Jenkinson Will Get First-Team Opportunity

Carl Jenkinson’s short-term future with Arsenal will be decided during the summer, when Arsène Wenger will hand the 19-year-old a chance to earn a first-team place during pre-season.

Jenkinson revealed the news in his first official interview after completing his £1 million switch from Charlton Athletic. The lifelong Arsenal fan, who was in the stands at the Emirates on numerous occasions last season, told Arsenal Player he will be given the chance to prove himself, and complete the journey from fan to player.

“The plan is for me to go away with the first-team over pre-season. It’s up to me to prove myself, and show that I’m a good player.”

Carl is expected to move between the Reserves and first-team squad during the season, offering both Wenger and Neil Banfield an option anywhere in defence.

The Finland Under 21 international will be one of the first faces at London Colney when training resumes in under a months time.

I hope he impresses in pre season!

We bloody do need full backs versatile tall players!

JS any chance of arsenal going in for Jack rodwell?

I really think he could be cheaper than henderson and phil jones and be potentially better than both and can play as a defensive midfielder and centre back!

Wenger inherited a fantastic defence, his choices since then, bar a few exceptions have left alot to be desired.

I hope Jenkinson bucks the trend and turns out to be a bargain buy, and not a bargain bin buy!

Lauren, Campbell, Toure, Cole were the defence that were The Invicibles, with Keown coming on for 2 min cameos just to get a winners medal. Wenger brought them all through, so ur point is invalid. Not to mention the more recent success like Vermaelen and we don’t know yet if Koscielny is still to become a great CB

Keep remembering the invincibles. I have followed the Arse for 40+ years. This is the least positive I have been about them since the 70s when QPR were tearing up the old 1st division. Lets face it we dont have the desire to spend, and our squad is full of wanna-bes that dont wann-do.

A few diamonds, but too many make-weights that Arsene has kept faith with, but who are now holding the club back.

Enjoy the Champions league this season you rememberers of the Invincibles, for I cannot see us being there the season after.

Look at what Liverpool are doing, look at Man U, Man C, even Spuds. Unless he spends wisely on mature players with experience, we have no chance. We were after all in free-fall before the season ended. If the season had gone on for a few more weeks, we would have not finished 5th!

Wasn’t Ashley Cole an Arsenal fan? Problem is our club is just too f-ing tight, pay the players what there worth. Same thing happened with Ashley now where looking to let it happen again with nasri. Letting our best players leave shows a lack of ambition.
How much will it cost to buy another player of nasri quality £25m? why not just give him the £110k per week he’s asking for? that’s just £5.7m per year! if they let him go then it just proves that we have a bunch of idiots running our great club.

Fabregas earns £110,000 per week, Nasri wants to be on the same pay level he is, because he believes he was as influential last season as Fab was…

Which is more or less true, because Fab had a down year, but overall Fabregas is worth more to this team, even with his heart in Barcelona.

Nasri does deserve a pay rise, however should be equal to Fab, I don’t know. You can’t always blame a player for wanting more money sometimes. Players had a very limited time to be at their best, and when you have a good season and you are due for a contract, you gotta get the most of out it. Even if that sometimes means it will be with a different club.

Clubs will only use a player so long as he is useful, then they ship him off. So it works both ways.

Plus, in two years, Jack might be well deserving of that £120,000 per week, at least at the rate as he is improving. If he can add a better passing game in the final third and improve his goal scoring, definitely worth it.

I think we really can give Nasri the pay rise he wants, because even if he does sign a new deal and Arsenal are just looking to sell…there aren’t very many capable, and realistic targets that Arsenal are looking at or can afford.

Wenger will make a profit again no doubt, and the £30m we had to spend this season can add to the £30m we had last season, and the £30m the season before that and we’ll have £100m to spend next season lol

Nasri is as good as Fabregas? Fabregas has lead the league in assist almost every year sense he was like 18. Fabregas is a 1 in a million type of talent that will eventually go down with the Zidane and Platini’s of the world. Nasri is a very talented player but there are a lot of players like him in football. I agree Nasri should get payed well and even be the 2nd highest paid player maybe but for him to demand as much as Fabregas would be absurd. The problem then becomes, you let one player demand his way into being over payed then it is a trickle down affect. You better get ready to start over paying.

It is not a profit margin because that money goes back out to pay for the stadium loan and no, we are not and have not been on the same level as those teams. Love the passionate Arsenal supporter so he will never leave responses. I would guess 90 percent of footballers don’t play for their childhood club. Even when it comes down to a head to head choice, your club you supported as a child does not come into play that often. Ramsey and Smalling are to examples. Leaving clubs is the same. More things go into it then just who you supported as a child. Ask Beckham, Gareth Barry and others about that. Footballers will always be open to leaving if your club is not the current top club and if there is more money out there. If Barcelona come in for Jenkinson and they are still the top club, there is a good chance he will go. This is how the world works so pretend it isn’t is always just going to leave you upset. Players come and go, that is how it has always worked.

he had a good half-year up till christmas when he had a head start on other players who were at the world cup, then after christmas he was anonymous.

‘if barca come in for jenkinson there is a good chance he will go’

what, just because barca are better right now? what about his family being all arsenal? would barca play him as much as arsenal? can he be bothered to learn catalan? maybe he loves playing in england, playing for wenger, playing arsenal’s style…

as long as arsenal are competing at the top level, in with a chance of trophies, big games every week, decent wages relative to other top clubs, top players will stay.

players are not all simple morons who go for the highest wages on offer or the most prestigous club on offer. they consider lots of things.

First of, I was referring to in the future if Jenkinson turns out to be a top talent and if Barcelona are still the creme of the crop. Yes, this is how football has always worked. You can live in denial but the 2 things most players go for are success and money. Loyalty usually runs hand and hand with those 2. You can look at football and it is extremely easy to see. How many quality players played their whole careers out at a lesser club? I can only thing of like Mathew Le Tissier. Now this is not to say Arsenal are not a great club but until we are top of world football, we will always lose players to higher up clubs or clubs with more money. The overall point is that people need reality checks and instead of moaning about Wenger losing it or other things, just get behind the players we still have. It will even get harder because Manchester City is driving up the price of doing business for everyone.

he didn’t lead assist this year, in fact he’s been crap for the whole of this year. I wasn’t alive in platini’s era so i won’t comment on that one. But Zezu? As much as i love fabs there’s no way he’s anywhere near zidane level thats just crazy talk. Real paid £60m for zezu 10 years ago in todays money that would be at least £100m. thats messi/ronaldo/henry/maradona/pele level! Nasri for me has more chance of reaching that level than fabs, reason being nasri can use skill and balance an take on players fabs can’t. Fabs is fantastic at holding the ball and playing the perfect pass but his ability to run though defences is not on that level.

You don’t think Zidane ever had a poor season lol? Not sure how anyone could honestly think Fabregas can not go down as one of the all time greats. By the way, I said he will end up there, not that he has already reached that. Fabregas at 23 is at a higher level then any of the players including Zidane and Xavi were. Fabregas already has over 90 assists for Arsenal. He was 3rd in the league in assists despite missing like 13 games. The man had a season of 15 goals and 15 assists from center mid 2 years ago and 19 goals and 18 assists in all competitions. He got the game winning assist to win the world cup. He has done all of this before even reaching his prime.

H14… my point is you are out of your mind. Have you ever heard of a guy called Beckenbauer? Zidane was not know for blazing past players. He was known for his amazing first touch, ball control and vision. Muller was not known for running past players. Platini was not known for blazing past players. Football is not about simply running at players mate. Not sure how you understand football but Fabregas has some of the most ridiculous talent you will see in football. His vision is 2nd to none combined with the fact that his pin point passes are not just always to keep possession but he has the ability to make the hardest pass in football which is the final ball aka the assist. He has amazing ball control as well and he is adding goal scoring to his arsenal. He is like combining the best of Xavi and Iniesta into one player. The likes of Chelsea and Man City have turned football into a very screwed system i.e. fans begging their club to run into debt by paying the demands of all players. If player “A” gets a massive pay rise I bet that the following morning there will be a dozen agents banging on the CFOs door wanting more for his man. I’m not blaming fans for wanting to keep the best players but blaming the system. Both FIFA and the Premier League need a good shake up.

No reason why he cannot figure fairly prominently.

Gibbs has risen to almost parity with Clichy, without having done a great deal to warrant potentially being 1st choice LB next season.

So no reason why, in the event of a good pre-season & 2 or 3 good reserves games, he can move ahead of Eboue & be back up RB well before Christmas. We sure need one.

Nasri is nothing like Zidane. Nasri is only compared to Zidane because he is the next great french attacking mid. Zidane is more comparable to Fabregas then Nasri but the point remains the same….. Platini, Zidane, Beckenbauer, Muller, Puskas, Zico, Van Basten, Mattheus, Maldini, etc. All these players were known for other things, not just running past players with pace. Xavi and Iniesta just finished 2nd and 3rd for the worlds best player and Sneijder was not far behind. To say that Fabregas can not go down as one of the best ever because he is not a winger or a pace player is silly.

BornGunner fair point man! but my whole argument is we need to do everything in our power to keep nasri at the club. If that means paying the guy 110k on par with fabs then so be it, In my opinion he’s just as good. Ok he’s not done what fabs has done for us but he’s not been here as long either. he won french player of the year and for the 1st half of this season was the best in the prem. If the club let him go over an extra £10k per week then they’re very stupid and will live to regret that decision guaranteed! One of very few players who could replace him is Hazard and he’s going to cost £20m minimum, that £20m can pay nasri wages at £110k for nearly 4 years.

The problem is not that paying him a few more dollars is that big of a deal. The issue is if you over pay him than you must be prepared to over pay everyone because you would be setting the standard for contracts. That means it will cost you a lot more money every year.

Cesc to me is a better player when there both on form, plus i think your captin should be your highest paid player at the club as he should be the leader. Its easy to say its just 10k but the club needs to think about the next player to say they want a extra £10k or there leaving. Arsenal need to find a solution as i for one dont want to see Cesc or Narsi leave the club just yet.

Yes, players are motivated mostly by money. But I think its about other factors as well like how much you admire the manager and also how successful is the club. I think the lack of success by the club over the years is going to be a growing problem when trying attract and retain great talent. I am not bashing the club or the manager, in fact I am still a great fan of both. I am just saying what I think. The club needs to improve the team drastically soon. for me it’s only van persie, nasri and fabs who can demand that kind of money, that because those 3 can walk into a number of teams and earn even more than that. We can’t just pay players less than there worth and then get upset when they want to leave. Ashley left us because wenger refused to budge from 55k to 60k. That wasn’t as bad because wenger had clichy as back up. I think it’s inevitable fabs is going barca this season. i don’t mind that as he could have went last season but stayed. Also we have whilshire and rambo to step up. If nasri goes then we currently have no one to replace him, arshavin’s wasted playing on the left. The only player is maybe Vela, hopefully he can show his class this season.

what you don’t know what ur talking about man. if wenger said to the board or dein pay the extra 5k, they would have simple. therefore yes it’s also wengers fault, the boards fault and yes deins fault too. but ur missing the point anyway i wasn’t on a wenger crusade. look back at my post, have i written anything bad about him? one little mention of his name and the AKB twat straight out to defend him. some of you fans make me laugh, seriously fix up. i’m entitled to my opinion just like any other fan. if i want to cuss the manager then i will. What I will not do is cuss the players! A lot of the wenger lovers on these blogs are the same ones on here slating our players week in week out. Those guys are the embarrassment, I’ve got nothin but love for our players and if wenger could actually pick a team and formation we may have actually won something this year.

Wow lol. Yes it is all Wengers fault. I hope they fire him so we can go back to a midlevel club. I am absolutely tired of over achieving thanks to Wenger’s amazing ability to work with far less money then the teams that the ridiculous fans expect him to beat. I am tired of watching entertaining football. I am tired of seeing us play in that beautiful stadium. I am absolutely tired of watching players like Henry, Pires, Fabregas, Vieira, Nasri, RVP that there would be no way we would be able to keep a hold of ever because we can not afford to pay them what some other clubs could but thanks to Wenger, we have players of this quality on less money. I pray that we could go back to the Arsenal glory days of the early to mid 90s where we finished in an impressive 10th and even 12th place and were about as entertaining to watching as a turtle. Wenger is the devil and we are horrible.

(Note for people that don’t get sarcasm….this is sarcasm)

Yep Shane, those dull days of Rocastle, Limpar, Wright, Merson, Campbell, Adams – they all lacked any flair and ability to excite – and Grahams pitiful record of only winning trophies in 5 of his 8 seasons.

Sadly typical of the modern day, ignore everything pre P.L fans to be so condescending towards players, their abilities and achievements that would walk into todays sides.

The days before Wenger were not as bad as they’re made out. Do not re-write history when Arsenal’s greatest moment was long before Wenger joined us. Boring Boring Arsenal clinching the title on goal difference in the last minute of extra time on a counterattack. If that’s too dull for you then shove it. Players like Rocastle, Wright, Thomas and even Parlour were great and club legends. Do you even know who Cliff Bastin is? And this is coming from a 17 year old who can’t even remember the glory of the invincibles because I didn’t follow football then.

Wenger is a great manager who has modernised Arsenal beautifully. In his career he’s helped develop some of the greats, from Weah to Fabregas. But he needs to be more tactically astute.

Personally, I think much of the problem lies with how far up the pitch we play. If we played more in midfield, the holes would appear for our attackers to have room to run into.

Back to Jenkinson, it was him or Vrsaljko and although it appears the latter may be more talented (could be proven wrong), I’d take Parlour over Denilson any day and the same applies here.

Yes I know about Arsenal’s long long ago (aka history) lol. We of course have had success in the past. My point was simply showing where we could very easily have been now if Wenger was not signed. Our consistency to finish in the top 4 was almost nonexistent in the years right before Wenger signed and that was at a time where the depth and money of other teams was not as team as it is now. My ONLY point was, we could have very easily become Newcastle, Everton, or Tottenham. How many clubs achieve more then us out of the teams with realistic budgets? Not many if any. By the way, if you would choose to trade Grahams sides for Wenger’s sides then fair enough but I seriously doubt you would.

Jenkinson seems like a good lad, committed to working hard and proving himself, and that’s what we need from a youngster, not someone who’s self-conceited. Not much to complain here, I believe he’s still quite raw, but we’re lacking in right-back prospects since the Hoyte brothers haven’t delivered, and I don’t think that the current solutions in the Reserves are playing in the right positions (I believe Eastmond and Coquelin played right-back in the past, as have Hajrovic and Angha). Jenkinson will probably be a starter in the Reserves, and serve as back-up for Sagna, and possibly succeed him if all goes well.

On the Nasri issue, he doesn’t deserve that much. Fabregas has been delivering consistently over the years, he may have had a poor season due to injury issues but nevertheless, he has proven quality. Nasri has only had a good half-season and has been inconsistent for the second half, how does that warrant 110k/week? Even the vice-captain doesn’t earn that much. 70k for Nasri, maybe, but 110k, no way.

Just because other clubs are paying inflated fees and wages doesn’t mean Arsenal has to do the same.

All the teams around us are improving while we’re selling our best players every year! That’s just great isn’t it, we’ll just carry on hoping for top 4 until our great teenagers grow up (2016?), hows that for sarcasm? Tell me something if we come 6th next season will you still want him as manager? Listen to Van Persie’s quotes from yesterday, even he knows we have no chance next season. He says we keep making the same mistakes every season. What do you call someone who makes the same mistakes over and over again? since 2007 in terms of watching great football we’ve been going backwards not forward and passing the ball sideways and refusing to shoot from outside the box does not qualify as great football.

SO WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU WANT? Jesus dude….do you want us to spend money that we don’t have and run our club into the ground like we are leeds or portsmouth? Do you want a sugar daddy owner to bail us out even though it seems like they still put their clubs in debt? What the hell do you want them to do? Like I said, fire Wenger and we will not magically have more money than Manchester City or Chelsea. Fire Wenger and we will either be battling for the Europa league spot or getting ourselves into bad debt. Your choice. Maybe you should stop being to shallow minded about success and realize sometimes you have to build for it. It is pretty obvious that it is extremely difficult to win the title with how much some of these clubs are spending so like I have said, maybe a reality check is in order. I can’t wait until they do end up firing Wenger. 8th place, here we come and everyone will be happy.

Face facts ar5-n1 are a feeder club to barca and man utd. Why do you think Cesc and Nasri are showing their nickers to both clubs. The day you buy some no mark for peanuts Man utd buy Jones for 16 mill and are looking to add Young to the mix for 15 mill.
You were paying the top English left back 25k and then refused to give him 55k which wasnt parity alongside the other international players. But now you call him Cashley. Sorry but since 2006 what has Cole won v ar5-l …. in arsene you rust- skinflint mugoffs who screw their supporters to pay shareholders.

The point is Shane that there is as much evidence that the building for success is not working as that it is when the the points tally and positions are not showing any improvement, whilst frailties are being repeated continually with no evidence of them being addressed.

Again you display characteristics of so many modern day fans (not just of Arsenal) with all emphasis on finishing 4th. The difference between 4th & 5th for over a century of football was minimal and no different from 5th to 6th etc. Now it is the chasm which seems to define success and falure.

Not every genuine supporter is satisfied purely with trophies or a 4th place finish.

Many supporters would not have such a feeling of frustration watching a very good side, giving their all from 1st game to last and playing to their maximum potential rather than a great side continually failing to live up to their potential, not addressing serial frailties and not always giving their most whether it be for parts of games or parts of a season and yes, even it it meant a drop down of a place or two in the league table.

This will get marked down as infers some criticism, albeit constructive but there is nothing said whatsoever that any non fairweather, jonny come lately supporter would disagree with.

I have stated many times what I want but I am also realistic. Of course I think we can win trophies and I want us to. My point was it is not as easy as people make it sound and we damn sure would not be close without Wenger in charge. I also have stated my reasons on why we fail at certain moment. The Emirates fans are horrible. Could you imagine playing in front of 60,000 of your own fans and them moaning at every miss pass or missed shot every single time. If the fans acted like they did in the first leg verse Barcelona then I guarantee we would have won a trophy. People seem to forget that players are human not robots. If you had 60,000 people follow you around moaning and bitching at you all the time, how up for the day would you be? Now if those 60,000 people were there cheering you on and pushing you forward how different would you feel?

By the way Shane, you’re making two seperate points in your arguments which are not necessarily linked, however the financial points you raise at the beginning I do actually agree entirely with.

im not sure of the point Shane at 15:20 is trying to make as i dont think you will find a single supporter (not one with a braincell) questions the Wenger appointment so asking where we would be without him is irrelevant. It is where we are going forward.

for my two cents on the two sides, I would have more confidence and belief in the AW side finishing far higher up the table than the early 90’s side.

on the other hand i would have far more confidence in the Graham early 1990s side being able to win either of the 2 domestic cups.

The European trophies have changed dynamics so much it is difficult, but you cannot deny this current side has a difficulty getting over the line, so it is reasonable to suggest that side was more likely to win a trophy, the following season – if winning trophies is what it is solely about (which to me it is not).

Good evening gents. Always a good read on young guns. Just to get back to the point one of my good friends is a charlton fan and has attended the games for the last few seasons. He told me about Jenkinson earlier on in the season and said he was a very good prospect. Good reader of the game…..which is sometimes what we lack at the back. We have pace and attacking flare but get caught out in possesion. One thing that keeps getting mentioned about Nasri is about is 2nd half of the season. He was our best player by a long way in the first half (Mostly when Fabregas was injured) taking more of a central role. I don’t think it was the fact of him being poor the second half, he was still better than most in the squad. Obviously we want players at the club that love the club and we get ticked off with those that want to leave for more money. The thing is lads….is real life…you may love your job but if someone offers you twice the amount…would you turn it down? I think Arsenal should try and keep Nasri regardless of how much they try and get pay him. I agree that RVP deserves it more. But Big clubs need to pay big money to keep there best player. Its just the world in which we live in wether we agree with it or not.
