FIFA Back Track On Wellington Visa

Arsenal could be forced to loan Brazilian forward Wellington Silva after FIFA back tracked on their initial decision to award the youngster a work permit. Arsene Wenger travelled to FIFA’s Headquarters this morning to secure a special talent visa, but the application was denied.

Silva revealed on his Twitter profile last night that Wenger was travelling to FIFA today to secure his release from Fluminense. The 17-year-old went on to say he expected there would be ‘no problems’, as all the indications were that he would be given the visa required to join Arsenal from January.

However, in a meeting this afternoon, FIFA officials refused to grant the prospect the necessary paper work. Spanish Segunda outfits Celta Vigo and UD Salamanca have previously expressed an interest in loaning Silva, and if Arsenal fail to have the decision over turned on appeal, a three to five year spell away from the club is certain.

    I don’t get this??

FIFA is regarding international clearance I thought? Work permits are issued by the home office, hence the fact that it varies from country to country?

I also always thought that Brittain and not FIFA would have the say in work permit-matters. Weird :S

Visa regs over here are a joke. Not many Arsenal fans know but we missed out on Ronaldinho because of this when he was leaving Gremio.

Ronaldinhio joined Barca in 2003 and gained nationality in 2007, that makes it 4 years for a brazilian.

Silva isn’t eglible to get a visa from the UK Home Office. However, FIFA can award him a ‘special talent’ visa so he can play in England.

Arsenal were promised they would get one for him, but for some reason FIFA have back tracked. Still an appeal anyway.

Hmm, FIFA denying an English club a previously promised visa after an English program documenting FIFA corruption airs and FIFA calls the English “arrogant” in the ensuing backlash of the awarding of the World Cup. Doesn’t seem suspicious at all.

    Ah ok Jamie, cheers.

I guess it makes sense that FIFA have to be the people who award the special talent visa, the Home Office are hardly going to be in a position to judge whether a footballer deserves one or not.

Surely we should get it on appeal

Judging by his attitude at other clubs I’d rather not have him at Arsenal. He falls out with everyone and is very disruptive

This smacks of pettiness on the part of FIFA after many in UK football questioned their World Cup selection. The fact that FIFA can award “special talent” visas for the UK is simply ridiculous. If a sporting body is judging who deserves to get a footballing visa for the UK it should be the FA, not FIFA.

Anyway, who is a better judge of young footballing talent? Wenger or some faceless bureaucrat in FIFA?

Did we not bung Blatter and his cronies enough money?

Can not believe this news, was so looking foward to him arriving in january,
I agree with post above, I cant see him playing for us now, he needs to develop at a world class club and sending him out to a feeder club will not do for his education.

    screw FIFA

This is bad news this loaning people out for 3 years is bol** and doesnt work. I think the reason they backtracked may have been Wenger spoke out about the World Cup decision and wasnt very positive about how FIFA make it.

A bad day for the club.

Arsenal need to pay up. Simple. Manchester United got the permits for both Da Silva twins. They obviously got out the green, seeing as that is the only way FIFA get anything done.

Once again the septic tank that if FIFA messes up. Surely I’m not the only one who’s sick of them, there has to be a better way to do things. I wonder what could be done to disband FIFA and start a new, transparent, governing body. It’s obvious that they’re corrupt and know little or nothing about the beautiful game.

I hope we can win and get the kid his visa, he looks like a very sharp player and someone I’d love to see rise up through the ranks as an Arsenal player.

Five years away from the club won’t do him any good. Heck, I want to see Pedro now I don’t want to wait five years to see Wellington.

Is the back tracking down to the fact that recently Wellington hasn’t actually been near the first team set up at Fluminense and therefore it’s hard to see him as a special talent? FIFA could argue that if he was so special then his club manager wouldn’t have froze him out. Hence the appeal will hang on Arsenal’s ability to convince FIFA that the Fluminense’s behavior doesn’t reflect on the boy’s talent but on other factors.

Do other European clubs have a shot at him if he is denied a permit by FIFA, Jamie?? Like, could Barca come in and steal him from us?? He would fit in well there seeing as they can’t produce a worthy left winger from their academy…I still think we will keep Wellington in the end. Call it blind faith, but I mean come on, his family loves us!! And he wants to play here!! He knows that Andrei Arshavin won’t last forever and that he would have the best chance to make it here, at Arsenal…right??

Pure politicks as SR players get parachuted over LB Hale End players. eg Ramsey v Wilshire or Vela v JET. Until this bollocks ends English kids should leave and get 1st team games elsewhere.

FIFA is doing its best to wreak revenge on the premier league. It does not like the way it trawls the world signing up young talent from abroad. Along with the recent rebuke for media coverage surrounding the 2018 world cup bid, this is another kick out by FIFA and Mr Blatter.

Also, you should blame the home office for handing unecessary power to fat blatter. this boy is coming to uk to work and pay taxes why is he not allowed to win work permit straight away? why do we have to go to fifa for the so called special talent visa?
