Arsenal Trial Győri's Hungarian Defender Tóth

Győri ETO FC defender Máté Tóth is heading to Arsenal this month to begin a 7 day trial with the Gunners ahead of a proposed switch before the February 2nd transfer deadline.

The 17-year-old Hungarian central defender is expected to spend his 18th birthday in London as he aims to win a contract with the club.

Despite his tender age, he’s already much travelled. Starting out with Budapest outfit Kerületi TTVE, he quickly moved on to Sheffield United’s link club Ferencváros and then made a surprise switch to their arch rivals Újpest. Máté’s talents then saw him transferred to Italian side Empoli, but he failed to settle and switched back to his home land in July with Győri.

At 187cm he is an imposing prospect but also blessed with all the qualities of a modern day defender. The Hungary under 19 International is a keen AC Milan supporter, and lists Rossoneri stalwart Alessandro Nesta as his idol. Tottenham are also said to be keen to have a look at Máté, but Steve Rowley has managed to broker a deal first.

Me! I am Hungarian and although I am not too proud of our football performance, there is at least one advantage of this poor form: we can rate every better match – and no matter that we win or lose. Our U-19 squad was 3rd last summer, and we have beat the big Portugal squad to play in Czech. I think Rowley is a great scout and we will see whether Máté will live with his chance or not.
And I think if he is good it will not cost too much – so we can afford an Arshavin – but I prefer a younger and cheaper player, like Afellay.

Current defenders need to have more in their locker. Even John Terry is very capable in passing. He needs to mobile; It’s no good being tall but have a lack of pace and poor on the ball. With Arsenal’s high line it’s a must. Arsenal can develop defensive talent and we will start to see that. It’s stupid of those to think that we cannot, even Upson wasn’t good enough (even though he is still a good player, not Arsenal class) and Wenger knows it.

People who complain on Young Guns about the lack of signings for the first team are just downright stupid. Wenger has forever signed youngsters AS WELL AS established first team players: For every Coquelin there is a Nasri, every Sunu an Eduardu etc.

The youngsters we sign do not effect first team policies until they are of an age and ability in which the boss thinks they are ready to breakthrough. If we look at Senderos and Djourou as the standard for centre backs – this kid won’t really start seeing the first team till about 22 if he makes it. That’s 5 years away and that is a period of time in which Senderos, Gallas, Silvestre and possibly Toure will be replaced and only then should we be contemplating whether this guy will have an impact at Arsenal.

People also seem to work on the understanding that we can only make one signing at a time. If this guy is on trial for a week, does that really mean we can’t have 1 person on the phone to Russia?

Now, most players who come to the club on trial don’t make it. And considering his age, he’ll most likely be training under Brady and not Wenger while he is here, so le boss won’t be too distracted wondering about a 17 year old centre back while he chases Arshavin – as the head of youth development I’m sure he can trust Chippy’s judgement.

But good luck to the lad and I hope he turns out to be a very good player in an Arsenal shirt. Considering I – and the majority of us – have no prior knowledge to the kids ability, I can’t pass judgement and will have to have faith in what our pretty good staff say.

I’ll never want Arsenal to stop looking for the best talent around Europe, no matter their age or price range. Some players we trial may not turn out as good as we hope, but considering our track record of youngsters bought, and coaching staff/facilities – I’ll never stop having faith in them, even if some do turn out a bit duff.

But ultimately, remember people: did signing Coquelin stop us signing Nasri this summer? No. So, calm down, make a cup of tea and be patient.

This could be a bigger signing than people realise. At the moment we have Nordtveit who looks like he could become a great centre back, and a couple of players who look like they may develope into decent centre backs, but Nordtveit is too much like Toure and Gallas, blessed with decent pace, skill on the ball, but not so great as the last man, almost sweeper tipe centre back. If this guy is fast, good in the air, and strong, in two years we could have the kind of defender we really need.

However its still worrying because thats in two years maybe more and not even a certainty, between now and whenever we dont have a solution, Silvertre is like a poor mans Gallas, Senderos probably wont be coming back and might not do much good if he did and Djourou and Song, despite having prooved they can cover that position certainly havent sold themselves as possible starters there yet.

It would be nice to see a centre back and defencive mid come in this transfer window and it might happen but so far all we’ve had is maybe Arshavin but probably not, and he cant fill either position anyway.

Tony: I can’t see what 5 of the Invincibles came through our system. Cole did and Toure and Vieira came here young and rather unknown but apart from that they were all bought for considerable sums (apart from the former Spud of course).

Maverik: I’m pretty certain Djourou is going to be an established part of our defence for the next 10 years mate. He’s only 21, imposing in the air, fast w/ a clean tackle and most importantly for a Wenger side – can pass like the midfielder he was originally trained to be. Bar the own goal at Chelsea, I can’t think of anything he’s done wrong since he made it into the first XI and considering his age, he is only going to get better.

Whoever our other centre back for the foreseeable future is depends on how suitable to play with Djourou they are, as far as I’m concerned. Especially considering Gallas/Silvestre/Toure are all in the mold of that player, and will be replaced as such…

Samuel, Djourou loses concentration far too much. I don’t care that he is only 21, he seems to lack the basics at times. Against Liverpool, he was standing a yard the rong side of Robbie Keane when the long ball came over. This is simple defending and should never have happened. Djourou worries me every time he plays, but lets hope that his concentration levels improve as he has other decent qualities to make it as a centre back. Lets hope Nordveit’s as decent as everyone reckons and gets his chance soon!

I hope your right about Djourou. I agree he shows alot of promise but im still not convinced about his consistancy which is what you really need when your a top 4 club. I cant think of any mistakes hes made either as i dont really consider the Chelsea own goal a mistake, just really unfortunate. Hes good but i duno if hes brilliant yet. There again, u could well be right and i really hope you are. Im not all that great at judging defencive players anyway, i thought Alex was guna be the biggest defender the world had seen for years and neva saw Flamini as a defencive mid until last season…so there you go, what do i know.

Confidant on the ball with a good pass and good at reading the game, but i havent seen him play or heard much about him for ages so i couldent really say for sure.

Stone I think you willfind these 5 were all part of the squad 2003/2004 I would consider they came through the youth ranks

Ashley Cole ,He started his career at his local club Arsenal as a teenager. He signed as a professional on 25 February 2000.

Martin Keown ,from Oxford, Keown played for local sides as a boy, before joining Arsenal on a schoolboy contract in 1980, though he made his professional debut on loan at Brighton & Hove Albion in 1984

    Ray Parlour
Parlour where he played for 14 years. Parlour joined Arsenal as a trainee in 1989, aged 16

Aliadière signed for Arsenal at the age of 16 and took part that season

Hoyte was with Arsenal from the age of nine years old. , he signed professional terms with Arsenal in May 2003
