Arsenal Defender Rene Steer Fails Trail With Cheltenham

Relegation threatened League One outfit Cheltenham Town have decided against signing Arsenal Reserves left back Rene Steer following a trial last week, with the Luton born youngster making up the numbers on the bench at Underhill last night.

Steer is among four players who have been told they have no futures with the Club, yet Head Of Youth Development officer Liam Brady arranged him the chance of employment with Cheltenham last week. Rene completed 90 minutes during a Reserves game at Bristol City, but failed to impress new manager Martin Allen.

Allen has already bolstered his squad with the loan signings of Lewis Montrose (Wigan) and Josh Payne (West Ham), but handed a run out to the 18-year-old, along with former Leicester City defender Darren Kenton.

The more experienced Kenton has proved his fitness and signed a contract with The Robins, leaving the once promising Steer in the wilderness. Since his time with the Gunners, Armand Traoré, Kieran Gibbs and Pedro Botelho have all jumped ahead in the pecking order, with Under 18’s regular Thomas Cruise the latest prospect to overtake the starlet who featured for the first team over pre-season.

Close friends James Dunne, Abu Ogogo and Paul Rodgers are all at Nottingham Forest trying to earn a contract, they are expected to learn their fate by the end of the week.

A lack of bodies meant Rene was a surprise call up for Neil Banfield’s side last night, summed up by the fact he didn’t even warm up once. It’s unknown how long he will remain on the payroll with Arsenal, although plenty of Club’s are certain to be keen on a young Gunner.

Unfortunately, these things happen, and are definately amplified with regards to Arsenal’s youth system. Hopefully he will find a professional contract, good luck to Rene, he’ll make some team happy.

J, Do you know why Rhys Murphy wasn’t involved in either the u18s or reserves?

I think rene will defo make it at a pro club. It seems strange that it says on here that he didn’t impress cause i saw last week in an article about their reserve game last week that rene really impressed the manager.

I agree phader, he must feel rotten at the moment, one second you’re at Arsenal the next you fail to impress at Cheltenham. How poor do you have to be to fail to impress there? I wish him all the best , hope someone takes a chance on him.

Caps aside i agree with TopGunna. Dont forget Steer is a defender that relies on his pace and technique in his attempt to be an affective and valuable player. If Cheltenham are looking for a play whos a little more physically robust then that would explain why they turned him down.

Personally having seen him play around 8 or 9 times he’ll be a championship and maybe even lower premiership (although he’ll really have to keep focused on improving to reach that level) in the future and i cnt see him failing to get a contract at a league club before he is released. Any league one side who play attacking football and value technique would be interested in him. I wouldent be suprised if Millwall might snap him up although im not sure they’re in the market for a left back.

Rhys Murphy is with the England U19 squad at the moment. They play in a UEFA competition between 8 – 13 October.

Just to confirm the 4 lads who missed out in the reserves (hoyte, lansbury, thomas and murphy) are all with England, Random point we will have 11 players on duty with England this week at various levels, u16, u17, u19, and senior. Not bad for a club that does not get behind the national team. Add to that the other 11 currently on the books at scholar or above who have also represented their country!!
