Arsenal 4-1 Everton; JET Makes The Difference

Arsenal returned to winning ways in the Premier Reserve League this afternoon, thrashing Everton 4-1 at London Colney. Despite falling behind to Mustafi’s header, a brace from Jay Emmanuel-Thomas combined with headers from Chuks Aneke and Havard Nordtveit wrapped up a comprehensive win.

Neil Banfield welcomed back Craig Eastmond, Henri Lansbury and top scorer Jay Emmanuel-Thomas from Champions League duty, but Thomas Cruise was missing after sealing a loan move to Carlisle United. Daniel Boateng replaced him at left back. Jeffrey Monakana and Philip Roberts were named on the bench for the first time.

Shea
Nordtveit – Hajrovic – Miquel – Boateng
Eastmond – Lansbury – Ozyakup
Aneke – Emmanuel-Thomas – Sunu

Subs: McDermott (GK), Yennaris, Deacon, Monakana, Roberts.

Arsenal began brightly at a blustery and wet London Colney but it was Everton who had the first notable chance of the early exchanges. They took full advantage. From what looked like a relatively harmless free-kick 30 yards out, Jose Baxter curled the ball in and Shkodran Mustafi exposed some defensive frailties to bullet home a header. 1-0 with barely 5 minutes on the clock.

The Gunners appeared shell shocked after their positive start and struggled to carve out any real openings. However, Chuks Aneke shot with 20 minutes gone seemed to stir the confidence and the hosts began to take the game to their visitors. It paid dividends. After first smacking the post, Emmanuel-Thomas levelled the scores, flicking home Henri Lansbury’s right wing cross to finish a lovely team move. 1-1.

Arsenal stepped on the gas in the closing stages of the half and worked great opportunities through Aneke, Sunu and Lansbury, but a combination of last ditch defending and saves from Ian Turner kept them out. Everton were rocking, though.

The second half got under way but it was hard to notice there was a break. Arsenal on top, Everton under pressure. It took 90 seconds for it to toll, Aneke crashing home Ozyakup’s corner for 2-1.

Arsenal had the taste for it. The celebrations over the second goal were hardly finished by the time Emmanuel-Thomas had collected Ozyakup’s ball on the right and danced inside. Some breath taking skill and a powerful finish later, it was 3-1.

Everton lacked ideas but did respond by smacking Shea’s post through Baxter, but that was after The Gunners sealed the three points, again from a corner. Another quality Ozyakup delivery, another powerful head, this time from Nordtveit. 4-1.

There was just time for Philip Roberts to make his Reserve team debut, replacing Emmanuel-Thomas, and for Everton to believe they’d pulled one back, only for James Shea to claw off the line. However, it was another impressive win but one that continues to offer up the same question; how long before Emmanuel-Thomas earns a first-team start?

JET wont get chances for England U21 until he plays for Arsenal. He needs to be playing in the first team from this point. I’m not talkning about the bench – he is better than Theo, Vela, and Bendtner.

Have you seen some of the jokers playing for the u21s?

There are a handful of prospects like Henderson, but for the most part it’s just a bunch of Premier League youngsters out on loan, with no hope of making the first team of their own club any time soon. JET’s done all that already – he should have been in the squad ages ago.

Besides, Lansbury, Gibbs and Wilshere were all getting called up to the the u21s before they got any real game time for Arsenal.

I don’t believe he’s ready to start for Arsenal yet either, definitely not ahead of Walcott, whose record speaks for itself. But I would like to see what he can do from the bench a bit more often.

I am waiting for “the player” who is ready to light up the Emirates. I wonder if the JET is he who dares. The players in the Arsenal squad are all good players, nice lads, exciting on the best of times – but not players with a presence.

Currently the JET is showing exactly that in the Reserves, I wonder would he go on the drive fear in the Premier League????????

The player most likely to do that is wilshere in a couple of years, maybe even sooner. JET still has alot to prove to show he can be an arsenal player, wait until arsene starts playing him, until then i dont care how many goals he scores for the reserves he shouldnt be hyped up too much. He looks like he could be a big player though

Arsenal are missing a trick not blooding this throroughbred asap. He reminds me of Henry a la Monaco. Wenger should turn him into a Centre forward that plies the centre half/right back channel or use as a thinking man’s winger. He lulls and tricks defenders(like Garrincha) into getting close before pulling away. If management do not make a decision within the next ten months, he will move to another premiership team (and light them up like Andy Cole did for NUFC and MUFC)

Well.. at 6’3″ and built like a tree.. the few minutes he got in the 2 games he got to play for the first team, defenders literally BOUNCED off of him.. that was amazing to see for an 18 yr old to be bossing around seasoned players in just a couple minutes. He could also have had his first goal if Walcott had passed him the ball when he was through on goal and clear in space after a great back-heel and run he did. Everyone is excited to see him playing for the first team, and with the statistics he has right now, who is to deny him that? I think he might be bigger is build than majority of our first teamers as well, but what I love is his drive to prove to everyone that he is the best thing around. That’s the mark of a true champion. He doesn’t just talk about it, but works on the field to make sure ppl remember his name…

JET hasn’t earned a start for the first-team, Reserve football is several levels below the Premier League and Champions League. He’s earned himself a spot on the bench and 15-20 minutes on the pitch in the right situation. Maybe a start in the CC or FA Cup if we have injuries.

If he does well in those sub appearances and proves himself capable at the highest level, then he will have earned himself a start.

Ozyakup seems to be doing well, is that 3 assists he got today?

Neither Sturridge nor Wellbeck make much of a difference for their clubs yet. They play for the England u-21, right? The reasons for this are complicated, but the question is this: If they can’t make a difference then why do we think JET can? Is JET as good as Macheda, who has made a difference at the top level but hardly gets games for Manure?

I don’t know if JET has been around the first team long enough to fit in as seamlessly as need be for premier league matches. Our build up play is quite intricate and relies heavily on understandings between players. Chamakh and Vela still look a bit slow in understanding too much of the time.

Anyway, a loan move would be great.

    The Critic,

Yea, but if you add assists it looks like this:

JET – 10 goals and 4 assists in 6 matches
    Aneke – 6 goals, 4 assists in 7 matches

These numbers are absolutely through the roof for both players. As impressed as I am with JET’s production, I’m equally impressed with Aneke because he is putting up these ridiculous numbers and yet he just turned 17 about 4.5 months ago.

I’m not sure what JET can do at premier league level, but I think it’s time for a loan spell at a premier league club where he’s got a fair shot at becoming a regular starter. Don’t see him getting anything more than the odd 5-10 minute run-out at the end of matches with us. He’s done well enough in the Championship last season to need a step-up in class if he’s loaned out.

Aneke has been my favorite youth player since Wilshere moved up to the 1st team. The kid has a phenomenal game. He still has a lot to work on but he’s so good already in spite of that, it’s hard not to see a massive future for this kid.

I hope neither of them ever gets picked by the dinasaur Pierce for England U-21’s. Nothing could be better for their development than avoiding that tactical cesspool!

I like that JET is not going straight in to the first team. I think that is one of our problems. Our young players now feel entitled to first team action rather than earning it. Tired of seeing talented players not giving it their all every game out there. These kids need to earn their spot.

He’d never have gotten a sniff at our club because he lacks technique. He’s similar to Duncan Fergurson…don’t think for a Champions League side though.

GOAL – In the 28th minute Town extended their lead, with Benik Afobe scoring his first goal for the Terriers since his loan move from Arsenal. Carey did well defensively this time, getting back to block an overlap before finding Rhodes with a good ball down the channel; the striker exchanged a neat one-two with his fellow striker before advancing and crossing to the back post for the 17 year-old, who pulled behind his marker to nod a calm header past the goalkeeper from eight yards out.

GOAL – Town extended their lead further in the 73rd minute, with Benik Afobe netting a well-taken second of the game. The ball was played into the chest of substitute Garner, who cleverly took it in before rolling marker Cresswell and threading a pass behind defender Ashworth; Afobe raced onto the ball, easily outpacing the last defender, before skipping past the ‘keeper and coolly rolling the ball into the empty net.
