Simpson Close To Agreeing New Arsenal Contract

Arsenal are holding contract negotiations with striker Jay Simpson after his exploits in the Carling Cup prompted Arsène Wenger to secure the starlets services for the next campaign.

Simpson, who turns 20 two days after Christmas, would be free to talk to interested clubs in January, as he is in the final year of his deal. However, after bagging a brace on his first start against Wigan, the manager was suitably impressed with the Tottenham born youngster’s capability to perform at the top level. Jay also showed his versatility by featuring as a winger in the closing stages away to Burnley last night.

It’s been a rocky road to the Arsenal first team, but it seems the fans favourite is now winning the battle to forge a career with his childhood club. Many believe Simpson should be given the opportunity in the Premiership to show his class, but several sources in the English media suggest he will spend 3 months on loan in the Championship cutting his teeth as a striker.

Norwich, Nottingham Forest and Reading are the teams being mentioned, but top level experience with a club like Portsmouth could be more beneficial. The length of the contract is unknown, but 2-4 years is the usual baseline.

Good for him. I really hope he will make it. If that means going on loan for two seasons, then be it. Seems like he is a late developer, but he has the physical attributes to make it. He really is ripped. A season in the championship will do him good.

Up until last night I thought Simpson was close to being sacrificed but with Bendtner looking awful and frankly not bothered I think Arsene may think that Jay is a better alternative to have on the bench.

it would be great for him to get some EPL experience under his belt. He doesn’t have nearly the same talent as lets say Barazite, but he is a real fighter and I would be pleased to see him fight for his place. Like I said in the last post, perhaps we could get rid of Eboue and use Simpson for the same purpose.

I think it was a bit naughty for Wenger to have left Simpson out last night. Bendtner has had quite a few opportunities already and his confidence was low already. Frankly I am amazed that Simpson wants to carry on at Arsenal because he is 20 already (in two weeks), there are not many reserve games and I would have thought he has not had that much encouragement about a future. eg not even a substitute. Mind you, to get a 2-4 year contract could be considered a wise move in these credit crunch days.

Delighted to hear that there is potentially an extended deal for Simpson. Keown said on BBC that he didnt rate Simpson when he coached a few years back and is surprised at the progress he has made. Hopefully he will be given the same amount of time and patience that Bendtner has been given to date to prove himself.
J off young gunners topic but is there any news on Eduardo’s progress?

I think it’s high time he got a real chance, and i mean ahead of niklas in the pecking order. He’s a gunner at heart, got desire, pace, makes great runs and is a good finisher, half of the qualities Bendtner simply doesn’t posess.

I actually believe Bendtner will be on his way come Jan or Summer. Wenger didn’t seem to impressed last night. What you think J.

    great news, love the guy
ppl say hes not a typical arsenal player, but im not sure,
he links up well etc, is bloody fast and his finishing looks pretty good to me
the only “non-arsenal” things about him are that his 1st touch isnt always great, and seemingly that hes extremely powerful and hassles defenders a lot
apart from the first touch issue, i dont think i mind those “non-arsenal” qualities

If this new contract proves to be true, although it may be just to get a higher transfer value.
A shame he didn’t start last night as Nik has had many chances this season, whereas Jay has only had 2 chances.

Everton are without Yakubu, James Vaughan and possibly Louis Saha for a while. If Jay did a spell there, it would be good for both parties.

Go Jay, On another note what do you think about 3-4 players going to the USA on loan to the Colorado Rapids MLS? Players like Rodgers, etc??? and is there any Americans on Arsenal radar? Please leave NB alone just a unlucky night we all have them! Also doesn’t Arsenal have a feeder club in Ivory Coast I’ve watch Ivory Coast in alot of competitions and there is slew of players AFC could use in defense and striker position?

World Peace Please!!! Matt & Maeve in Delmar NY USA

phillip, simpson is better than bendtner, and in my view will most definately be a million x better than adebayor soon enough, so he’s the 3rd most talented striker in our squad behind van persie and vela. cut our losses? ur mad mate only for him to bang in goals for man utd later in his career???

“Phillip” He may not be the most technical player he has come through the ranks while many in similiar postions failed and dropped off , he went on loan to millwall and still manage to shine , on his first team debut scores 2 goals against a prem side wt more does a young player have to do , to gain some credit and respect

Simpson can make it and is improving all the time. I think he can play on the right now as Denilson can’t do much in that position because he lacks pace.

Simpson can play on the right with Theo. He has pace, can tackle and very direct. He just needs to work on his link up play and touch; a problem both Ade and Bendtner still have.

He fights hard for the club of his heart. Surely it won’t hurt to extend his contract, I mean if the likes of Denilson can play for Arsenal, why not this guy?

Jay could just be a late developer like Ian Wright. If he is willing to be patient a little longer, work hard and fight for a place, I say good luck to him. Arsene is obviously pleased with how much he has improved following the season with Millwall, so it looks like he is willing to keep him a bit longer and perhaps try a loan spell with a championship team.

Some people seem to have a very unrealistic idea about players hitting their peak when they are barely out of their teens. Our 3 main strikers are in their mid-20’s in case you hadn’t noticed.

Meanwhile Jay Simpson, the 20-year-old Arsenal striker who scored twice on his debut in the tie against Wigan, is close to agreeing a new three-year contract with the club. The Londoner is seen by Wenger as having a future at the Emirates Stadium and Derby County and West Bromwich Albion have shown an interest in taking him on loan.

I’d be feeling good if I was Jay. If his main weakness is his technique, all he has to do is practice. All day. Everyday. And where better then alongside the most technically honed players in the Premiership. He can only improve.

    Walcott – Simpson

Both prodigys when young , Simpson was even relocated as arsenal wanted him to focus on football , Walcott has obviously out shone Simpson but hes had first team football , and trained with some of the best players in the world his quality and confidence is bound to be better , just need to give simpson the same surroundings and see if he reacts
