Arsenal 4-0 Sunderland – FA Youth Cup – Match Report

Steve Bould’s Arsenal youngsters breezed into the quarter-finals of the E.ON sponsored F.A Youth Cup this evening, after smashing an unfortunate Sunderland for four.

A duo of penalties from Henri Lansbury set the Gunners on their way, before Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and Benik Afobe sealed a fantastic win in the North.

Francis Coquelin passed a late fitness test, so Oguzhan Ozyakup had to make do with a place on the bench. Harry Lee came in for his Cup debut between the sticks, whilst Gilles Sunu replaced the injured Rhys Murphy in attack.

Starting XI

Lee
Eastmond – Bartley – Ayling – Cruise
Lansbury – Coquelin – Frimpong – Thomas
Wilshere
Sunu

Arsenal set about their task with spirit, energy and a will to win. The pressure was rewarded within 4 minutes when slick passing presented Gilles Sunu the opportunity to score, until Black Cats stopper Michal Misiewicz stopped the Frenchman in his tracks, and a penalty was given.

Henri Lansbury proved spot on from 12 yards – sending the unfortunate Misiewicz the wrong way. But not to be undone, Sunderland hit back working the Cup debutant Lee with a mini barrage of attacks.

Up the other end, Sunu was again put through, but this time Misiewicz opted to stay in his goal – and saved well to keep his side in the fixture. However, the Canadian stopper was having an evening from hell.

33 minutes after conceding his first spot kick, Lansbury had the opportunity to double his tally after being tripped in the area by Misiewicz. Henri dusted himself down, and made no mistake with another well placed effort.

At 2-0 Sunderland were rocking. Andrew Galer was dismissed for a terrible lunge at Craig Eastmond, and as the hosts lost their heads, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas thumped home number three in the 66th minute.

The icing was added to the Gunners’ cake on 79 minutes when Benik Afobe crashed home Emmanuel-Thomas’ cross from the left. It finished 4-0, Arsenal progress to the quarter-finals where a potential clash with Tottenham is being lined up.

The weakest team since your last nappy change. This squad wins the FAYC unless injuries or red cards intervene.

If you bothered to read what I actually said Robb you would not have shown yourself up.

“The Youth Cup is infamous for unearthing starlets, but on paper, the current crop of Gunners are the ‘weakest’ for a couple of years. However, they’re out to prove themselves, and a convincing romp against Wolves last time out showed the swagger and prowess of a side very capable of winning the competition.”

    KG – That’s correct yes.

Jay E-T, Wilshire, Sunu. Coquelin, Frimpong and bartley… They all look like they could go on to do well IMO.

Shit! That midfield would give our current one a run for its money!

youth teams have invariably at most a couple of future players. But in this team the defenders are at best average but midfield and upfront a cpuple of gems will emerge. you can NEVER guess- trust me i saw the some of the 1966 and all the 1971 YC winning team but if I were to do so – JET.

I remember when we got to the semi-finals, we played both the quarter- and the semi-finals on the Emirates. I think it was the first one where Simpson scored a hat trick.

Our midfield is definitely the best part about the team. Every one of those players have great potential and I seriously think that all of them will be playing regular EPL football within years. Five players and they are fantastic.
    How did Wilshere do?
And also, is Frimpong more highly rated at the Colney than Oguzhan? They are the same age, both youth internationals, play the same position. Frimpong looks a lot stronger so maybe that puts him ahead.

Well done to the boys.. This teams looking strong and if they keep pushing themselves theres no reason they can’t go on to win this!

Atleast six of that starting eleven have got enough potential to make it here!

Note he put weakest between inverted commers, implieing that it’s a debatable statement and not a fact or even his own opinion.

Great result, cant wait to see the highlights, really glad about the goal scorers, the more Afobe scores the more he’ll get games for the U18s and confidance in his ability (not that I’m saying he doesnt have confidance, but it’ll definatly give him a boost), Landsbury needs a bit of a boost and two goals will give him that even if they were from the spot… and Jay Thomas… well i just like him :D

How old is Benik JS? Im assuming hes 15 still as he hasnt played reserves football and hasnt been given a pro deal yet is that true? Do u no if Benik has trained with the first team much is he doing wat Jack did b4 he was 16? Sorry 4 all the Benik focused questions just seems like this guy could be a striking version of Wilshere (quality english arsenal academy produced talent) a reply to this would be much appreciated, keep up the good work as always

to be fair i think the defence and goal keeper has been the weakest for the last 2 years – but i think the midfield might be the best we’ve had – its looks more balanced

JS, can you collaborate your podcast with Gooner Talk and make it like a joint kind of thing?

First team news and Reserves? Or do you just want it dedicated to reserves?

Let me know via a GMAIL message or on msn etc.

    Cheers

J… is there going to be an article on Fonte joining Palace and even if there isnt do you know anything about it?

It’s slightly confusing seeing as technically we have him on loan until the end of this season and i didnt know you could loan out a loan player. Secondly what does him joining Palace meen, is it the club trying to find out how well he’ll cope with english football in view of his time appoaching an end with us to help them make a decsision and if so why only for 1 month? Why not 3?

@ T Magic, Laing came on as a substitute. Unlike the U18s league, older scholars or young pros tend the ones chosen to start in the youth cup unless they are extremely weak in a particular then might play 15 yr old with high potential.
