Győr Director Reveals Latest On Arsenal Trialist Tóth

Győri ETO FC defender Máté Tóth recently completed a 7 day trial with Arsenal, and despite extensive coverage of his travel to North London in the Hungarian press, Managing Director Tibor Klement has slammed suggestions his player is set for an imminent transfer.

Young Guns was the first English source to reveal that centre back Tóth was on his way to London Colney for a trial, and in a statement on Győri’s official website, Klement was frustrated that the information was leaked.

“The players agent specifically requested that neither the supporters or media were informed of Máté’s trip to England. Győri FC kept to this request.”

The 18-year-old is thought of as a future star in the developing football country of Hungary. His talents have already seen him play for the likes of Kerületi TTVE, Ferencváros, Újpest, Empoli – and as of July 2008 – Győri.

It was Tóth’s performances for the Hungarian Under 19 side that attracted Arsenal’s attention, but despite a week passing since the completion of the trial, Klement says there has been no further contact between the club’s.

“A letter was received today – from Arsenal Football Club – where they expressed their thanks for having the opportunity to give the player a trial.”

“The letter went on to add that on day two Máté suffered an ankle injury and was unable to take part in further training. With this in mind, Máté returned to Hungary shortly afterwards.”

“Both club’s are not even close to sitting down and discussing any transfer. “

Although the Gunners are yet to firm up any interest with an offer, Máté will take heart from Francis Coquelin who still completed a switch to Arsenal despite having his trial ended prematurely by injury.

Seems to be highly rated but it can’t be good that theres been little contact since to re-schedule another trial! It’ll have to be his reputation alone to get him back to North London! Good to see that its been higlighted the need for defensive reinforcements though.. Keep up the good work!

Sorry, but “developing football nation”? Check your history- first team to beat England on home soil, with a revolutionary (for the time) style and formation- hardly developing…

Thanks very much guys – much appreciated.

Maybe he’s still injured so no point in having him back yet. But we’ll wait and see.

Might be a Senderos type; a lot of promise but flopping when given opportunities. Enough of their types.

There’s a risk signing any player, and there’s more of a risk when you sign young players as they dont all develop as well as hoped for. Thats a given, so thats why there needs to be a balance; signing/producing young players and signing proven quality. IMO

Yes, Hungary used to be a great football nation but I think JS was referring to the fact that they haven’t really been doing anything great for the last couple of decades. So by that he probably meant that they are again rising.

The more the merrier, as long as they are outstanding prospects. He will add to the competition that the likes of Miguel, Hoyte, Ayling, Nordveit and Bartley are already providing as potential future CB’s for the club.

Well if he got as far as a trial then arsenals scouting staff for the region of the world (who presumably were also involved in the Nordtveit deal and possibly Bendtner aswell although Denmark is a bit further south) will already know alot about him, will have filed several reports describing the player to the arsenal coaching staff including Wenger, and possibly even sent back a couple of videos.

So, if hes really that good he’ll still come, if he doesnt we can presume the coaching staff and Wenger werent ever all that sure about him.
