So to the game the Reds created the better of the chances in an poor first half, as Arsenal were a little daunted by the occasion, Astrit Ajdarevic shot from distance went wide Martin Kelly had the next chance heading wide from a corner and we were looking over run by the Merseyside club.
But Arsenal came back into it, chances for French striker Gilles Sunu and skipper Gavin Hoyte brought saves from impressive Aussie keeper Dean Bouzanis.
For all Arsenal’s endeavour Liverpool were looking the better side David Amoo’s header saved expertly by Polish keeper Szczesny.
Liverpool were ahead by the break a deflected cross-shot from Reds captain Steve Irwin, his low ball fired across the box hit Hoyte and went beyond Szczesny.
Arsenal tried to come back into it with some silky pass and move football but Liverpool’s steel in midfield soon cut it out.
Amoo got away from Steer and again opted for the low cross Szczesny again missed it, it hit Paul Rodgers and just as it was about to go in for another own goal, Gavin Hoyte cleared it on the line.
Half Time – Liverpool 1-0 Arsenal
Whatever Steve Bould said in the dressing room seemed to work, Arsenal came out for the second half and were straight at “The Reds”, Randall tried another long range effort similar to his goal in the last round of the Cup but it flew over.
Kieran Gibbs had the next chance, his volley being saved by Bouzanis, Liverpool were frustrating Arsenal but the Gunners were still dominant.
Despite having all the play Liverpool came closest again,. Szczesny saved expertly from the impressive Amoo.
Jay Thomas came on for Sunu as Arsenal tried to get a equaliser but James Dunne ended any chance for Arsenal getting his marching orders for a second bookable offence after kicking down Amoo his second red card of the season really letting his team mates down.
But Arsenal battled on, Sanchez Watt having an goal bound effort cleared off the line as the Gunners tired.
Tommy Cruise was introduced late on, but it wasnt enough Liverpool into the next round to play Sunderland, in a dissapointing night for our youngsters who really missed Henri Lansbury in the centre, and the lack of a target man up front was a real problem.
