Brazilian's Conte & Wellington Start Arsenal Trials

Brazilian youngsters Luis Gustavo Conte and Wellington flew into North London yesterday morning ahead of their 14 day trials with Arsenal – which begun this morning.

Conte (14) and Wellington (15) were both scouted by reliable informant Sandro Orlandelli, who has extensive contacts in South America. Orlandelli was responsible for the signings of both Denilson and Pedro Botelho, and looks to have come up the goods yet again. Conte is an elegant and composed central midfielder, who currently ply’s his trade with São Paulo minnows Mirassol, who surprisingly offered the services of the prospect to the Gunners.

Sources in Europe suggest he is all but certain to be handed a contract, with a small amount of compensation changing hands. The other player, Wellington, is on the books of Rio based outfit Fluminense. He’s a powerful and strong winger who can operate on either flank, and has already drawn comparisons with Ryan Babel for his direct, pacy style. Wellington shot to fame during this years Nike Cup tournament in Manchester, where his star performances helped Fluminense walk away with the trophy.

Both his family and agent are keen to complete a switch shortly, to the anger of his current employers. Wellington is close friends with Man Utd duo Fabio and Rafael da Silva, but despite having the option to join them in the North of England, Arsenal have first priority on any sale. The agreement entails that following the successful completion of a 14 day trial; the Gunners can sign the player on a pre-contract. The winger would move to London on his 16th Birthday, on January 6th.

Good news though am I right in thinking they can’t play at the club until they are 18 and/or leave Brazil? Just need a few clarifications but good work J.

Fascinating stuff. Visas apart, with Wenger’s youth policy they’re only 2 years away from a first team start! LOL.

I’m all for Wenger’s policy of snapping up top youth, although we haven’t yet seen the full success of it. Clichy and Cesc have come through, but Vela, Bendtner, Wilshere and Ramsey are still works in progress.

I’m sure Wenger is keeping an eye on the homegrown rule as well.

Mirassol, nice! I lived about 20 minutes away from there. It’s 6 hours bus journey from the city of Sao Paulo, right at the top of Sao Paulo state. Doriva, who recently played for Middlesborough, started his career there.

That’s right, like Fabio and Rafael, they can’t joined until they’re 18., not sure why Jay says 16, because that’s not the case anymore.

News direct from the Mirassol FC site.

Basically it states that the club are not allowed to sell the player at this young age but could sign an agreement to help develop the player with Arsenal having the rights to sign him when he’s old enough.

The player himself seems very level headed. Talking about realising he’s still learning the game and wanting to try hard during his 10 days trial at Arsenal.

Yeah, whats with the 16 thing? I thought Brazilian youngsters weren’t allowed to play for teams outside the continent (except Portugal for obv. reasons) until 18. And presumably, unless they are likely to be early starters in the national team, they’d have to Salamanca it first right?

Maybe they can move over there and play for the Academy but not play for the reserves or first team till they’re 18. I don’t know much about it though.

Great link, Paul. The thing is, the Mirassol site says he’s a defender, not a midfielder. Maybe converting him to DM, but on the site they call him ‘zagueiro’, or central defender.

If this scout recommended Denilson, then there must be question marks over his ability to recognise a good player !!

I think Denilson was accidentally found by Wenger while he was in a Brazil scouting trip. I read somewhere that Wenger requested for some football videos of some prospects (not Denilson though) in Brazil from Sandro in order to kill time in the hotel. While running through some videos, Wenger found Denilson.

Denilson’s season (as stolen from gunnerblog) as the best god damn player in the premiership this season:

Two goals this season – that’s double Cesc’s tally
Four assists – which is behind only Malbranque, Berbatov, Malouda and Arteta
11th most fouled player in the entire league, winning plenty of free-kicks
45 tackles won – 7th highest in the league – higher than Butt, Clichy, Diarra, Kompany, Reo-Coker, Barry et al
991 passes attempted – behind only Lampard and Mikel
849 completed passes, behind only Mikel

Why would it be good for us to get a 14 year old Brazilian? It would hurt the confidence of our English youngsters, and it is also a needless gamble. What if actually we focussed on signing players who are finished articles?

i agree with r…denilson is the type of brazilian u DONT want!!! we shud stop buying young centre mids…we still need an experienced 1!!!! the winger sounds more promising 2 me cos ive always wanted arsenal 2 buy a flair brazilian rather then the battlers like denilson/gilberto/baptista(not sure what he actually was 2 be honest!!!ha)

i think the 18 rule is why we don’t sign many brazilians as by the time there 18 all the major clubs are aware of them which makes the transfer fee higher which we arent willing to pay.

while I know these two guys ARE coming on loan… its impossible for them to already be in London when they were in the USA today playing against the US u17 team….

Wellington and Conde just played today (and Friday) for Brazil’s u17s against the US… both were very good… Conte was the captain and is a right back…

so its a bit difficult for them to be in the US right now while trialing at Arsenal ;)

I think they both are scheduled to land in London tomorrow or Tuesday

It’s obvious that the deal with Conde is simply a case of Arsenal getting the rights to the play should he develop by 18 to a stage where Arsenal might want to sign him.
