Arsenal Name 20 Man + Under 21 Squad

Published on September 1st, 2010

Arsenal have named their squad for the first half of the 2010-2011 season. All players had to registered to the Premier League by 5pm GMT this afternoon. Arsene Wenger has named 20 first team players, and 7 home grown players.

The club haven’t reached the maximum of 25 first-team players, so they were only required to include seven home grown players under the new ruling. They are Nicklas Bendtner, Gael Clichy, Denilson, Johan Djourou, Vito Mannone, Alexandre Song and captain Cesc Fabregas.

First-Team Squad:
Manuel Almunia, Andrey Arshavin, Maroune Chamakh, Abou Diaby, Emmanuel Eboue, Lukasz Fabianski,Laurent Koscielny, Samir Nasri, Tomas Rosicky, Bacary Sagna, Thomas Vermaelen, Robin van Persie, Sebastien Squillaci.

Home Grown:
Nicklas Bendtner, Gael Clichy, Denilson, Johan Djourou, Vito Mannone, Alexandre Song, Cesc Fabregas.

On top of that, Arsenal have submitted the registration for their allowance of Under 21 players. These are counted as young players but have been registered so they can play in the Premier League. These players count as over the 25 man ruling.

where is wellington silva and miyaichi

    • Posted by Jag77 on September 1st, 2010, 22:11

There is another registration deadline after January Transfer Window, so we would submit them then, when we actually completely own the player.

  2. Posted by Hiro on September 1st, 2010, 22:10 [Reply]

since silva won’t be able to play for arsenal before january he doesn’t have to be named now… he can be named in january for the “new” squad.

miyaichi on the other hand should have been named…but he hasn’t joined arsenal yet so he is not an arsenal player yet. as long as someone isn’t an arsenal player, he cannot be registered to play for us

Have I missed something over the last few months? Who the fudge is Steven Smith?

disgraceful all our homegrown players are foreign

    • Posted by lordgunner on September 1st, 2010, 23:38

idiot because our english are young enough to be exempt to register as homegrow
Theo, wilshere, gibbs, eastmond and now JET are first team but don’t need to register (theo and gibbs need next year as over 21).Frimpong is too but out for this year thx to injury.

    • Posted by Davi on September 2nd, 2010, 00:02

Yehh. Fuck foreigners. What a disgrace we have people born on a different piece of land in our youth team.. I’m with you man.
(with a name like niyi sokunbi, i have to ask if you are serious?)

    • Posted by black-ice on September 2nd, 2010, 19:22

racist moron..what diffence does it make?
they wear arsenal jerseys when they play and that’s what should matter to you.
how can you complain about that when LORD knows we have about 20 UK nationals on the list of U-21′s?
you can’t blame arsenal for english players being shit and over-priced, can you? cos LORD knows we’ve tried before and just so you don’t forget i hope you recall the names francis jeffers, jermain pennant, jerome thomas and david bentley and tell me which one of them you will rather have in our first team compared to the so called “FOREIGNERS”.
if you want an all english club to support try blackpool or villa, and that’s as close as you will get to that, other than that shut the fuck up and SUPPORT.

    • Posted by Davi on September 3rd, 2010, 21:16

@black-ice – in case that was aimed at me, i was being sarcastic. I cant stand it when people go on about this english players crap. It exposes their predjudice.

Theo Walcott is born on March 16, 1989
so he is 21 why he isn’t in the first team ???
I think u got it wrong.

Carlos Vela is born on March 1, 1989
so he is 21 also why he isn’t in the first team ???

Gibbs will be 21 this month…

    • Posted by hova on September 2nd, 2010, 04:09

bcuz its only a 25 man squad in the first team,an u cud play the players in the youth team in the epl so u put the players over 21 in the official squad so u hav more options…………its a smart move

    • Posted by Sriram on September 2nd, 2010, 08:14

Actually he got it right, the rule states that the player who was 21 on January 1st of the year of registration i.e. 2010, hence Walcott and Vela are under 21.

  8. Posted by Zorr0 on September 1st, 2010, 22:47 [Reply]

Niyi, calm down, only because all the real homegrown players are under 21!

  9. Posted by Omar on September 1st, 2010, 23:02 [Reply]

thanks but why we register that mach of player under 21 and most of them under 16 so i think it impossible that arsene play them

  10. Posted by soulcricket on September 1st, 2010, 23:04 [Reply]

Miyaichi will get a permit in my opinion, politics the reason but fine with me. England needs the Asian market Manure and Celtic have made big strides. Wenger has spent time there knows the training, the regime. This is the discipline he loves. The largest factor must be this is a player with “extraordinary talent”, but due to the need of the Asian market permit will be granted regardless. I would also not be surprised to a new Honda parked at Arsenal come January; my dumbass believes.

  11. Posted by Mandarin Youth on September 1st, 2010, 23:07 [Reply]

Well said Zorr0 Mr Wenger has it well set out, it only means we have 4/5 squads to pick from to hammer that other team in north london SPUDS!

  12. Posted by John on September 1st, 2010, 23:13 [Reply]

What i dont understand is that we have named a 20 man squad we dont we buy another 5 players?

We have got alot of under 21 first team squad players like walcott, vela, gibbs, wilshere, ramsey.

Why not buy some more players.

Chelsea, united have problems they have named a 25 man squad which means they have to sell to buy players.

We are 5 short surely we could fill the numbers

    • Posted by goontown on September 1st, 2010, 23:35

It is unreasonable to expect us to sign players just because we have room for them. Do you want us to go the route of Man U and LIverpool and fall into debt? Teams just aren’t selling right now, and if they are its at an inflated price. I count us lucky to have signed the players we have this transfer season. Buying players simply to buy players will ruin everything we have been doing the last few years.

    • Posted by kisskissbangbang on September 1st, 2010, 23:38

because in a years time a number of those under 21 players who are already considered first team players (or are on the brink) will be ineligible for the u21 ruling so will have to ‘graduate’ (so to speak) into the first team squad.

if you sign up players just to fill the space now, you’ll only have to get rid of them (or others) in a years time to make space for the ‘graduating’ under 21′s.

The 7 homegrown player rule is interesting. Do you think it could have been a potential stumbling block for the signing of a new keeper? If a new keeper was signed then that would have pushed the squad over the 20 player quota and they would effectively have to have signed another ‘homegrown’ player to satisfy the quota to take it from the 7 up to 8.

    • Posted by lordgunner on September 1st, 2010, 23:46

because our back up are young enough and don’t need register,The chav ,city MU,totts have a lot of their back up who are over 21 and that cause all their problem .And some of our player will need to get register in the list next season (giibbs, theo, vela),so it s much better to have place left to have freedom to buy if we need that drop someone out the squad .
And buying just to get 25 player register is plain stupid.i would have love a GK but we are much stronger this year

    • Posted by Am on September 2nd, 2010, 00:37

Chelsea named one less player in their 25 man squad,

We had 20, while they have 19!

    • Posted by T2T on September 2nd, 2010, 14:02

      Based on a quick research:
If you look at the list submitted by Arsenal, before next season (2011/12), Arsenal cannot keep all the players currently on the “25-list” + the 6 that are moving up (Bothelo, Gibbs, Randall, Traore, Vela, Walcott). Of those 6, all are considered homegrown and 3 are eligible for England. Therefore, before next season, Arsenal will have to sell 1 more than they buy or have some players outside of the 25 list. Homegrown players will NEVER be a problem in the foreseeable future.
The season 2012/13, another 9 are older than 21 (9 homegrown and 5 English).

Arsenal has so far had a policy of fielding very young players in CC. If those players need to be registered with PL, I’m not sure. Same goes for FA Cup. Therefore, Arsenal may choose to have a few players outside PL list and only for CL/FA Cup/CC although that is unlikely.

sack wenger now! im not sure we haven’t got enough u-21′s. i think eventually this will cripple us especially with a lack of a goalkeeper!

    • Posted by Badaman on September 1st, 2010, 23:35

      shut up you bellend.

    • Posted by TrexlerGunner on September 1st, 2010, 23:35

You make no sense. As for the guy saying why not buy 5 players, because a lot of those under-21 players will play a large role in the team. There’s no need to buy players just to buy players, in fact it’s a great way to get yourself into debt. I have some space in my cupboard but I’m not going to go buy stuff just to fill it up.

It’s interesting he listed just about anyone that is affiliated with Arsenal just in case he wants to use them in Carling Cup match. I’m very curious to see who we field in the first CC game against Sp*ds. In Arsene We Trust…always.

    • Posted by Menace on September 1st, 2010, 23:51

What a fantastic situation. Some damn foreigner complaining about homegrown players being foreign. We all eat Italian tomatoes and New Zealand lamb!!! Do we complain that the product is Danish when we buy bacon? I think Wenger is an incredible man in that he has made everyone who shows Arsenal flair, homegrown. Our team is incredible and will not only win trophies but will do so with the highest numbers of viewers and the most number of records ever set by sport in Britain.

We dont need some dumbass telling us to get rid of Wenger when it is obvious that Wenger has pre-empted the FA and set up a dream team of talent. OK so we might need a goalkeeper to compete with Almunia. That will happen. But in the mean time enjoy winning football played by homegrown talent in Arsenal colours.

guys guys …. you are missing the biggest point here…………………….if I am right, which I know I am then teams who cannot make 25 player registered squad are allowed to add free agents even after the transfer window close to make up the squad….So any good GK still remaining as FA…..you never know wenger whom he may pick from where…………

    • Posted by James on September 2nd, 2010, 14:26

i heard that the brazilian keeper Dida was a free agent. Worth a go?

First may I congratulate you on a consistently brilliant site.
Secondly……. what a frightening (in a good way) set of under 21….s
Thirdly I imagine the gaps in the 25 are to accommodate the older young guns who will turn 21 shortly

    keep up the excellent work

    Where’s Ramsey?

  21. Posted by bijok_parok on September 2nd, 2010, 04:06 [Reply]

I thought Diaby is considered as home-grown player?
On the under-21..all players which is under 21 can play in the premier league if i’m not mistaken. So basically players who are under 21 and not loaned out can play i guess.is it?

  22. Posted by Andrew on September 2nd, 2010, 05:29 [Reply]

    This is brilliant
JET, Nortvedit, WIlshere, Ramsey, GIbbs, Eastmond, Lansbury and Wellington will all part of the first team this year and they are sure to get game in fa and carling cup
This is what our team will look like

Does anyone know if Vela will be classed as homegrown when he reaches 22.

    • Posted by Matt D on September 2nd, 2010, 10:37

Don’t think he does gazzap. Anyone correct me if I’m wrong but I think they have to have trained with an English club for 3 years before their 21st birthday. Saying that with Gibbs and Walcott needing to be part of our 25 man squad next season we should have no problems reaching our homegrown quota.

    • Posted by Matt D on September 2nd, 2010, 10:38

Just to clarify that is because Vela was with Spanish sides for most of that time even though he was contracted to Arsenal.

  24. Posted by gazzap on September 2nd, 2010, 09:18 [Reply]

Another question: does anyone know how many players we have that have come all the way through the Arsenal system to the first team (or fringes) – so dont include players we pikced up at 14 from Wimbledon or Bolton for example.
I think wilshere is one but are there any others?

    • Posted by arjun on September 6th, 2010, 16:54

      lansbury.

  25. Posted by TheCritic on September 2nd, 2010, 10:50 [Reply]

Why don’t we have any actual English players in the twenty man squad? Or even in the homegrown section? Homegrown should be English not Danish, French, Brazilian, Swiss, Italian, Cameroonian and Spanish!

    • Posted by The Gun on September 2nd, 2010, 11:53

      are you a racist????

    • Posted by Badaman on September 2nd, 2010, 12:21

Too many thick people here, seriously.
Wilshere, gibbs, walcott are all UNDER 21, THEY DON’T NEED TO BE REGISTERED AS HG.

Jeeeeez, use your brain (or what little of it you have).

    • Posted by Andrew on September 2nd, 2010, 12:37

Is it just me or is this rule made for wenger
no team in the world has as many talented players as us and this rule restricts teams like Chelsea and United for buying while we can add our yougsters to our already impressive squad
      Szczesny for Goalkeeper
      Nortvedit, Gibbs for defense
Eastmond, Lansbury, Ramsey, WIlshere for midfield
      JET, Walcott, Wellington for attack

this almost an entire team of the most talented youngsters in the world WOW

    • Posted by yaniv on September 2nd, 2010, 18:58

lol.. you’ve missed out our best home grown player andrew.. cesc also qualifies as home grown..

  26. Posted by Hiro on September 2nd, 2010, 13:29 [Reply]

i dont think we have the best youngster squad in the world. most of you are partial because we all love arsenal.
out of all those u21 players…probably only a handful ofthem will every make it to consistent place in the first team. most will be like nacer barazite

    • Posted by Jom on September 2nd, 2010, 15:08

totally disagree! They happens to be special talents and happens to play for Arsenal. have you forgot who the manager is? one of the worlds best youth developer and he will make them stars for us. Wenger will stay for another 4 years which basically means for me that atleast 40-50 % will make it.

    • Posted by Andrew on September 2nd, 2010, 15:51

every club has a golden generation and ours was the double winning team
      Wilshere will make it
      Szczesny will make it
one or two from Frimpong/ Eastmond/Coquelin will make it
      JET looks very likely
      Lansbury looks very likely
      and Bartley looks very likely
there’s also Watt and Sunu who can make it
we also added Ramsey to our team that year so for me 08-09 season youth players can match any clubs golden generation

  27. Posted by michael on September 2nd, 2010, 18:54 [Reply]

If the “Golden Generation, I can’t see Lansbury “making it” as Ramsey stands in his way. Not sure about Sunu, don’t see Watt making it (sorry), but I can easily see the rest making it.

It really doesn’t matter how many HGs we’ve got or who, it’s a mute point to me. The rule is inapt, as are the people who instigated it, and so it can not last.

The Gun – I am not a racist – do you even know what that means? I just think homegrown should mean having English or British citizenship thats all.
