Afobe Joins Huddersfield Town On Loan

Benik Afobe has agreed to join League One side Huddersfield Town on loan until January, Young Guns has learnt.

The 17-year-old, who scored 11 goals in 13 appearances last season as the Under 18’s retained the Premier Academy League, will link up with Huddersfield later this week. Arsène Wenger and Pat Rice have both held discussions with Afobe and decided he was ready for league football.

The powerful front-man is currently enjoying his first season as a regular in the Reserve team, where he has been operating in an unfamiliar right wing role. However, its a position he’s had success in, playing their for England Under 17’s as they won the European Championships last summer.

Afobe, who has two years left to run on his current contract, could feature in Town’s weekend clash against Sheffield Wednesday.

Chuks should also be loaned. They are both huge talents and should be loaned earlier.

I hope he plays and doesnt just sit on the bench like most of our other youth team players currently. If this is the case he’d be better off staying in the reserves amnd training amongst players and coaching staff more geared up to play our style of football.

Huddersfield fan here – he sounds exactly what we’re need and I’m pretty excited to see this lad in action.

He’ll certainly get games as we have a striker crisis right now (which is why he has been brought in).

Hopefully he’ll help us catch Brighton and get up to the Championship where our talented squad deserves to be.

I was looking at the strikers you guys have and none of them are real goal scorers
Afobe can really help you in that department
If Afobe is successful in this loan spell then maybe a contract extension till the end of year would be a great loan deal

After that a loan deal in a championship club and who knows this kid might be ready for Arsenal first team by the time he reaches 19

Great move for Benik, hope he does well. Despite what some may think, this is a huge jump for the young man and i honestlly dont believe the championship wouldve provided any better a platform for him to show what hes got.

Happy with this, League 1 is probably the right level for Benik now. Hopefully he will get a lot of playing time, and will help Huddersfield to promotion, like Lansbury did with Scunthorpe at the same age two years ago.

Also I’m happy if it’s true that Huddersfield play a lot on the ground, seems like a perfect temporary club for Benik if that’s correct.

When we play on the ground at our best then we are very good – unfortunately we have been prone to hoofing it up in the air too much from time to time. Hopefully we will play to his strengths and also now start playing to the strengths of Jordan Rhodes. If we had Gary Roberts back on the wing from injury that would be even more likely

It is good to get him a little time out on his own as a professional fighting for a first team place. A lot of footballers say that the first loan is essential where they grow up from a youth footballer to a professional footballer mentality.

Why didn’t Arsene Wenger tie him up for an extension of his contract before Afobe leaves on loan? Arsene Wenger should have done it since Afobe is such a talented youngster with so much potential!

I don’t see the problem with sending our youngsters on loan to League One or League Two rather than the Championship.

The most important aspect of a loan is that these guys play regularly, and in truly competitive games. Some Reserve games are nothing more than a glorified training session, and there’s so few of them. There’s also the mental aspect of a loan. Our youngsters are used to friendly and familiar surroundings at Arsenal, these loan experiences help develop their mental strength, they become accustomed to the pressures and difficulties of ‘proper’ football.

I think all these things are far more important than the level of football they’ll be playing. And there isn’t a gulf in class between the divisions in the lower leagues anyway. A strong, confident League Two team can easily match a weak Championship side. You see it every season in the cups.
