Video – Arsenal Kid Rasmussen Shows His Skills

He’s one of Arsenal’s lesser known talents, but without doubt midfielder Jonas Rasmussen is one of the most technically gifted prospects at the club.

The 17-year-old signed a three year professional contract before the start of the season, but is currently struggling for fitness. However, 2009 should see him push on in Steve Bould’s Under 18’s, with the eventual goal being a place in the Reserves.

To get a taster of what Jonas is all about, friend of the blog ‘DKGooner’ sent us the following video of the Dane strutting his stuff. Enjoy!

Well lets be honest, a majority of footballers can do those tricks its become the norm, if you want to see true skill then watch jeremy lynch, he was on our books a few years ago but got released and has plyed his trade with his freestyles alone.

And is it just me or does he look very uncomfortable with the ball, almost an unatural footballer, too lanky, crouch style.

Having said that ive yet to see him play so I hope he proves me wrong.

Is it me or does it make much more sense in training to have a goal mouth broken up into two thin strips just inside where the posts are which are the actual goal and the rest doesn’t count as a goal. This way players will be forced to improve their accuracy and keep their shooting firmly aimed right just inside the post which is naturally the hardest place to save. I really resent it when you see players (we have plenty) who can’t bend it into the far corner anything like often enough and their shots are often far too central and easy to save (Ade, Theo and Niklas, I’m looking at you). ALl of them take their chances nicely sometimes, but I really think we have far too many tame shots from these three. It really needs working on. Also training with both feet, I’m sick of players earning £20+k a week looking so unpractised on their weaker foot. It’s not acceptable, it’s just lazy. They can seriously do with taking a leaf out of Robin’s book and training with the aim of always improving in every way, rather than sitting in the comfort zone.

Stu- Like your idea. To be fair to Ade he was a midfielder at first and the way he shoots now is similar to Henry and is still learning to place the ball in the corner. The same could be said of Theo. Bendtner is great in the air, very aggressive but his ground work needs more work. I think his control and decision making is more of a problem.

yeah i see your points. well however it gets done i think there has to be a major incentive to hit those designated corner areas, especially the bottom corners. when it comes down to it most goals don’t require brilliant placement, it just frustrates me no end when we don’t put it in the difficult places to save. we were spoilt with henry, pires and bergkamp i know, but i can’t help but feel some decent training would massively help overcome the problem. i don’t expect any of those players got so good at their placement naturally. all of them probably trained their finishing tirelessly to become so effective. cesc is one of the guiltiest culprits for a lot of tame shots. sometimes from range he hits them really sweetly, but all too often, especially inside the box, his finishes are slow and sort of bobble towards goal (whether they go in or not).

a lot of fuss was made about nasri’s nice goal at the weekend on his left. personally i think whilst it was certainly a good finish, it shouldn’t need to be so worthy of note when someone finishes a clear one on one in masses of space from pretty close range. i’m not saying i’d always expect him to score it exactly as he did, but you’d really think scoring from there as an attacking player when you earn what £30+k a week shouldn’t be especially noteworthy. if our players struggled with complex situations which required a fast volley from a strange bounce or something then yeah, it’s not so easy to train that. but really top level attacking players should be able to do this sort of thing pretty regularly without too much fuss. the fact that so many can’t leads me to question whether or not the training methods are that good, or simply how hard the players even try to master it.

rvp is one of the few players who always looks like he’s trying to get better in every way. his ability to turn into dangerous situations out of nothing and some of his finishing on either foot is an example to everyone of what happens if you really make the effort.

there was a situation vs hull when ade had a great chance to cross low and fast across the goal with his left. he instead turned onto his right, delayed it and played the pass which lead to eboue’s miss. whilst in the end his product had still set up a great scoring chance, i couldn’t help but feel that he’d only turned because he was scared or didn’t have faith in his ability to cross it reasonably well with his left. i might be wrong, but it wouldn’t exactly be thew first time. i just see that when we desperately need a winning goal and think ‘come on you get paid HOW much to be incompetent with your weaker foot?!’ i don’t expect him to score stunners or play inch perfect long balls with his left, but seriously, he should be able to put in a halfway decent cross with his left of such a simple nature a good 3/5 times. it didn’t require any real technique, just a bit of power and enough accuracy to put it inbetween the defense and the keeper, hardly anything majorly tough.

sorry for sounding so negative, and for being off topic of the article (i only thought of it after seeing the goals they use in training) but sometimes i wonder if professional footballers really train at the important simple things much at all. our defensive play is proof of that. all our defends can play nicely with the ball and yet when it comes to defending they are often out of position, don’t mark properly and don’t attack the ball. this should be what they’re training, not how to skin 10 players and pass to someone else.

Stu: Nasri’s goal was so beautiful because of his control on one foot and then his effortless strike with his ‘weaker’. I do agree with you, but that was a sweet fucking goal – the build up play (old Arsenal-esque even) contributed too though.

A players 17th birthday is when they sign their first pro-contracts – I don’t think that makes him stand out above the rest. That’s more of a ‘would like to see more, maybe how he does in the reserves’ contract. Only Wilshere’s at 17 stood out because of the big, irregular sum to fend off stern interest from every big club going.

Well if he doesnt then he’ll sign a perminent deal with some1 else because although hes not the worst player we’ve produced in the last couple of years hes definatly not good enough for us.

From what i remember of Rassmussen, although ive only seen highlights of one, maybe two games he played last season for the u18s, hes not pacey but good on the ball and a nice pass, looked more like a box to box mid to me. Hes got a wicked kick-up skills thou…shame that wont help on the pitch much.

dudu missed an absolute sitter – one on one with the goalie from an angle, decent save but he’ll score those 10 times out of 10 in a couple of weeks. otherwise looks sharp.

have to add – randall has got to be let go in the summer, his attitude and body language stink, and he’s made some howlers tonight, not least just casually letting a stoke player into the penalty area a few minutes ago, you’d never have thought this guy had played in the championship, but thats where he’s going in a few months..

I can’t see how either Randall or Lansbury are going to make it at Arsenal. Lansbury is lumbering and Randall decision making is very poor. Merida, Ramsey and Coquelin are just a class above both these players. Banfield should give JET and Frimpong their chance and let ship both Randall and Lansbury to the championship.

wilshere was quiet in the first half but after his goal sparang to life, merida if you make a run this boy will find you amazing passing ability, coquelin was his usual energetic self down the right until he got injured, tom cruise was quite impressive at right back. Lansbury didnt look interested, randall was shocking he really needs to up his game if he wants to make it here.

special mention to eduardo who worked hard the whole 90 minutes, some neat flicks and runs and maybe should of buried one. also had a goal ruled out for offside from a lovely (yes you guessed it) merida pass.

Bishoff looks like a poor mans Iniesta, bit less pace, bit less talent but the same style (even looks a bit like him). He might get better with more games thou…i meen he aint played for regulaly since he was 18.

Randall has started to piss me off, ive noticed a change in his game since the summer friendlies, he used to play a kind of Xabi Alonso role, pinging passes around the pitch, getting into good positions and nicking the ball off other mids (staying on his feat), now he always looks pissed off and vicious with it.
Landsbury has a nice touch and i recon he’ll be much better off in the middle where he wont need his pace as much.

Coquelin and Wilshire ran the game tonight, dudu looked ok, cant expect too much yet, Fonte was good when he came on and I love watched Jay Thomas… he didnt even play that well tonight but hes just so entertaining.

agree with most of what johnny said – bischoff has played a fair few games now though, and yesterday he really didn’t do anything of note – if he is on a 1 yr contract, he really needs to pull out the stops over the next few months. he’s nowhere near the 1st team yet thats for sure.

randall i’ve already spoken about – its so obvious with the talent we have that he’s got no chance of making it here, so it puzzles me why he is persisted with in CM when lansbury, who is so much more of a prospect and has a decent chance of making it here, doesn’t get a look in in his favoured position. the way he’s played there for england shows what a talent he is in that role.

being an old geezer, for once i cannot wait to get older – the sooner i am the sooner i get to see wilshere grown up and playing in the 1st team – been watching/interested in the reserves ever since we had the likes of quincy, cesc etc playing, and i have never seen anyone quite like him – even cesc didn’t excite the way this boy does, even though you knew he was some talent. jack just seems to take everything in his stride, scoring a wonder goal when his team needs it, even though he’s played so little competitive football over the last few weeks due to being with the 1st team. he IS going to be a world class player, of that i now have no doubt, maybe even player to be ranked with the best in the world, and to know he’ll have come through the ranks makes me smile every time i think about it!

and lastly, JET did absolutely nothing wrong last night, and considering how old he is, is starting to make me think he could definitely be a 1st team player. what with jack, coquelin, JET, maybe lansbury, merida and possibly a couple of others, it really does bode well for our future.

    feeing very positive today!!

Well at Derby hes been playing as a winger but he can fill either wing (better on the left) and as a second striker and Jay Simpson can also play on either wing (better on the right in my opinion) and as a second and first striker, so because of his versatility he could still get his chance. Plus is hes good enough which he lookes like he is Wenger will give him his chance and if he shines he’ll make it. Not to mention just becauese Simpson has made a good start as West Brom it doesnt meen he’ll keep it up… consistancy has always let him down a bit and if he cant put together a consistant run of good performances for the most part of the second half of the season i can still see him leaving us after a while (i doubt it’ll be this summer thou what with his new contract).

Plus dont forget Van Persie and Walcott are injury prone, and Dudu may well pick up injuries more often after the leg break (hopefully nothing as serious), so he could easily find himself serving as back-up to them for the next few seasons.

Oh btw…when i said Jay didnt play that well i meant by his own standards in that he didnt really do anything of note, but he still entertained with his trickery on the ball and impressed with his willingness to go looking for the ball and get stuck in… i didnt mean he actually had a bad game. Hes an awesome prospect since he can play in vertually any outfield position and has done for the U18s and Reserves, hes a leader on the pitch, hes consistant and the only thing that stands between him and the first team is the next couple of years of development. As long as he keeps improving and avoids serious injuries I’m pretty convinced he’ll make it. I hope he does anyway cuz i love watching him play.

Wilshere, Lansbury and Hoyte all named in the U-19 squad for next month’s friendly against Spain. No place there for Jay this time and not for Murphy either, probably due to his injuries. That means we will have five players playing for U-19 this season. Other notable players include Nathan Delfouneso of Aston Villa and Everton’s Jack Rodwell. If Wilshere and Lansbury play well they will certainly be pushing for a place in the summer’s U-21 European Championship.

not sure if anyone noticed but i thought Merida made some amazing passes through out the game….had dudu been up to his best, he could have scored 2-3 goals. What do u guys think of Merida? i feel that if we give this boy a chance in first team, he could be a star in future. A lot of ppl comment abt his size, but i remember when Cesc joined the first team, he wasn’t any bigger than merida is…..
We def need someone creative in the first team, if lets say Cesc is injured like now, and if Merida gets some chances, he will def get more confidence to show his skills.

Peter_afc: Afobe is more than a year younger than Wilshere and Jack is the youngest player in the squad and quite an achievement for him to be there. So Afobe might well be there 2 years from now, when he’s the same age as Delfouneso now. Regarding JET, I think this is the first squad of the season he isn’t in. He has usually been on as a substitute. At least he has gotten way more chances than Randall ever had.

    Where are Wilshere’s parents from?
Might sound an odd question but does anyone know much about them.

I thought we played good football yesterday. I just feel we lack wingers we keep playing centrally midfield players on the wing. It is annoying and if we had wingers we could actually destroy defences with our passing ability and finishing. We hae to sign rui fonte he is just like fernando torres

They want around 20mil for him which would make him our most expensive player ever… so im not sure its worth it, especially considering next season we’ll have pedro (i think) traore unless hes moved on which i doubt, walcott, gibbs, barazite, simpson, vela, rosicky??? and of course Nasri. If we need anything its a CB or a CDM, both of which he most certainly is not.

Might happen but i doubt we’ll see him or any major first team signings this window. Although part of me hopes im wrong…although another part of me hopes we buy no1 and give players like Gibbs, Merida, Bishcoff, Ramsey, Wilshire… maybe even Jay Thomas a chance.
