 3-0 like at man city last year

I’d hope to see players like Eboue, squi;ll, Rosicky, Nasri, Denilson, Djourou, Vela etc

Players who have some kind of experience.

I’d even have a few big guns on the bench – chamakh, arshavin too. We do not want a mauling against our big rivals.
