Norwegian-born Republic of Ireland International Sean McDermott signed for Arsenal from Kristiansand minnows IK Våg in November 2008, but didn’t complete his move to the club until June 2009.
The highly rated goalkeeper signed scholarship forms after impressing during two trials. Liam Brady was alerted to his talents after spotting him turning out for Ireland who he represents due to his father’s origins. After trials with Falkirk, Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham, he travelled with the Under 16′s to Italy to take part in the Atalanta Cup. He switched with Charlie Mann on occasions but was handed the chance to impress in the final against Juventus. He saved a penalty and then scored one to send the trophy back to North London.
The Gunners were keen to a seal a deal but his father, Terry, was keen for his son to continue with his school work before leaving. Sean, who is a Leeds United fan, came on another trial and was shown around the Emirates before turning down a move to Manchester United to sign with Arsenal. During the time before he could complete his switch, Våg promoted him to their second choice ‘keeper and handed him the number 13 shirt. He was also given a personal coach to work with his rapid rate of development.
A fee of an initial £100,000 leading to £600,000 based on appearances for the first team changed hands and McDermott described the move as ‘really great’. He’s been capped at Under 16 and Under 17 level for Ireland and being based in the UK is certain to propel him right into the spotlight of the Republic’s coaching staff. Sean will be the number one for the Under 18′s in the first season with the club, yet he stressed that he wants to be Arsène Wenger’s first choice when he turns 20.
The future looks very bright for young Sean McDermott.
