Derby Want Barazite, West Brom Don't Want Steer

Derby manager Paul Jewell has confirmed his intention to retain the services of Dutch winger Nacer Barazite, after the 18-year-old created yesterdays winner from the substitutes bench.

Barazite has been in and out of the Rams starting XI since his switch in August, but he has already chalked up a handful of crucial assists – including a fine cross for Rob Hulse to bag the match winner against fellow strugglers Watford on Saturday afternoon.

Naz’s form has seen him become a huge favourite during his tenure at Pride Park, with the fans often his awe of his technical abilities. However, his tender age has seen Jewell a little reluctant to call on Nacer’s services, but whenever he has, it’s always been to Derby’s profit.

Jewell has now admitted his desire to keep the winger until the end of the campaign, but with injuries to Theo Walcott and Samir Nasri in recent weeks, Arsène Wenger is said to have earmarked the Holland Under 19 international for an early return.

“We would like to keep him until the end of the season but I’m not sure at the moment. We have spoken a couple of times to Arsenal so we’ll just have to wait and see.”

The loan contract expires at midnight on December 31st, and with the restrictions that Arsenal have put in his contract, it seems likely Barazite will return to the Emirates in a first team capacity in the New Year.

In other news, Reserves left back Rene Steer has failed to win a contract at Premiership rivals West Bromwich Albion.

West Brom are the second team in as many months to rebuff the tenacious full back, after Cheltenham Town followed the same path in late November. It didn’t seem to bother Steer however, as he was spotted in several London nightclubs over the weekend.

I think it’d be better for him to stay because he’s not gonna get many games here, especially because Wenger seems to prefer playing the likes of Diaby and Denilson on the wing instead of playing youngsters such as Wilshere. I suppose he could play in the FA cup but why not just leave him to try and become a regular starter and improve his game by playing professional football consitently?

Is Steer’s career over before it’s begun? Doesn’t get much worse than being rejected by Cheltenham….

what standard do you see steer making it at. I have not seen to much of him but he seems like he would make a good attacking fullback in time.

From the reserve game, Steer should decent at Championship and League One level, but he may not be able yet to handle a full season as first XI full back.
I also suspect that he may not have the discipline on and off the pitch. Yes he is on holiday until beginning of January, but he may need to be in top form in January and avoid nasty injury to bag a contract, because he is unlikely to be offered one at Arsenal.
Partying until early in the morning as have been reported is unlikely to help him making the right headlines.

Football can be strange. Being an Arsenal player it seems many teams will like to have Steer but that is not seemingly the case. Maybe it is his professionalism, his defensive ability. If he brushes up on the latter, sure he can make it maybe Championship at least.
