Ghanaian-born midfield powerhouse Emmanuel Frimpong signed professional forms in the summer of 2009 after establishing himself as the Under 18′s lynch-pin during his three seasons in Academy football.
Moving to England aged 9, he was scouted playing for his local side Broadwater Farm. Following a short trial he joined the club and quickly became one the rising stars of a year group which included Sanchez Watt, Jack Wilshere and Cedric Evina. At just 15 he had already turned out for the Under 18′s but really made significant strides at that level during the 2007-2008 season.
5 goals from defensive midfield showed his prowess, with Emmanuel proving to be an expert on set-pieces. His free-kick taking exploits brought the majority of his strikes, but long range efforts also contributed to the total in a land mark season. ‘Manny’s’ performances led to a call up for the Reserves pre-season before joining the first-team for the friendly which Huddersfield Town.
Frimpong played the second half and impressed as the Gunners claimed the Herbert Chapman trophy. It set him up for an exciting 2008-2009 term. 25 appearances, 1 goal and two Cup’s proved just how exciting it would be. Playing alongside fellow defensive midfielder Francis Coquelin, Emmanuel dropped the attacking side to his game and the pair formed a formidable shield in front of the back four.
The starlet also took part in several Arsenal TV interviews – showing he was coming out of the shell he initially hid in as a scholar. International honours have also beckoned, and to date Emmanuel is a England Under 17 international with a handful of goals to his name.
The signing of professional forms will only aid his hopes of kicking on in the future.
