Vermaelen Set For Reserves Come Back

Thomas Vermaelen is set to feature for Arsenal’s Reserve team before the end of the season, according to BBC journalist David Ornstein. Vermaelen has now returned to training following successful surgery on his Achilles.

The 25-year-old was scheduled to play for the second string in February, after turning to surgery to cure a long standing Achilles tendon problem, which has kept him out since September. However, Arsène Wenger later back tracked, and ruled Vermaelen out until the end of the season

Since then, Thomas has been training on his own at London Colney and is said to be making impressive progress. The club are now looking to arrange a selection of ‘behind closed doors’ friendly games to introduce the defender back to action, as there is only one game left in the Premier Reserve League season.

It unlikely that Vermaelen will play for the first-team again this term, but a spell with the Reserves is seen as the ideal opportunity to build up his fitness ahead of pre-season.

Wish this news has come a little earlier though. Hopefully he will have injury free season next year and be a valuable member of the team. I think him and Koscielny will form a great partnership.

Hopefully it’ll be Vermaelen and Djourou rather than Vermaelen and Koscielny. Djourou’s proven he’s a much more capable centre back.

Djorou is better than koscielny and would perform a great partnership with Verm!!!!!!!!!!

Although i reckon if we sign a new CB in the summer get rid of squillaci and mybe get in (cahill or sakho)!! and use koscielny and djorou as back ups that would be great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree that verm will be be paired with kos and not djo cos verm n djo are similar enough in that they are very composed on the ball and add to attack whereas kos is an out and out defender relishing one-on-one situations

    D-Gooner..

I think eventually next season injuries permitting it will be TV and JD… that sounds good.. JD reading the game more aerial presence due to him being 6″4… Kos will become an amazing CB and i think that means we have 3 really strong CBs.. Verm has the tendancy to attack the ball and so does Kos..I think thats why JD is so important as he hoovers, sorry vacuums, up everything else. Kos and Verm have kind of like the same mentality in being they try to nick the ball. This is part of the reason i believe TV will slot straight in next to JD seamlessly. fingers crossed. :-). PS TV’s distribution is immensely missed aswell as his goals.. i’m rambling but i think i read a stat that he hadnt misplace a single pass in the first 5 games last season.

Fortunately there is no prospect of the silly snake Dein coming back into the fold.
    1) He wanted Arsenalto play at Wembley
    2) He believed we needed a sugar-daddy like Abramovich to be able to compete with ManU and Chelsea
    3) He found Kroenke but then Stan saw straight through him and gave him the bum’s rush
    4) Then he sold out to the highly undesirable Usmanov who like Kroenke quickly kicked him out of Red and White.
    5) His son keeps trying to sell Cesc to Barcelona
A man of appalling judgement and proven treachery, why on earth anyone thinks he should be involved with Arsenal again is beyond belief.

Good to see him but too late in the season I wonder how our medical team got this so wrong.
But geez do fans for many teams overrate their injured players a bit, he’s a very good player but not that good if we had bought another cb we might of conceded and dropped less points this season.
You could partly blame the coaching though.

    To Jenkinson…

Despite you dissing Dein, he brought Wenger to the club which brought us unprecedented success. And he was right to try to get a sugar daddy. Every fucking team that wins has a sugar source nowadays. Usmanov has like 18,000,000. He was right. He knew that was the only way to compete. As soon as Dein is sacked we are shit, and I don’t think that’s a coincidence. Everyone needs to stop hating Usmanov because he’s fat and illegal. All these fuckers in football are dodgy as fuck; Ferguson, Abram etc.

Sell your soul and all that bollocks… who cares.

Fuck off “D” and go suppport some other club. I don’t want Arsenal to give p it’s principles and sell itself out to a sugar daddy. If you want that then go support illegal operations such as Barca or Real Madrid or support a club such as Man City or Chelsea. We are competitive and we will win a trophy next year without a doubt. All we need is a couple re-inforcements and we’ll win a lot. Fuck off please.

Those who think we need a sugar daddy are half right. In two years UEFA will require their teams to balance the budget. If you don’t than you wont be allowed to play in Europe. This means Arsenal and Bayern are the only large teams in Europe who don’t have to change their business model to compete. Add to that we have a young maturing team. We needed a sugar daddy four years ago. Now we don’t. We have money, a great stadium and an academy teeming with talent. We’ve been in CL for 15 straight years and our wages are sorted out.

We are about to enter into a Golden Age for Arsenal that will make the Viera years look lean. Just my opinion.

@Milo you are one of guyz i look forward to seeing their post here but u just disappointed me big time.Barca are miles ahead of us,buy big name players @ big prices, won like 10 trophys (dont quote me) in 4 years have the best academy in europe,i agree real have gone overboard but the presence of barca have also not helped them.On us being competitive i see us more like pretenders cos its kills me when my team cant even defend a 4goals lead or the manager saying we take inspiration or is it motivation from a match we couldnt get a shot at goal or consectively droping point at home against teams of mostly average players. We’ve have always felt the coming season was our yr for hw long now things must change for us to drag us across d line less i forget posting comments like fuck off & support other teams is just …… this is d only medium 4 some of us to express ourselves, letting it out can only make us feel better.

@ fatai…Barca are funded illegally by the Spanish government as is real Madrid. They do have the best academy, but they are still millions, and i mean millions of pounds in debt. I’m no genius, look it up yourself!! It’s true!! And there’s no sense in even going in to how far in debt Real Madrid are. These 2 clubs are introuble financially if they are not funded by underhanded methods. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like these methods are going to be exposed and irradicated any time soon.

my god our fan with the myth that our defence is crap.look at the league table ,we have second best defence in the EPL behind the chav,
maure have 4th best but they still in front so our defence not our major problem.
our problem was and is still our midfield with no cover for song (frimpong and coquelin maybe),except for theo no really have pace for our type of play,no depth in the striker area(the yearly injury of persie, chamak loosing form ,bendtner be bendtner average striker extraordinaire

good to see Vermy back soon ,get well and get ready for next year

This guy has it right. The exact same thing I have been saying. We lack 3 things. A top class winger that has pace, links up well, scores goals and gets assists. As for cover, we need another Striker because with RVP always injured, you can’t win the league with out a top class striker. Last but not least, we need a true holding midfielder other then Song. Everything else is perfect for next season.

but we definately need a massive clearout and spend big money on a striker, a matchwinner.
our attack was the most disappointing this season with our first choices often injured and their backups failed to delivered, bendtner and arshavin in particular. we drew against the likes of leyton and that was embarrassing.

Did I mention we are UNDEFEATED in the league with Koscielny and Djurou playing together at the back. It amazes me how people fail to see how ridiculously good Koscielny will become. Of course he has a couple flaws that he can improve on. He has made a couple mistakes and he needs to get stronger but he has more potential than any of our centerbacks and I am saying that as a massive TV5 (its ok to use initials a couple times but not your whole story) and think Djurou is quality. Koscielny reads the game like no center back I have ever seen. It is amazing how many times he steps in front of the attacker to intercept the pass.

we should still be looking for a first choice CB this summer. i’m not even going to consider TV as a player untill he has an injury free pre-season and first couple of months if that happens the he would patner the new signing with JD and LK as the back up. SS is finished imo and players like KB or IM can be loaned and brought bac if needed.

We should not expect players who have missed whole seasons to be able to walk back into the team.

What are you…a 13 year old girl? Why are you using initials like you are texting? Anyways, anyone that still says we need a new starting centerback has no hope. We are undefeated in the league with Koscielny and Djurou at the back so how do you figure that combo is not good enough even if Vermaelen has a slow recovery?

sorry for abbreviation the names that we all know and i see lots of people on here use. i didn’t realise it was a crime punishable by mockery. To say that Koscielny is good enough for the arsenal team is something i have come to accept as rubbish. He is okay for back-up but he hasn’t got it at the highest level, as has been shown time and time again in the games that really matter. I would like to see figures of who gives away the most penaltys as i think he would easily be our number one. I have no complaints about Djourou but i still think that a first choice centre back would not only push the other players on, but also help us when it really matters. Our goals against, this term has been decent, but the quality of the league has gone down this year and we are still letting 3 in against west brom. So yes i would still say the defence is an area we need vast improvement on.

Milo…. You are never going to win arguments on here because people have no proper perspectives. Arsenal is one of the very few teams that runs their club right and with in their means. Barcelona is a joke in all honesty. Yes, we all admire how they play but everything else about the club is a joke. Tired of hearing about this great academy. It is a myth. The spanish youth setup as a whole gives them a huge advantage over English clubs but yet look at how many players they actually had from the very beginning and play in their 1st team. Xavi, Bojan, and 1 more but it is slipping my mind. They are massively in debt as you said. Sure Arsenal could be on that level if we spent 500 million euros that we don’t have. On top of all that, they are hypocrites in everything they do from complaining about us signing there 16 year old even though they do the same to saying Chelsea spent way to much on Torres and they would never spend that even though the year before they did the same with Ibrahimovic. My favorite though is how they are always talking about Fabregas needing to join them to win trophies (Xavi said that), even though in a 6 year period up until 2003-04 when Xavi was the same age as Fabregas, Barcelona were horrible. Hell, in the 2002-03 season Barcelona finished 6th in their league. Sorry for my rant, but I just find Barcelona to be an appalling club.

Off topic….I enjoy the beautiful football we play but i think sometimes we need to curb that i lil bit and take risks and score goals…..another place i think we are lacking a lil bit is tactics. Every great coach changes tactics depending on the player we have available and the opponent. Try playing arshavin off bendtner/chamkakh esp wen VP or fab4 is injured. i think we also need a poacher like chicharito who will always at the right place at the right time…….sorry for talking too much, its my first time commenting

You need to look at the proper perspective, not a false one or made up one. Arsenal are not Barcelona, Real Madrid, Chelsea, Man City, etc. We are a club that builds the right way. You can not expect trophies automatically when we are working on an 8th of the budget that our competitors are working with. Hell if Man City continue to spend like they do, we might not win the league for the next 10 years and it does not matter what coach comes in, you can not expect a team built on 100 million pounds to automatically finish above 400 to 1 billion pound teams. It is simple logic. Now there is no better man to help us try and achieve this than Wenger but it is simply ridiculous to keep criticizing a man who is currently sitting above 2 of the mega rich teams in the table and another team that just spent 35 million pounds on a striker. We were knocked out of competitions only to Manchester united, a team that is on to the semi finals of the Champions league and we even out played them in the fa cup but their keeper played amazing. Then we lost to Barcelona who almost no one beats and we were 25 minutes away from beating them until the ref took the game into his own hands. Last but not least we made it to a final where we had so many shots on goal but their keeper was brilliant and we had a freak accident. What more do you want a manager to do? Go out and score and ref the game himself?

I agree with Shanr about Barcelona. I do think that Koscielny will improve. IF he shows in the early going that he hasn’t, then I think that we can only hope that Thomas Vermaelen comes back to full fitness. We don’t really need to spend a whole bunch with our defence. I am a bit more concerned with the form of Gael Clichy than I am central defence. He gets caught so amyntimes either drifting in field or getting caught too far up the pitch that I worry that he will never learn or return to the form he had of 3 yeaars ago. 3 years…that’s a long time in football!!!
