Arsenal 3-1 Wolves – FA Youth Cup – Match Report

Gilles Sunu’s emphatic hat-trick proved the difference between Arsenal and Wolves this evening, as the Gunners cruised through to round 5 of the FA Youth Cup.

A nasty looking injury to Rhys Murphy handed Sunu his chance, and he took the baton and ran with it. But the early stages were rather even – that was until the Gunners settled and took charge.

Henri Lansbury, Emmanuel Frimpong and Murphy all had cracks, before the latter had his evening ended early. A rash challenge saw the Arsenal youth leading scorer in agony – it took several minutes before he was finally taken off the pitch.

Sunu’s impact was almost instant. Lansbury’s corner picked out the arriving Frenchman who crashed home the opener. The half time whistle came and went with more pressure, but further goals had eluded them.

Mistakes at the back showed that maybe Bould’s boys were wavering, until another Lansbury cross was finished well by Gilles. He went on to complete his hat-trick before Wolves pulled one back, but in truth there was only going to be one winner.

Arsenal roll on and will face Sunderland in the next round.

Shea – done alright but weak on crosses may be due to lack of height

Bartley – cumbersone & for his height was not great aerially and his agility dont look to great

Cruise – beaten too many times aerially & lost too many 50-50 duel. Timing of jump is off and needs to attack the ball better.

Eastmond – exact opposite to Cruise, improving and impressive

Ayling – MOTM for me, positioning, strong in aerial duels and 50-50s, organisation of the back 4, composed and excellent use of the ball. Best young defender in reserves or U18s period.

Lansbury – good discipline to help out Eastmond against rampaging LB of Wolves, decent combination play going forward and assist.

Coquelin – won the centre midfield battle decent going forward but even though his 1st touch was alright on the night, it could be better and the need for better ball manipulation

    Frimpong – same as Coquelin

J Thomas – was okay in patches but his “decision making” resembles that of Diaby despite both having wonderful footwork [dribbles when a pass should be made and passes when he should dribble or sometimes dribble into blind alley]

Wilshere – was very tightly marked by sometimes 2 players in the 1st half but still lost his marker sometimes to create for the team. More invovlement in the 2nd half and his brilliant imaginative flick released Lansbury on the half-way line to setup Sunu

Murphy – bright start until disaster struck. It could be fracture or ligament damage, i should have asked the paramedic, wish him a very very speedy recovery especially after previous diruption in his development caused by injuries.

    Subs

Sunu – bright, buzzing, hard working and took his 3 goals well especially his 2nd.

Watt – nice touches, okay, didnt have enough time to make an impact.

Special shout-out to Kyle Bennett whose 1st touch impressed me and decent movement

Conversely, i wish David Davis a very bad new year, his thuggery attitude almost ruined the match.

Finally, the goal that we conceded was from a set-play and bcuz we were playing zonal marking, i cant pick out the culprit from naked eye, need a tv replay.

I think we should keep Sunu yes, I’ve always been a fan of his, but a lot of readers here are a little undecided on him.

Did Wilshere get injured too? Some people here are suggesting so but according to arsenal.com he finished the game.
Best of wishes to Murphy, please get back soon and help us win the trophy.
Good news for the team though. It seems that Wilshere’s involvement opened up a lot of space for players like Lansbury. I just hope the kids don’t rely too much on him as he might very well not play in the next round. Today was a good time for him to play. He didn’t play over the weekend, next first team fixture isn’t for 4 days and the next reserves fixture not for 8 days. So it was probably more with the intention of letting Wilshere play some more rather than trying to force out a result.

Ah good, glad Wilshere wasnt injured. Must be really bad if it took them that long to stretcher Murphy off, just hoping its not a break.

So is Sunu leaving or not? Im sure i remember reading an article a while ago where u said he was almost definatly leaving… know any more about that?

Id be dissapinted if he left, on his day hes awesome and as he gets older and adapts to the english game those days seem to be getting a bit more frequent. Physically hes top notch, technically hes pretty damn good, only consistancy thats the problem and alot of young strikers suffer from that, but time and hard work can often sort it.

Found out that the Sunu reports were wrong. According to my source he was never planning on leaving.
