James Dunne has now returned to Arsenal after Nottingham Forest decided against turning his loan deal into a permanent contract.
19-year-old Dunne was joined by Paul Rodgers and Abu Ogogo at the City Ground in October, as then boss Colin Calderwood put the trio through their paces over a week long trial.
Rodgers and Steer were sent back to London, and have now sealed temporary switches to Northampton and Gillingham respectively. However, James was signed on loan until the end of January, where a review would take place, and Claderwood would then decide whether to make the deal a permanent one, or not.
But Calderwood was sacked in November and since replaced with former Derby chief Billy Davies. Dunne made a handful of appearances for Nottingham’s Reserves, yet failed to do enough to convince the management that he is worth spending some of their already tight budget on.
The former Wimbledon youngster is out of contract in the summer, but will continue training with Arsenal until a new club can be found.

Suprised they didnt want him. Hes a decent player who could find himself in the premiership one day with good form and a bit of luck, although i doubt he’ll ever be a UEFA cup quality player.
All these kids will find clubs, that much i’m sure of.
You might be right Johnny, but if there’s a lot of players around at the same level and a lot of clubs with tight budgets then people like James could well be squeezed out of the game. Shame if that happens, but it does happen a lot.
Dunne is not Premiership quality. Just because they are from our academy doesn’t make them superstars. Not every Barca kid is Bojan – some, haha, end up at Spurs! Get me?
Go to MLS Colorado Rapids perhaps with some others why not?????
I hate N. Forrest so much, he could have been on loan by now playing 1st team football by now, instead he spent 2 months playing reserves football against even weaker sides than he normally plays for arsenal. Wee bloody davies
Forrest? What a chump
Im from Nottingham and Forest havn’t got a tight budget. They spent the most in the championship last summer more than Wolves and Birmingham. The reason why Dunne was initially signed on loan was because the transfer window was closed, so Calderwood signed him on loan with the plan of making it permenant once the window opened in January. However the new managment decided against it.
burythehammer, Dunne can dribble, pass, tackle, win balls in the air all to a decent level and has a wicked shot that he should use more plus is both strong and has decent pace. Im not saying hes a superstar but if you look at some of the crap players on the team sheets of the smaller premierleague clubs he could after a few more seasons of development be better than them.
He’ll never be good enough to play in a UEFA cup squad, but he could one day be a decent buy for any struggling premier league clubs that need a few more options in midfield.
I admit he’ll more likely end up stuck in the championship, where he’ll end up being seen as a solid but not outstanding player, but premierleague could also one day be a possibility.
I dont think Rodgers, Steer or Agogo will ever be good enough for the premierleague, but there all good enough to find clubs in league 2, 1 and possibly the championship although there they’d be seen a future prospects starting as fringe first team players.
