After manager Arsène Wenger refused to sanction the loan of Mexico International Carlos Vela, Hull City, Wigan Athletic and West Bromwich Albion have changed targets, and will now go head-to-head to sign versatile forward Jay Simpson.
Simpson is now the new target for the Premiership trio who have all been rocked with problems to their usual front-men. Hull marksman Marlon King has been in and out of trouble with the police this campaign, although he very much remains a favourite with the Humberside fans.
West Brom’s Ishmael Miller sustained cruciate knee ligament damage during Sunday’s draw with Armand Traorè’s Portsmouth, but manager Tony Mowbray was already on the look out for a new forward in January anyway. However, that chase has now been significantly stepped up.
Wigan – who were the victims of Simpson’s talents during the Carling Cup clash at the Emirates in November – have fitness and contract doubts over Emile Heskey, Henri Camara and Amr Zaki. Steve Bruce will hope that the good relationship he has with Wenger can tip the balance.
Jay turns 20 shortly after Christmas, but only has one professional start to his name with Arsenal. His form over pre-season was promising after a season long loan with Millwall, where he won the League One Player Of The Year award, operating in an unfamiliar right wing role.
Arsène will be sure to stress to all three interested parties that any deal would be for the short term, and would come after Simpson puts pen-to-paper on a new and improved contract.
Negotiations on the deal are believed to be in the closing stages, and with inpatient clubs waiting for an answer, Jay’s long term future should be settled shortly.

Simson should be tried on the right wing instead of Eboue or Denilson, he can’t be worse in any case than those two.
Its really strange that Simpson played right wing for Millwall and Vela Left wing for Ossasuna and both of them impressed greatly, but Wenger never tried them in these positions, even when Walcot, Rosicky and Nasri were injured!
The beautiful football have vanished from this Arsenal team, sadly Wenger is the reason.
I just don’t understand why is he so stubborn with the money thing, its like he is spending from his own pocket, and let us the fans suffer from this horror show that’s called Arsenal first team.
The silly thing is that the number of fans that are getting fed up are increasing rapidly, and Wenger is losing the patience from his loyal fans, and then a new manager will take the helm after him and spend all the money that he saved over the years.
Hull is a team riding high and boozin wid confidnce…..it will be a good xprnce for the boy…
I hope it’s Wigan personally. I think Bruce has shown in the past that he integrates loan signings well into his squad.
Simpson is a better player than bendter,so why not let bendter go on loan & keep simpson as cover in case one of strikers get injured!
i hope wenger will not allow simpson to leave, that’s arsenal’s new theo walcott. He’s a great player, infact i prefer him to Bendtner!
Hey J (Jamie?), I love your site, very informative on subjects that can’t be found anywhere else, however, If you’re planning to keep this snowing thing until the new year I suggest you rethink the issue, it’s very annoying when trying to read your good posts.
:)
J is there any truth in the edam hazard rumours. Man u seem to have beaten us to adem ljajic
I really think we need to get an out and out winger on board as playing central midfielders out wide make our play far to congested.
great to see the turnaround in Jay’s fortunes, I (like most people) thought he was going to the championship permanently in September
u summed it all up roy…
too be honest, i wont be suprised if arsene dosen’t spend in the january transfer window
Jay should of had a go on the right wing for us but I think a spell with Wigan or West Brom would be good as they are decent footballing sides and would create chances for him. He has a sort of Ian Wright style to him by getting in behind defenders to finish and knows where the goal is which is key. Wenger will buy players as Ivan Gazidis will be the man to negotiate these when he joins in January and thank god he has arrived to take the club forward. He is key to where Arsenal will be in the next 5 years. Expect signings to occur and hopefully Gazidis can be as good as Dein was for us.
Pessimistic gunners need to keep quiet and wait until we see what the vision is. I expect Bendtner, Gallas and Eboue to not be at Arsenal next season.
J, a great result for the youth cup side but how highly do you rate Frimpong and Coquelin and how good is Özyakup compared to Lansbury?
ARRRRGH. I can’t stand these people: “I have seen Bendtner not yet be ready for week in week out highest level football, so that guy who has played like once for us and did alright in the second division must be better!”
There is a very obvious reason Bendtner still starts and Simpson doesn’t. You really think Wenger looks at them in training and goes “Sure, Bendtner is worse but who can resist picking that Danish pink?”
BOTH of them need to go on loan imo when Eduardo returns. Bendtner is has enough PL/CL experience that he should go somewhere like Everton; Simpson somewhere like Wigan would be great.
Yes J? How do you rate Frimpong and Coke(Coquelin – my new nick name for him!)? how good is Özyakup compared to Lansbury?
‘inpatient fans’ you said JS !!!??? What ailment are they suffering from??
They are both very good prospects Kat, i prefer Coquelin over Frimpong though.
Özyakup is a pass master more like Fabregas, whereas Lansbury is more of a driving force like Gerrard
Young :_: GUNs
Thanks a lot J. Do Oozie and Lansbury have enough talent to make it into the first team? I guess Coquelin as you said is a top prospect. Thank you.
J, is there any truth in the Hazard and Cabaye rumours?
simpson is NOT better then bendtner!!!!…he is a championship striker simple as that…vela shud b put left wing 4 now just 4 his pace if not nething else…denilson is a seriously poor player 4 us and a big reason why we,re not too impressive in midfield this year
