Arsenal's Campbell Deal In Doubt

A Premier League rival has bettered Arsenal’s offer for Saprissa striker Joel Campbell, the players father has confirmed.

Arsenal agreed a fee and then terms on a five-year-contract last night, but the unknown English club moved this afternoon to offer Campbell a better package. The players father, Humberto, confirmed the news to La Nation, and says the family will meet tonight to decide on the next move.

“We got another very good offer from one of the great English teams, which is just as interesting in sporting terms to Arsenal, but also more economically.”

“I will meet now with my wife and together we will make the decision whether to sign with Arsenal, the other club, or wait for something else.”

Sparissa chairman Juan Carlos Rojas revealed last night that everything has been agreed with them, and that the only remaining detail was when Campbell would sign the contract.

Joel was absent from training with the Costa Rican Under 20 side today, as he bids to thrash out his future. A decision is expected shortly.

This is based on the comment I left to Jamie’s last article:

La Nacion which is one of the largest newspapers in Costa Rica have reported that a second English team has made a bid. They spoke to Campbell’s father who said that he had been asked not to reveal the name of the other team. He also mentioned that they were going to take their time to look at the other offer before making a decision.

It could be any of Utd, City, Spurs, Chelsea or Liverpool. They all have questionable values. The amusing thing is that the kid probably won’t be eligible for a visa, so won’t get to play for whoever bought them. If that club happens to be City, then they will probably forget they’ve bought him by the next transfer window.

first off in my opinion the people who at current time are handling the transfers at Arsenal with Gazidis have proved to be no more than incompetent and the man responsible for this deal concerning Campell proves that well he is not very competent now does he.?..
secondly i would think that both the players Father and himself are aware of joining Arsenal is a lifetime opportunity, probably the best chance he ever will get…and dont come dragging along with clubs like manure or citeh We The Arsenal are the best club alongside the catalunyan disaster…in bringing trough young talent..
and just giving up..letting players dictate isnt the answer there are no player that are above Our Club..and me im fed up with ingrates like cesc and nasri..they should never wear an Arsenal shirt again…we’ll get stronger without them..always..c’mon you gunners..

How can they be accused of being incompetent when the fee and terms were all agreed? Nope, totally wrong and without basis in facts.

If this story is true, then the player and family have been shmoozed and offered more money by another club. That happens in football all the time. It stinks, but thats how football operates nowadays. No doubt some agent with dollar signs for eyes has told Campbell and his people that he can earn more elesewhere.

No blame can be put at Arsenal or the South American representative’s door.

Jom you idiot……..any deals are made over a period of weeks If not months so that means AFc have been following Campbell since well before the Copa America. That also means, in case you haven’t figured this out yet, that other Clubs’ scouts have watched him. Hijacking deals is very common when a young player is involved and every club knows that Arsenal’s scouting network is worth watching. It is a cheap way to avoid investing in big-time scouts for themselves. Just ride on AFC’s coattails and step in with a bigger offer than Arsenal’s limited transfer fund can afford…now which Club would do that I wonder? the player has to agree to the deal and that is where AFC are at the mercy of the parents, the player, his agent, his former Club etc.

the only encouraging situation is that arsenal representatives are in costa rica right now and i hope whoever is flying there with bigger paycheck don’t make it in time he gets there only to find everything is signed, sealed and ready for the emirates.

You cant slag the kid off for wanting to make the right decision.
I hope he signs for us but lets get real people….

No trophies in 6 years because we have given far too many opportunities to far to many rough diamonds that when polished have turned out to be rough turds.

The diamonds that we do produce should be introduced to a team already packed with mentaly strong winners with experience.

    We can not offer that.

Why should campbell join us just because he will get the opportunity to play?

He might work his arse off for the next 3 years banging in 20 goals a season but our defence carries on conceding goals from every set piece and we finish fourth … again.

All I am saying is that this deal would have been sorted by now if the player 100% believed that he could be a leading star in the premier league and win trophies with arsenal.

This is what 6 years without a trophy has created.

Fingers crosed he does choose us because I think he will be a star.

Wow, the stupidity never ceases to plumb new depths. Can you thickos not get your heads around the idea that a player might be a great deal at one price – fee, wages, etc – and yet be a really poor one at a higher price? It’s not exactly rocket science.

Since this clearly isn’t a deal where the ability to finance it is an issue, it’s all about whether the player’s worth what someone will pay for him. Either Arsenal will increase their offer, or decide this completely unproven youngster is too much of a gamble at the higher price.

I see an awful lot of criticism of Arsenal but if you want to blame someone for the last minute hitch, blame the players agent. If my memory serves correctly, the story started off on Friday with TV coverage of Richard Law arriving at the airport and an interview with the players agent. I wonder who alerted the media which flight Law was on? Let’s not forget that Law, in 24-36 hours, was able to reach agreement in principle with both the club and the player only for some other club to throw a wrench into the works with a last minute proposal to the player.

Unfortunately nothing is “air tight” until all parties have signed. I read agreement in principle to mean that all the major sticking points have been agreed but nothing has been signed. I think you underestimate how difficult it is to get an agreement signed if one party has an incentive to wait. In this case, I think the agent is trying to “auction” his client to get the best deal. Arsenal were first and fast but, unfortunately, 24-36 hours is enough time for another club to get someone on a plane to Costa Rica to present a rival proposal. It’s sad and unfortunate but I think the agent’s stunt at the airport is to blame for giving another club enough time to react and not Law’s dealmaking prowess. Let’s hope that the coaching connection to Wenger and the fact we were first are enough to win the day.

What arsenal need to do is to get peeps to sign a disclosure contract before entering into talks, meaning that if the talks fail and they go to a rival bidder for more, then we’d be entitled to compensation to an amount more of what they’d get by taking the offer – that’d make em think twice!!

Let’s all wait for the father’s final decision then beforre we begin to throw stones at those responsible. Arsenal is a very stingy club. Let me clarify/qualify that statement.

We are frugal. We have a high wage bill already and we respect our wage structure. There’s no guarantee of winning trophies and making a certain amount of profit. Therefore, we set budgets and limits in advance, and if players and/or their representives want more than the “unchangeable” budgets allow, then we’ll take our money somewhere else.

I believe it’s annoying and unpleasant. But that’s life and business. There’s got to be a fine balance between winning trophies, appeasing fans and making profits. There is a catch 22 every which way we turn. a wise gamble must be taken. Spend the money and give us a better chance to win trophies, and show our players and fans that we mean business. Make more money available. Pay over the odds if you have to for 2 to 3 seasons.

We have great prospects who will then have an easier transition into an already winning team.

I just hope this gets sorted out before he leaves for the under 20 tournament. The longer this could take, the more likely both player and farher could be turned. As people have pointed out above, a meeting to try and push through the deal has already happend. So i hope to wake up tomorrow to see them signed, as i fear that his father will now wait until the under 20 world cup where a sterling peformence could attract even more clubs with bigger pockets that could blow us out the water finacially, without giving thought to his footballing develpment which would be best suited probally to us

Its a bit strange that La Nación is the only newspaper en Costa Rica that has written about the proposal from the other english club.

Anyway I guess that Campbell will be Arsenal player by the end of tomorrow.

What a total bunch of cretinous trolls blog this site. This is a tempest in a teapot IF it is,in fact, real. We have the best scouting and recruitment system in the EPL and easily as good as La Cantera (Barca) since we have to pay way over the odds for an English youth player while Barca is guaranteed to have NO competition for any kid they want. It is only the archaic Spanish laws that prevent them from having a total monopoly on any Spanish player who is under 17 since these kids can’t sign any contract until they turn 17. AFC have profited from this weird ruling to offer some of their best players a chance, which they always get if they can show they are good enough.
Therefore,we do have airtight contracts BUT since he is a minor,(under 21 in Latin America) he cannot sign anything without his parent’s permission. there is also usually a 48-74 hour cancellation period for any legal document in most South American countries, including Costa Rica, so we just have to chill and see what transpires.

When is the defence going to be fixed? It’s useless signing offensive players if the defence loses the game thru refusal to get a dominating centre back.
If this flaw aint fixed,Arsene/Arsenal can forget about winning the title.Of course the other central defenders may have shown 50% improvement but it aint good enough. It must be 100% or nothing.

What about 99%? Would you take 99%? Or would it then ridiculously have to be “nothing”? Everyone, seriously, before you post think about raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, take a nice calming breath and write something sensible.

Apparently Campbell is eligible for Irish citizenship and could have played for the Republic as his grandfather was an Irish missionary and his father has dual citizenship. He won’t need a visa since he may already have his EU passport under the Schenken agreement. He may, if he gets his passport, be eligible to be considered in the 25 player homegrown rule once he turns 21.

some people don’t wanna accept the fact we also develop youngsters who could play first team football. we cannot buy buy buy for the sake of it.
kyle bartley is commanding enough he only lacks premiership experience so he has to be assessed first before arsene decides to buy or not.
no need to get restless coz the transfer window is still opened. we will buy if we have to

People including Clichy seem to act like we lost because we are not good enough with big name players needing to be added but if you look at our record verse the top teams, we were very good. We were even going through verse Barcelona until the red card and even in the FA Cup, we lost to Manchester united and the only difference in that game was van der sar. We lost the league because when injuries hit, we lacked the a couple pieces that would turn draws into wins. That is it. That is one reason for Gervinho. He will get you goals and assists.

In my honest opinion, our starting 11 is the 2nd best starting 11 in the world and I think we proved that last year in the big games. Unfortunately all this gets clouded in the media’s constant desire to see us fail.

Arsenal’s policy of giving decent money for youth, and giving them a fair shot at the first team should favor Campbell to us.

Its not so much the fact of this deal turning a bit runny, its more the image it projects thats really rather frustrating. it would be nice to make a statement with a signing, big or small; that we are the arsenal, we want this player, and everyone else can fuck off.

how about he stays to adapt to english football, instead of exchanging him with someone who’ll also need time to adapt to english football.
he’s not gonna go on loan as he’s eligible to claim 5 years irish residency.
anderlecht wants 30 millions for lukaku i dont see arsene going anywhere near him.

is there any other club in the EPL that tries to conduct it business like us, with dignity and secrecy til the outcome is complete, I dont think so. If there are other English clubs in for the player then we would have heard from that club by now id imagine.

Dont really care if arsenal lose in on him, i hope it encourages wenger to buy a proper striker with clout..

I bet the other team is tottenham every player arsenal is interested in they seem to latch on to..samba is one for example.

well Domhuaille…. that doesn’t mean you should report a transfer target before its done does it?? just think before you say anything negatives to me. your comments does not make much sense to reply to mine. of course arsenal hav scouted this player for maybe months but how the hell is other clubs knowing which player we scout?????????? Maybe from sites like this!????? ever thought of that? If you say no then go fuck yourself cus its very very obvious. You take what you get to get the information right.
