Arsenal Scouting Charlton Defender Jenkinson

Arsenal are scouting Charlton Athletic defender Carl Jenkinson, but speculation of an imminent move is wide of the mark. Fellow London clubs Fulham and West Ham have also made checks on the 19-year-old.

Charlton confirmed yesterday that Jenkinson had turned down the opportunity to extend his contract, and that he would be free to leave The Valley in the summer. The promising right back only broke into the first-team in December, following a short loan spell with Eastbourne Borough.

However, he has been on the radar of Premier League sides for a number of years. Manchester United were close to signing Jenkinson as a 17-year-old, but the transfer collapsed. He had also been watched during last seasons FA Youth Cup campaign, where he captained Charlton’s Under 18’s.

Carl is a six foot one inch right back, who can also play in central defence or as a left back. Noted for his stylish and composed play, the London-born prospect has represented both England and Finland at international level. Jenkinson is currently the captain of the Fins Under 19 team, but has not decided on which country he will represent in the long term.

Jenkinson will be available on a free transfer in the summer, but due to UEFA rules, Charlton will expect a compensation fee of around £250,000.

It would be a good catch for us, if we manage to sign him. As it is, we do not have any promising youngster coming through in the RB position.

Also, he should choose to represent Finland in the long run.

I think Angha can become a really promising RB, he loves getting forward, is technically gifted, his crosses are good and in his first reserve game he played a perfect through ball which almost led to a goal even though he was playing as LB

Arsenal are after a young RB aren’t they?
They tried to sign the Dinamo Zareb kid in the winter but were put off by their 15 million euro asking price
If he’s got the talent then I think we should sign him, very little risk involved in this transfer (something that wenger loves)
    Has anybody seen him play?

He’s nothing special. He’s similar to Martin Kelly at Liverpool. I reckon he might end up in the middle some time. I don’t think he has the pace to battle top wingers. Angha is much better. We might still sign him and see where he fits in I guess. Especially since he’s only going to be 250K.

Charlton fans are furious with him.

    Calling him a judas etc.

Apparently he was on loan at eastborune played 9 games and said it “Was a dream to play first team games”

9 games later he decides to turn down a contract.

Hes an Arsenal fan btw the way family are big arsenal fans.

Seems to have his head turned

Hes English we should be signing English players players.

Or british players these guys will be loyal to arsenal.

I think the more British players we have in the team the better it is.

Look at barcelona full of Spanish players.

I want arsenal to have alot of british players it helps the fans as well

Please enough of this garbage. We want our players to be loyal and we need more fighters, yes, but ffs the invincibles had 2 english/british players. Nationality is not the most important factor.
I think the youth policy at arsenal has contributed to the apparently less loyal players at the club. Wenger makes it all about them, rather than about the team. And how can the more senior players really be expected to take the club seriously when walcott (and I think bendtner) got 60k pw contracts before they’d even played well two games in a row?! It’s no wonder flamini left. Going by those contracts we should have offered him 200k pw.

      @Davi,
So concentrating on youth has brought loyalty DOWN? How does that make sense?

Buying players young and developing them is exactly how you foster loyalty to the club.

And you speak of loyalty and then mention Flamini? Priceless.

You obviously didnt understand what I was saying.
The young players are brought here and pampered, treated as though they’ve already made it just because they played well once or twice; walcott and bendtner are prime examples of that.
I mention flamini because he was clearly so important in 2008, our best player by miles imo, and yet be given a contract similar to these young pretenders who had only shown potential. How can you expect players like him and hleb to be loyal?
The focus on the young players seems to be all about them. It’s “you can be the best player in the world” (and therefore play for anyone, even barcelona) rather than “you can be a part of the best TEAM in the world” which is the message we should be sending to them. That is what barca, and to be frank Utd, are doing differently and they are seeing better results overall. The fact Utd can get average players like o’shea and gibson to do well for them is strong evidence to support my argument.

What utter tosh you are spouting. Walcott got a good contract after his England exploits. Any English player will be on top dollar and Theo has been excellent. No way is bendtner on £60k a week.

      Take your doomer bollocks elsewhere

You have NO FUCKING IDEA what you are on about.

You are assuming all your points based on what? Somewthing in the tabloids or from talk shite.

The nature of the game now is to pay big money for kids who have won fuck all. Thats just how it is for everyone at top level football. It stinks but thats how it is. To suggest our young players are any different to other top teams is a weird one.

Yeah that must be it Davi, Flamini must have left because of what Theo was earning. He was so loyal to Marseille, that’s gotta be the explanation.

      Moron.

Stop spouting garbage before someone catches your stupid.

You haven’t really answered any of my points, just went right for the personal attacks. Admirable.
      I’ll reiterate:
Flamini: our best player – offered little more than the kids who hadn’t played well for 2 games in a row. Also played LB in the defence that took us to the CL final, only to be left out for Mr British Loyalty himself.
Theo & Bendtner: 60k pw without having to earn it.
Yes, it’s hard to see why some players are less loyal.

And if you want to say I don’t have the real facts, ok fair enough; I can only put out what I read somewhere. But you don’t have enough evidence to call many of our former players disloyal either. Adebayor has said he was forced out of the club, he didnt want to go, but everyone calls him disloyal, basically because it was man city who bought him, and because they didn’t like him for other reasons.

How about some real evidence that british players are more loyal. Ashley cole (the only british player to go through the youth team to reach the first team in recent years, apart from wilshere, obviously)? Bentley? Sol campbell showed a lot of loyalty to spurs didn’t he? Being british doesn’t mean a thing. It’s all about money.

How about you actually debate my words instead of resorting to attacks?

Anyway, I’ve slung a lot of mud in theo’s direction, which I don’t mean as an attack on him. He’s been fantastic for us this year, and he has always put in the effort, but I disagree with how he was treated in previous seasons. Too much 1st team exposure and too much MONEY too soon (although I don’t believe the money went to his head at all). The world cup disappointment was the first real knock to his career since he joined arsenal, and it did him the world of good imo. Playing well (in ONE game) for england doesn’t count as being a consistent, reliable player for ARSENAL and therefore should have no bearing on the amount of money he makes playing for us.

There is no loyalty in the game not from clubs, players or managers unless it is in there best intrests to be so in the first place, and they all treat fans like idiots so get used to it, because it is not going to change anytime soon.

I agree, i miss the good old days when Arsenal was a english team, nowdays it feels more like the french foreign legion. I understand that a team with only british players would suck but it feels like Arsenal have lost their identity with all the foreign players we have, the players aren’t acting like a team anymore, there is no one standing up for one another like before, we have no Keown anymore who will get the players going and who can get a bit ugly against opponents. It just doesn’t feels like Arsenal anymore to me.

First of all British and English are diffrent things. A Scot is still a forienger. Ramsey is still foreign. So to say that they will be more loyal (and thats your mainly point) is wide of the mark.

How loyal has Rooney been, or Bentley, or Owen or Ferdinand or Milner or Barry etc etc.

I could probably count on one hand the amount of disloyal players Wenger has brough through (Anelka, Flamini, Edu…) and most have their reason’s and them reasons are universal to any player, Money and Game Time, and to a lesser extent, the ability to win trophies, which as we know can cost a team dearly (Henry).

One club players are a thing of the past, its not a bad thing, its what gives us the chance to sign players from all over the world. This is the game we support for better or worse.

Out of all the positions , we need a right back( and probably a striker). The other positions are occupied for the next 5-10 years. We do not need to buy anyone else in the near future. I watched the Croatian kid and he looks brilliant but if we can not get him and if this Carl Jenkinson is good enough we better buy him. Also, Martin Angha sucks in central defense but I agree that he is a really good full back and he can make it at Arsenal as full back. Sagna is 28 and in 3-4 years he will be past it. Jenkinson will be 22 by that time so it sounds good.Maybe Jenkinson and Angha can be the new Sagna,Eboue at right back for years to come. I think we need more English players(like Jenkinson) because the referees will help us more.

This would be great if it happens, because Arsenal has a huge, huge lack of good young right backs. Gavin Hoyte, at 20, is unlikely to be a future star, and the Dinamo Zagreb kid Vrsaljko is too expensive. We could sign this kid and give Hoyte as compensation!

My Charlton supporting mate will be really pissed off if any team (especially Arsenal) pick him up for £250K.

I can see why small clubs get upset.

Do yourself a favour, severe ties with friends or “mates” that support other teams. It will be a hard decision in the early days and you might even miss them, but in the long run you will be a far better person for it.

Charlton should have convinced him sooner to sign a long-term contract. Man Utd are after the kid and they’re sending him off to Eastbourne Borough? Doesn’t sound like they had much of a well-laid plan on how to retain and develop him…

He’s certainly got glaring potential, I think he needs a bit of practice. Hopefully some time with Vermaelen if he joined to perfect the glare, particularly the technique for the mouth. Could be promising if he spends a spell in a lower league, they don’t hold back on the glares down there…

This is the type of wenger’s signing cheap and good so we need jenkinson at arsenal as a back up for sagna and to fight for the position with him then eboue can be sold because he is no more good defensively like 3 year back, some rumour says manu are interesting in buying jenkinson but i don’t thing so because they have rafeal and o’shea that can play in that position while i believe the player will prefer a move to arsenal than manu.
