Sead Hajrovic

Arsenal completed the signing of 16-year-old defender Sead Hajrovic from Grasshopper Zürich in May 2009 for a fee of around £220,000.

Hajrovic was the surprise signing of the summer but arrived with a massive reputation gained with the prestigious Swiss club. Although born in Bosnia, Sead has represented Switzerland at Under 15, Under 16 and Under 17 levels, yet harbours ambitions to turn out for Bosnia and Herzegovina in the future. After growing up in the shadow of his brother Izet, who also played for Grasshoppers, the combative stopper exploded through the ranks to become one of the most exciting defenders in Europe.

On one of his regular scouting missions, Arsène Wenger’s trusted first-team coach, Boro Primorac – a fellow Bosnian – was informed of Hajrovic’s talents and orchestrated a deal after watching just a handful of his games for Grasshoppers’ Under 18 side. He made his first appearance for Arsenal during the 2009 Atalanta Cup, but an inexperienced squad failed to reach the knockout rounds.

Following a short holiday in his native Switzerland, he returned ahead of Arsenal’s pre-season. Wenger quickly moved to take a closer look at his latest acquisition and Sead played a prominent part in the opening week of training. Although he impressed, Steve Bould recalled the youngster as preparations were made for his debut campaign.

A quick, athletic and powerful central defender, Hajrovic is also versatile and can play all over the back four with ease. Noted for his physical and all action approach, his competitive style will no doubt suit Academy League football.
