Szczesny Refuses To Discuss Arsenal Extension

Wojciech Szczęsny is refusing to hold further negotiations with Arsenal over extending his contract. The 20-year-old admits he has received an offer from the club, but he waiting for assurances over his future.

Arsène Wenger confirmed on Friday Young Guns’ story from the Polish press that talks had begun over a new deal and that an offer had been made. However, with the finer details still to thrash out, Szczęsny has broken off talks with the club and suggested he will only sign if he is given a prominent role in the team between now and the end of the season.

In a candid interview with Polish website Przegląd Sportowy, Wojciech was asked how the talks were progressing with Arsenal.

“There was some offers, but I am not interested right now. It’s not that I don’t want to extend the contract, I just don’t want to hold talks at this point. I have enough money to live and I can’t complain about that, but I will only be happy if I play.”

“Everything depends on how many games I play. I admit that I want to play at Arsenal as long as they want me. If I can earn my place in goal I won’t even consider any other offers.”

The break down in talks will come as a surprise to Wenger, who appeared confident that he would tie Szczęsny down to a long term deal last week.

Wojciech has spoken about his desire to play in the Champions League if Arsenal secure early progression into the knock out stages. Whether the Pole gets the nod in games like that will be make or break in the fight to keep arguably the best young goalkeeper in the country.

I think what he needs to see is that almunia is no longer in the picture. if he can see that at worst he is number 2, then I think he will sign.

Give him more games in the tin pot and the CL when we are qualified. If he odes well sell Manuel and promote him to either n1 or n2 behind Flappy.

@ Dan, i dont think he is a trouble maker, just impatient. He proved something last year on loan and he might have even impressed himself and built up a bit too much confidence. But at the end of the day he wants to play football. he’s not asking for more money, just game time and assurance that he will be in Wengers plans in the near future.

He should have gone on loan in the championship at least or top flight in another country.

Dont be silly. So you’d sell him now just because he’s more interested in playing time than money – as opposed to adebayor? This is Arsenal, that’s certainly right!, where you play if you are good enough, not about age, not the passport, right? Better to keep him unless you really love almunia.

Sorry Dan, I’m afraid I’ll have to disagree with you on this one as well. I don’t really see him as being a trouble maker. It just seems he is up front and honest, perhaps even too much. Bottom line is he loves Arsenal and wants to play here more than anything. But behind that is the fact that he loves football and wants to play, period. Whether he is good enough to play at Arsenal right this moment is perhaps unkonwn, however, it does seem apparent he is definitely good enough to play at the top level somewhere. And for any position game time is important to progress, but for a keeper, perhaps its even more vital considering only 1 can play at a time. He is just being honest in saying, he hopes he can play at Arsenal, but if he does not feel assured he will breakthrough, he will go to a place where he can play and make less money rather than a place where he can sit and make more. This is his career. He cannot force Arsenal to sign him and Arsenal cannot force him to sign. If he fulfills his contract and moves on, that is his decision.

      @US of Arsenal
I want to see Szczesny sign on as well, but you can’t say that he “loves Arsenal” – if he did, he’d stay at Arsenal no matter what and would be happy with proving himself to Wenger, and earning his place. He’s basically said he’ll leave unless he’s given playing time; obviously that shows he doesn’t “love” the club as much as you think he does.

The thing is, he hasn’t proved himself at the very best stage, in big matches and against quality opposition. League One sides and a below-strength Newcastle (with Neil Ranger – really?) are hardly good enough to be considered quality opposition. So he is quite full of himself if he somehow thinks he’ll be no. 1 at one of the Big Four and which still are one of the most famous clubs in Europe.

Personally, I would much rather see goalkeepers who’ve actually proven themselves against quality opposition. Rene Adler, anyone?

At this point in time we cant afford to give a unexpierenced goalkeeper much game time. He should realise this. Fabianski has built up a fair amout over time and he is now playing well.
I fear wenger is going to lose out as he should have loaned him out and the start of the season. That would have kept him happy as he would be playing and he prob wouldhave signed a new contract.
You can’t fault his desire but at this point his ego is getting in the way.

No problem with him wanting to play but blackmailing the club into getting games is wrong. Threatening to leave for £0 if we don’t play him when the guy is 20 is wrong.
I don’t care how you look at it, he’s not bigger than the club, he’s a 20 year old hyped goalkeeper with a lot of potential. Nothing more at this point.

20 year olds don’t blackmail this football club. What’s to stop any young player doing that from now on. What if Afobe sees that and decides I’ve had enough of reserves football, play me or I’m never signing another contract.

Troublemaker’s can leave on the same boat that Adebayor did.

Most top keepers were playing regularly at his age, that’s how they became so good. You don’t improve your decision-making by benchwarming. Szczesny’s growth will be stunted if he doesn’t start playing week in week out.

I think he does genuinely want to stay but Wenger needs to take into account his concerns. Arsenal should promise to arrange a loan move for him to a top European league if he signs the extension.

Szczęsny MUST stay! At any cost. He is THAT great. Almunia’s time is over. Make Szczęsny our nr2 and let him fight for the 1st spot.

Everyone is talking about Akinfeev, Neuer, Adler or LLoris, but we do have 2 young gk’s who will be great!

Just give Wojtek a chance and it will not be needed to spend 20m on Reina.

Wojtek can be our new Seaman.

New Seaman? Great? How many times have you seen this kid play? Has he played against quality opposition; the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester United, Chelsea or even Liverpool or Sevilla? I realize you might be biased in his favour because he’s your countryman, but he has nowhere near proven himself at the top stage. He should be lucky he’s even considered for the no. 3 position at the club, let alone no. 1 (how positively hilarious).

And where is Flamini today? The problem with there players is that they forget they were nobodies before they came to Arsenal, and after one season of average performance they believe they’ve arrived. For WS to make a headway in his career, he needs to keep his head down and learn his trade, he can still play till he’s 40. Not every goalkeeper is gonna play at 20, in fact only few do, obviously he’s not one of them so he needs to bide his time.

Exactly. Do you know what Flamini is doing right now? He’s out getting doner kebab for Berlusconi and warming (and possibly cleaning) San Siro’s benches for Ronaldinho and Robinho. We don’t need his sort anywhere near our club.

Dan I thought I was the only one that had a horroble feeling he will sign for Utd or Chelsea lets hope not.

I think Wenger needs to sit down with him face to face as he is very special talent and as a result has a huge ego bordering on aggorance.

That said he should be told its between him and Fab. As Fab is on a good run at the minute he stays in goal but if he loses form or gets injury then Sczcensy gets a jersey and keeps it until he doesnt perform.

I think thats the best offer than can be made to him as it would be disrespectful to expect Wenger to bench Fab when he is playing so well.

I really hope he signs on and knew even with the news he was offer a new contract this one wont be straight forward, lets hope Wenger can win him over.

The boy has confidence and isn’t happy to just sit and wait. Fair play to him. We’d be stupid not to play him more. Almunia’s finished at Arsenal – nice guy but not good enough. Fabianski is having a decent run at the moment but there’s nothing wrong with letting Wojciech take over for a few games (cups and a few league games). Last year and before the worst ever professional goalkeeper ever to be on Arsenal’s books, Mannone was for reasons unknown considered 3rd choice ahead of Chesney, disgraceful!

This season after having proven himself in English football (something Almunia and Fabinaski haven’t done) at Brentford and having a great pre season he still finds himself at only 3rd choice despite the other two continuing to put in clown like performances.

He is a decent keeper and hopefully will be great, for us, but he is not ready and I dont think he is even suggesting he should be number 1, just to play a few more games than he had been.

The simple solution is beat Shaktar, then tell Wojciech he plays the remaining two CL games and the Carling Cup. Flappy gets the Prem games. Almunia gets sold and we either bring in a third string keeper, who is made aware he is third choice, or get Mannone back.

I say give hime a chance in the Carling Cup and in some Champions League games (once qualified) to let him know the club are appreciative of his potential.

On the other hand we simply cannot afford to let such a talent go!! Imagine Manchester United pick him for up for free as a replacement for VDS. That would be a disaster.

Sad to say that after all AFC do for mostly foreign players they show no loyalty at all. He should be absolutely chuffed that he is now second choice to fabiansky but his agent probably can earn more by unsettling him.

Arsenal right now have the worst first choice and second choice keepers in all of the top flights put together yet if Chesney was to leave us in the summer he will easily find a top 30 club where he will be No.1, possibly utd, which would be a disaater. Give the youths a chance! if like Almunia we have seen the best that we are gioing to see from these players especially due to their age, then it is better to bring in new tallent that has shown that they can command a place.
The likes of Diaby, Rosie,Dennilson and even Arshavin should be looking shoulders with fear in their eyes.
After watching Chesney bossing around the defence and his confident heroic display against Newcastle I am convinced that he is the one and only!Lets not lose him it’s time for Wenger to get cold blooded in order to get consitant above average performances from our stars.

When Almunia and Fabianski made continual blunders in goal, they should have been dropped and Szczeny should have gotten his chance. The fact that Wenger has failed to drop Almunia and Fabianski when they have made crucial errors in goal, is why Szcezney is making such demands. That said, I agree with Maciek’s comments, no player should hold our great club ‘hostage’. Hopefully Arsenal will play the goal keepers he has according to merit and Szcezney will then sign a new contract seeing that he has a good chance to become 1st choice GK.

If he wants to go then let him. He is a good prospect – but that’s all, he’s no less error prone than any other keeper at the club, or anywhere else for that matter. I think a decent performance at Newcastle has clouded many peoples judgement despite 2 howlers in that game that Kozzer and Eboue had to rescue him from. The lad is a talent, but like JET et al, he is not ready for first team action yet. Fab1 has finally established a decent run and experienced (and got over) errors made in high profile fixtures and the associated stick from the press and fans, yet a lot of you want him dropped for a 20 year old with a few decent games for Brentford under his belt? Crazy.

Lest you all forget, Paul Robinson looked like a god for half a season at L**ds. Let Fab have his run and if this kid wants to bitch and moan and stamp his feet, then let him. If he wants to leave then fuck him. If he wants to join utd or chelski then fuck him twice with cherries on top and an aids riddled cock because we don’t need some kid unsettling what is now a camp with spirit and a desire to play for each other and for us, the fans.

Those like you have come to our club before…super talented, whining, bitching, sissies who choose to attempt to blackmail one of the best manager in football rather than man-up and fight for a place like all super talented young pros do.

Just like Lassana Diarra, Owusu Obeyei, and Bentley, you will discover that your talent is not superior to our clubs structure.

Either wake up and smell the coffee or “Fuck Off!!!”

We have survived just fine without the others and you can rest assured we will survive without another ego-maniac pansy like you!

why sell almunia at this point?

ches just wants to play, so let almunia ride the pine, and loan ches out again. even though it’s less than ideal, i’m sure he’d be a shoe-in for a championship side, and he’d be able to play until he’d be sick. being number 2 won’t further his developement; playing will. that’s what he wants so give it to him.

Actually changed my mind. He is potentially our GK for the next 15 years!! And I’m sure the likes of MUFC, CFC, AC Milan will be more than happy to grab him for free.

Should do absolutely everything we can to keep him. If that means instilling him as club no. 2 and giving him all the cup games then so be it. Kick Almunia out once and for all…we cannot risk the loss of one of the best young GKS in Europe for Almunias ego FFS!!!

Bye bye Mr chesney, you’re not wayne rooney and we won’t be held ransom to your demands. You’re 20, you’re a goalkeeper name one top level team who would take you at that age and make you their number 1.

You’re a great keeper and will maybe one day be one of the best, but patience is part of being a professional you chose the wrong position if you wanted to play early in a top level team.

Fabianski is 24 and is only now becoming a regular starter, he had huge mistakes, he had to wait behind arguably a lesser keeper to get his chance, he waited and now he’s being rewarded for his patience. He’s becoming respected and if he keeps up this form he will be loved and will go on to do great things.

It’s a pity you didn’t learn the lessons he’s had to. Perhaps technically you’re a better keeper, you may even be the best in the world on the pitch, I don’t know. But you’re lacking in commitment, patience and a professional attitude. Arsenal are one of the best teams in the world, all the other teams above us in the rankings and pay packets wouldn’t even have you as their number 2. And no one wants someone of the immaturity you have just shown. You’re not wayne rooney and we’re not man utd, have fun playing playing for teams that never challenge for any major honours, working, fighting and hoping some day teams will forget you’re an arsenal reject and actually give you a good job.

I think the youngman has bad advisors. He has not proven himself yet. A loan spell in the lower divisions was good for development but does not make him an automatic selection in the premier league.
Secondly, I am concerned that he is venting his frustrations in the media far too often. Negotiations are better managed behind closed doors and not with these online media outlets.
Third, he must realize that if he is to get to the top he must compete with the very best and beat them.
It seems to me that breaking off talks is like a veiled way of giving an altimatum to the club. It does not paint him in good light.
On the other hand he has to start thinking of his future because if Fabianski keeps improving and performing then he might be the first choice for the next ten years, given his young age.

Oh and id rater have Almunia as a keeper in a CL final than a kid like Chesney. I mean AL maybe shit but chesley is a unproven kid which i in no way are willing to gamble our cups on. ATM Als experience makes him a much better option than Chesney. In two years it will be the opisit for sure. But AW would go out and buy a new keeper anyway this year if Al or Fab was not good enough. there were never a question of putting CHesney as no 1 in one of the worlds best clubs at the age of 19. 23 maybe but not 19. He just aint that good.

And so you remember what happened last time Almunia played in a CL final? Thats right he conceeded TWO goals at his near post.

And to the guy who said hes like Merida there is a big difference. Arsenal didnt need him as we were covered with young talent.

Our goalkeeping situation is a lot different. We have a rubbish 33 yr old who has always been crap. Fabianski who has played well recently but what happens if he loses confidence again. And Mannone had 1 good game in an Arsenal shirt. Everyone can see Szczesny is the best we got and if we lose him it will be a big waste of development on him.

A very sensationalist article and headline. He has delayed further talks in order to focus on his football and in his own words “earn a place in the team”.

He wants assurances that he will play, and I’m sure that he will get them. He will continue to play in the Carling Cup, in the FA Cup, and he will most likely get two or three CL group games now that he have almost qualified.

He hasn’t behaved himself very well at all, he has a huge ego for such a young player and needs to learn some patience and humility. But I am confident he will sign soon enough. I believe what he really wants to know is, where in the pecking order will Almunia go when he returns to fitness?

many comments are hilarious. how much do people who claim that he is top class and better than Almunia/Fabianski really know about him? how often did they see him play? he made a very bad mistake in his first Carling Cup game which would have cost us a goal against a stronger side. It was an error due to his inexperience.

from what we have HEARD he is a great prospect. how many people would call for Wenger’s head if we loose this season because he put a 20 year old unexperienced keeper in the goal?

The same people who are on here criticizing Almunia are going to jump on Szczesny like kiev on a silver platter as soon as he makes a couple of howlers against Chelsea or Man Utd. Then they’ll jump on the bandwagon on the first youth prospect they see at the club who give in a couple of good performances against Watford or Milton Keyes.

We all knew Wenger’s stubbornness will sooner or later draw more victims. I’m fully backing Szczesny on this one. We all witnessed dozens of blunders by Almunia and Fabianski. Mannone did very well when he got a chance so perhaps he should be in front of Szczesny, but the two aforementioned blunderinhos surely shouldn’t.

i hope he goes on to become arsenal’s greatest ever goalkeeper but his reputation has grown by not playing and then by youtube highlights of his loan at brentford.
as a youth team goalkeeper he was average and for those of us that made the trip to hull city in the youth cup a couple of years ago and witnessed him completely lose his bottle (we scraped a win despite his antics that night), doubts about his ability will persist until he has played well at the highest level for a sustained period.

Its incredible the way he is being lauded before he has even played a league game! Hopefully, the quotes attributed to him simply mean he wants to stay and wants to play; in the carling Cup team (which looks pretty mailed on) and if and when our journey in that competition is over, he can go out on loan, AFTER he has signed that new deal.

But seriously, some of the comments on here now and previously have been pretty embarassing to say the least.

Will people please STOP the nonsense saying Wenger should have sent him on loan!!

It should be patently clear by now that the ONLY reason Szczesny was not sent on loan is that he has not re-signed a contract and has not seemed interested in doing so. In such a situaton, sending him on loan to play game after game is like putting him in the Shop window and saying “here Chelsea, man U, come and take this guy for free”!

And he is proving that here. One game in the league cup and he is acting like he is a world cup winner with nothing to prove.

If you ask me, he is scared of competing with Fabianski and he wants to run away. Fine, if he doesnt think he is good enough, okay, but at least be decent and make a deal with the club to get something back for you instead of pulling a Flamini.

Guy sounds like a dirtbag to me. I’d say wenger should play him one game only / vs Stoke. let them break his leg or hand or whatever, and then watch this little punk change his tune and realise that the safety of a contract is no small thing.

In attempting to blackmail the boss with the contract hold-out, Wojciech Szczesny is behaving like a young child rather than standing up and fighting it out for his role like a professional.

Wojiech’s behavior makes me appreciate Lukasz Fabianski. Despite relentless abuse by his own fans, Fabianski maintained his dignity and a positive attitude and went about the business of improving his game like a man. He is now exhibiting the kind of goal-keeping one would associate with a club of our stature and quality.

I would also like to remind people about James Shea. He has lived in the shadow of the Szczesny-hype machine for a couple of years. I have been watching him on Arsenal TV with the u-18’s and with the reserves this year and his development is coming along very well. I am in no way suggesting he is in Szczesny’s class because that does not appear to be the case. The jury is still very much out on how far he can go but I have great hope that this young man will develop into Arsenal quality keeper. He comports himself like a strong professional and seems to have great respect for the club.

I would also like to refer people to the comments made by young Jack Wilshere upon signing a new contract with the mighty Arsenal. His words reflected love, respect, pride, and appreciation for chance to be an important member of this great club.

Wilshere and Szczesny are both gifted young footballers. Wilshere (still only 18) comports himself like a man, while Szczesny (though 2 years older) carries on like a prize bitch, throwing his little “contract tantrum” and trying to blackmail the boss into playing him.

Many seem to think Szczesny will develop into a world class goalkeeper. Maybe… Maybe not… We still haven’t seen enough of him playing at the highest level regularly to know how great the kid is. Right now he is a 20 year old player with absolutely zero Premier League starts who is trying to bully one of the great managers in the game into putting him on the field. Think about that for a few moments…just let it sink in…it’s crazy! Kind of hard to get your head around it really. The kid is 20 and hasn’t even played a game in the Prem and he’s threatening to leave over playing time…HaHaHaHaHa!!!!!

I think his attitude is wrong and he should really do better.

If he wants to go, he can… he is not the only excellent player in the world be sure of that. There are other young players coming up.

The club cannot give him the type of guarantee he wants for the simple reason that he may not agree with the bosses opinion as he has earlier stated, saying that they lied to him about the amount of playing time he will get! His interpretation of plenty of playing time and theirs relative to his other colleagues is different!

Almunia is senior to him in pecking order as i think are fabianski and Manone… maybe one of them will be sold, eventually Almunia may have max 2 years to go in his contract… manone may likely move on and that will bring him to number 2 in the next 2 years maybe earlier. that is a worst case scenerio he must live with! or else he may have to find his way to any other club giving him betteroptions.

he should think of Diarra though… It never pays to give ultimatums to your manager. Diarra did that at Chelsea, moved on to eventually end up in Madrid. Lo and behold, Mourhino is his manager again! he could have stayed on in arsenal, just be patient and would have been key in the midfield now!

Dont even think about compareing this kid to De GEa. De Gea is class. He is a nice humble lad that waited and took his chance. He is not a egocentric asshole that thinks he deserves to be no1. If Fab fucks up we wont relie on a 19 year old. We wil try to go back for Reina or for another socalled “world class keeper”. We already gambled enough with keepers in this club and AW knows that. HE does not wanna gamble on a overconfident cocky 19 year old for no1. No if FAb does not work out we will go out in the market again and try to find someone with proven credentials. Chesney is a long term solution, just like Smalling is a long term solution for United. Or Kuzak is for united. The short term is either Fab or a world class from outside.

anyway who cares if he leaves we got Mannone and hes just as good and just as talented, he just aint a dick….
And there is a huge comparasion to Merida. Cos chesney faces competition from Fab and it may well take 3 yeqrs before he gets to be no1. then he is Joe Hart age.

oh and btw.. DE Gea is not in a TOP TOP CLUB. his club plays euro leage and is not no 1 in spain. they dont fight for trophies on 4 fronts, theyll be glad if they win anything at all, nobody can expect atletico to ever threaten anyone. He would be WDS understudy in United for 2-3 years before he became no1. and that would make him hmmm.. 23 years????

You cant guarantee anybody playing time, especially not to a pimpled faced 20 yr old who, while a great talent, cannot reliably catch the ball. This is Arsenal, not Stoke city – and hell Begovic cant get lowly Stoke to let him use them as a live training ground. You do that sort of thing on loan at a lesser club.

Joe Hart at 20 did not blackmail anybody. He signed a contract, went out on loan and proved himself. Look at him now.

let Szcsnesy either accept the terms of the learning process required or go. You keep a punk like this and he will be pulling this nonsense every time his contract come up.

I think Almunia is out of the picture now. No way that Wenger will let the Spaniard play the CC, CL and FA cup games from Szczesny now that Fabiansky has effectively taken over as no. 1. Im sure he will get some 10 games or so before the season is over and then it is up to him to prove himself worthy of challenging Flappy. It usually only takes a couple of mistakes from Arsenal no. 1 for the keeper to magically injure himself, giving the no. 2 a chance in the team.

It’s pretty obvoious that Adebayor had been guaranteed both, only to find that wasnt true. Not only is he not starting but it wont be long before the club starts “encouraging” him to leave for any non-English team that will pay a huge transfer fee, even if Adebayor has to drop salary.

Mercenaries want guaranteed starting places and chase every last penny. Real men knuckle down and prove what they are worth. You dont hear the likes of Nasri or Rosicky or Wilshere whining about starting or not. They just put their heads down and work.
