Vela & Mérida Linked With Portsmouth Loans

Arsenal duo Carlos Vela and Fran Mérida are being strongly linked with loan moves to Portsmouth as the transfer window hots up in it’s final few days.

19-year-old Vela has had precious little game time over the last few months, and was previously linked with switches to Hull City and West Brom. Carlos’ Arsenal colleagues have lauded his’ influence from the bench since Christmas, but the last 3 games have seen his steady run of minutes come to an end.

Our close friends at Carlos Vela News understand that Pompey boss Tony Adams will make contact with his former employers should Arsène Wenger land his top target Andrei Arshavin. The Mexican international would be offered the chance to follow Armand Traoré to the South Coast until the end of the season.

But Carlos isn’t the only young Gunner linked with a switch to Fratton Park – Spanish play-maker Fran Mérida is also interesting former skipper Tony Adams according to sources in both Spain and the UK.

Mérida’s growing reputation was enhanced this term as he turned out for the first-team during the Carling Cup run. Wenger has previously spoken about the need for patience with the former Barça starlet as he is a ‘late developer’, but a loan similar to the one he undertook last term would no doubt be beneficial.

The closing days of the transfer window are sure to see some movement involving the youngsters, with a selection of Reserves expected to leave on loan.

We’d be mad to loan out Vela. If any of RVP, Ade or Bendtner get injured, there’s no striking options (until Eduardo’s match fit). Vela’s a great option, and frankly, he’s good enough to be starting games for us. Right now Ade’s off the pace, and RVP and Bendtner doesn’t look like a great partnership.

why cant vela just get a good run out in our games instead of eboue and bendtner, he has real talent and good wit the ball at his feet, very good.
Wenger just wants to be psycho if he lets dis boy go on loan

NOOOO! Vela is our best left winger – and he isn’t even a winger. He must not be let go. he needs game with us, way better than Eboue.

At the moment Portsmouth cannot loan a further player from the English Premier League. The limit is two at any one time and they currently have Armand Traore (Arsenal) and Jermaine Pennant (Liverpool) on loan.

Remember Wenger called Mérida a ‘late develop physically’, not technically. I’d say he was far more advanced of any of our youngsters (apart from Jack), and a Premiership loan could do him some good, although I’d rather it be for a full season next year, just to keep him away for longer, allowing time to settle to the Premier League aswell as giving him more time to improve.

Vela though, I’m not so sure, depends on what Wenger sees Eduardo can do.

No way can we let Vela go. The only reason he hasn’t played in the last couple of games is because he isn’t fully fit because he was taken ill and removed from the subs bench against Cardiff or else I am pretty sure that he would’ve been introduced at some stage. I would imagine he will get some playing time in the replay, as well as the rest of the season. As for Fran Merida, well I think it would be more beneficial for him to go on loan to a Championship club to be honest. He will get more playing time, and the pace is not as fast, so he can develop more steadily and thoroughly. With Silvestre out for 3 more weeks, does anyone think there is any chance of recalling Traore from his loan? I am not sure if there is a clause saying that we can recall him. Do you know Sanderson??

i would say there should be no more loans for portsmouth. Traore has not been given the best of chances at the left back. what is the possibility that vela/merida would get chances ahead of belhadj and pennant. I would prefer loaning merida to westbrom as they would definately give chances to both simpson and merida as they have both played together for a long time.

Surprised by the Vela links and would be more surprised if it actually happens. It could do some good for Merida, I’d like to see how he performs given more chances in the Premiership.

Would be annoyed if Vela went on loan. Merida could do with more game time, Vela just needs the odd game here and there for Arsenal. no more loans for him. Our squad is thin as it is!

Wrote a blog post on a game from the past. Thought I’d do something different by reviewing a classic game. Hope you enjoy the read as I enjoyed your post. Would be interesting to see your comments on it.

    Keep up the good work!

Like previously said – only 2 Premier League loans and Pompey have already used them – Jermaine Pendant and Armband Traore.

Shame would love to see both at Fratton.

why don’t you loan them denilson and eboue instead.
i think wenger is making fun of us the funs.every time i watch the first team i grow sick.frankly speaking even arshvin came i doubt that would make a difference.there are four players that are not fit for the arsenal style.
last time i watched a few highlights of the reserve game against stoke and i remembered why i became an arsenal supporter in the first place.
am serious done watching the first team i will watch the highlight only and only if RVP or nasri score.otherwise am tired tired and tired.

Wenger has a gifted footballer in vela and he is currently working with his thinnest list of players probably since he joined as manager.

Vela has shown why he deserves to be included in the starting lineup..at least at left midfield..But wenger opts for nasri on the left ..not his rightful position and Song out of all players who game in game out has only proven he isnt good enough for the big league..yet wenger opts for song in the middle and sometimes eboue.. totally useless hacks both of them

ARSENE WAKEUP !!! SONG & EBOUE CANT PLAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Loaning both out makes sense for us. Both need regular game time and they won’t be getting it here, especially if we sign Arshavin.

Would much rather start Vela than Ade at the moment. Now the big African has “made it” with his fat contract, his workrate has disappeared completely. And let’s face it, that’s really all he had. It was never his finishing was it.

Too many lazy players, Song, Diaby, Eboue. No wonder we’re right in the toilet

It would do Merida the world of good to get some first team football especially at Premiership level. I don’t think he’ll struggle so aslong as they give him a chance and he avoids serious injury it can only be beneficial to his development since realistically hes not going to get that much playing time for us, this season atleast.

As for Vela, no way, we need him, he can play 4 different attacking positions, should be getting more time than he is in my opinion, and while going to Portsmouth might end up being good for him, it wont do us any good.

It’s possible. Adams’ interview the other day he spoke about bringing in players who could “hit the ground running” and were up to speed with the league…. hence the reason they didn’t chase Saviola any longer. Losing Defoe means they do need someone up front to play off Crouch/Kanu.

Not sure Merida will be going. I personally think he’d be better off at League 1/The Championship at this stage.

Traore has had a fair few games for Pompey, far more than he would at Arsenal anyway. They have mainly been wide, but he’s got Domestic cup and league experience as well as European experience this season for Pompey which I think will stand him in good stead for next season and his return. Just because he’s with them, doesn’t give him a divine right to be chosen ahead of anyone else or above anyone else. If he doesn’t perform he doesn’t get picked.

On one hand I think we would we mad to let Vela go as he should be starting with us. On the other hand I think he could really do with some playing time as Wenger isn’t playing him nearly enough. Carlos would walk into the Pompey team and would be a great replacement for Defoe. Crouch and Kanu together are about as effective as Almunia would be up front. What I want is Vela to stay here and get the starting place he so clearly deserves. Adebayor has been so awful at time, he had a good day against Hull though. Vela and RvP just look like such a great partnership. Btw. on that subject. I think many look at Nick and Ade as the same kind of player. My view is that Ade, Vela and Walcott are the same kind, the one on top who runs after the ball and tries to get in behind the defence. Nick and van Persei, on the other hand, are both supporting strikers. They get the ball deeper, turn and either run with it or play it. Eduardo is a bit of a hybrid in my opinion. As he played with Ade, he was surely the second striker.

Anyway. My idea would be to loan Merida and Lansbury to WBA. They could form a partnership stronger than that piece of shit midfield they got. There strikers are okay as well as the wingers and Carson is decent. The defence is like headless chickens and their midfielders are shite. I honestly think that WBA would improve by playin Henry and Fran there.

If we get Arshavin, both of these players going on loan would be understandable. Vela would be guaranteed regular first team football in the Premiership that he’s not going to be anywhere near to considering Eduardo is nearly fit. However, Merida going to Pompy seems mental. They just got 2 CMs! And Traore is already got LM tied up. Honestly, I think Fulham would be the perfect team for him – it’s not far away and he could fill the Bullard role perfectly.
