Match Report
Carlos started on the left of the midfield, with Italian World Cup winner Gianluca Zambrotta given the task of marking the Mexican, will Vela’s pace and tricks be too much for him or will he use his experience to snuff out the attacking threat? only one way to find out.. to the game..

The first 5 minutes were cagey, naturally Barcelona were on the offensive, Messi and Deco looking to get things going for the Catalan outfit, and it was Messi who had the first chance, linking up Henry he arrived in the box but couldn’t keep his shot down and fired over, Vela was then at the heart of Osasuna’s first chance playing Sola in which a chip ball, who rolled the ball into Plasil who shot just wide.

Plasil then found himself in the box with a good chance, but the experienced Milito and Thuram snuffed it out, and end to end first 10 minutes.

A long ball then picked out Bojan Krkic who weaved inside and shot low, but Ricardo was equal to it, the passes were not quite sticking for Barca on the waterlogged pitch in what was becoming a midfield battle.

The excellent Messi started the brightest of them all, his ball to Deco on the edge of the area showed great vision but the Brazilian born Portuguese international shot wide, Marquez’s high tackle of Plasil brought the game to a brief halt, the the Czech furious the Barca midfielder was not punished

Vela then darted to the touchline to keep in loose ball but at full stretch he struggled to get any direction on the ball and it went straight to Thuram who cleared, The Catalan side were dominant but without creating any clear-cut.

Juanfran was then booked for a late tackle on Marquez, and the rain began to pour heavier, but Barca where starting to find there range, Henry starting a move, feeding Messi, before arriving in the box and his bullet header was well saved.

But Osasuna came back, Vela had now switched to the right, he burst past Abidal and keeping the ball in expertly slide a cross low into the area Thuram just got there ahead of Sola.

Two more Barca chances, followed, a excellent run and skill from Ineista found him one of one with the keeper but from a tight angle he clipped it over the keeper, but it was cleared on the line for a corner, Milito headed it wide.

With 30 minutes gone, it looked only a matter of time before Barcelona capislied on there dominance, but credit to Osasuna they battled and defended bravely, Ricardo then saved a header from Henry after Deco’s freekick which was again cleared.

Carlos then had another touch, the ball coming to him after Iniesta miss-controlled, be Abidal came crunching in, and won the ball, Osasuna were again looking for Vela, sensing he would be the best chance of a goal, but excellent Barca defending again frustrated the travelling side.

Barca pushed for a goal before half time, Bojan’s low effort was well saved by Ricardo, and then Messi danced inside two players and on his weaker right foot drilled it wide, Flano then headed a freekick over, but was injured when stand in skipper for Barca Valdes came out and flattened him

With the final action of the half, Barca should have been ahead, Deco weaving his way through before laying the ball across for Bojan who missed an open goal.

A really fustrating first half for Barca as they tried to open Osasuna up, but also a fustrating first half for Carlos, who only saw the ball on rare occasion’s in a half where his side battled and were lucky to be level.

Half Time – Barcelona 0-0 Osasuna

The second half gets under way with Barcelona on the attack, after a slow buildup, but a misplaced pace allowed Vela the chance to bring it forward, he raced past two players, before Abidal came across and fouled him, Punal overhit the freekick.

Vela agin broke away, leaving Deco and then Henry for dead he couldnt control the ball but it ran kindly for Osasuna and Plasil found Sola who should have played the unmarked Carlos in, but shot high into the stand, an even start to the half.

Carlos had then returned to the left, and recived the ball from Plasil, but his final ball wasnt there and Zambrotta was able to clear, Osasuna were fantastic at the back, really well organised, but on set-pieces they failed to mark Barca, Milito heading into the side netting from a corner.

Vela was coming into the game more and more, coming back to help out his defence as well as looking to get people in, his link up play was great, if only they could find him more Osasuna looked like they could snatch a lead., Zambrotta then kicked Carlos down but the freekick was wasted.

Henry was lacking the killer touch, with Ronaldinho warming up on the touchline, Barca were again victim to the excellent defending of there visitors, Messi and Abidal with long range efforts, blocked and cleared, the home fans were becoming fustrated.

With half an hour left, Carlos’s friend and fellow countrymen Giovanni Dos Santos was ready to come on, replacing former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry, who looked a little dissapointed to be withdrawn.

Vela then had the ball again, driving at Iniesta and Deco he went past them but there was no final ball and Barca won it back, he then got the ball back, raced down the touchline but his cross was straight into the keeper’s arms.

Ronaldinho replaced Messi, with the pair having a kiss and cuddle beforing coming on, into the final 20 minutes, it was anybodys game.

Deco then blazed over when he was played in by Ronaldinho un marked on the edge of the box, and Dos Santos suffered from the same fate as Vela, excellent in possesion but could not pick out the final pass.

Giovanni then came close, drilling a left footed shot into the side netting, as we entered the final 15 minutes, Osasuna were on the attack, launching the ball into the box but nobody was there to get on the end of it, Carlos had now switched and was playing a “number 10” role behind the strikers, but still failed to see any of the ball.

As the rain thundered down, Ronaldinho went down in the box twice on both occasions demanding a penalty, then Osasuna got a free kick after minimal contact from Abidal, Vela slipped, battered bruised and dirty Carlos battled on, and Sola’s goal bound header was stopped expertly by Valdes.

On 84 minutes Carlos was replaced by Hector Font, a decent night’s work from Vela, he ran the channels and wasnt afraid of the occasion.

But harshly, Barcelona snatched all three points, Giovanni’s skills on the left, he pulled it across to Iniesta his shot was blocked, and it ran straight into the path of sub Xavi who thumped it in to the roof of the net.

Walter Pandiani came on for Osasuna but it was not enough despite a stunning long range effort from Azpilicueta, which was saved by Victor Valdes.

Full Time – Barcelona 0-0 Osasuna

After the game i caught up with a couple of Arsenal fans who also watched Vela, a London Gooner, and a German Gooner to get there opinions on all things Vela

What Did You Make Of His Game Tonight ?

Alex – I think for the weather conditions he played absolutely decent. He got some runs through the pitch and was only stopped by a foul from a Barcelona player. He was starting really well in the game had some good movements with Monreal on the left down side. It was finally very difficult today for all players on this waterlogged pitch and the horrible rain at Nou Camp and the energy was going by Carlos in the second half after 70 minutes. Later he was substituted.

Do You Think Carlos Will Be A Success At Arsenal ?

Matthew – Yes if think Carlos Vela will be a success at Arsenal he is a major talent, he proved earlier this season when he shined at the bernabeau he ran the show and won man of the match, at the tender age of 18 he is getting good experience by starting in La Liga he has 2 goals and quite a few assists, and i can see Carlos been a future legend at the emirates
Alex – Yeah I think Carlos Vela is a amazing prospect with a bright future at the Emirates! Of course he need some time if he is here to see how Arsenal play football in the Premiership but his loan spell give him much experience and I’m sure he will be play next season very often for us.

Where Do You Think He Will Play For Arsenal And Where Does He Play Best ?

Alex – I think to improve his qualities, at the moment its best that he played on the left wing but finally his movements are like a real striker. So i think both positions are possible.

Matthew – Well ive seen him play in two positions wide on the left and as a centre forward its hard to say where he’ll play best because when hes playing on the left he plays well, he tracks back well helps the defence and is good going forward, and great technical ability with the ball at his feet, he is known to many as a centre forward which he is good at he gets goals and assists last season at Salamanca he scored 8 and made a load of assists and in the under 17 world cup he got the golden boot so we all know he can score the goals i think he will end up as a striker, but is equally able to play out wide.

What Are Carlos’s Best Qualities ?

Alex – The best qualities of Carlos are, he is very quick, tricky, he has a great pace and amazing movements also he has a good finish but the amazing thing is that he has a great attitude to learn every day from his coaches.

Matthew – His main attributes are he’s pace, hes hard work and hes technical ability and he can score goals, hes technical ability is good and he has got very good tricks i remember watching the match when Real Madrid were playing Osasuna at the Bernabeau and Carlos did an amazing skill on Sergio Ramos, it was like a cruyff turn through hes legs !! i think he is a good goal scorer also he proved this last season at salamanca and in 2005 at the u-17 world cup.

Who Is Better, Giovanni Does Santos Or Carlos Vela ?

Matthew – they are both very good talented players but i think overall Vela is better

Alex – Everybody is saying that Giovanni dos Santos is the better talent because he is playing for one of the worlds biggest clubs at Barcelona but i don’t think so. I think Carlos is one of the biggest prospects and for me better than Giovanni because Carlos is a teamplayer and that is a thing that i miss on Giovanni. Carlos is looking for his teammates on the pitch and that give him the opportunities to improve and work on his qualities.

vela is a very good player, and will be awesome for us next season hopefully, but gio is better in my opinion, and i’d love for us to sign him in the summer if the rumours of barca getting rid are true. his performance in the youth world cup was fantastic, and early on for barca he looked like he could have a messi-like impact this season, but after bojan leapfrogged him and rumours of hit attitude etc he hasn’t got a fair chance. he’d be a perfect arsenal signing. when asking about vela’s qualities, he’s pretty much a clone of reyes, nippy with good technique and a good footballing brain. dos santos when dribbling is messi-like, at times untouchable

j.sanderson, i think you are wrong. dos santos is good, but i think he lacks one thing that makes all Arsenal players, they all pass the ball. This seems to come naturally to Vela plus many other qualities. I personally think he will replace rosicky next season, and can’t wait for him to joins us at the Emirate.

I think Tomas Rosicky’s place on the left side of midfield will go to Vela next season. Carlito is just as technical (relatively speaking, given the age and experience difference) but much more direct, which applies very well to the Premiership. People tend to compare him to J.A. Reyes, but the guy he reminds me of is C. Ronaldo. Not the stupid tricks one of a few years ago, but the lethal, current one.

I watched the match today, considering the terrible weather and the strong backline of Barcelona i thought he did a good job,1st half he didn’t get much of the ball, seems as if Barcelona was always trying to play the ball down the opposite side of Vela . The second half he saw a lot more of the ball but with slick pitch couldnt really show his abilities, but still a job well done, and funny that it was about 3mins. after he was subbed out Barcelona scored lol….oh and another thing,Dos Santos is a great player, but I still rate Vela higher than him,and so do other football pundits,he has skills and pace but Vela is still ahead of him, just that Dos Santos plays with a bigger team and Vela plays with a team fighting to stay out of regelation. But I have high hopes for him at Arsenal,of course he will need to adjust but I’m sure he’ll be great!

i watched the barca vs osasuna game whole 90 mins, i was not as impressed as u guys are. he is good, but i dun think he is ready for big games yet. against teams outside top 6 in PL, he should do pretty well. against the top 6, he probably needs 2 or 3 more years. just my honest opinion.

i don’t we fans are hyping him up too much and that really won’t do him too much good. I’m sure he’ll come good but adaption to epl is harder than it seems. look as reyes, he ran the show in sevilla before joining arsenal but it still took him quite a while to get going, before he decides he doesnt like the weather. give him a year or 2 at least and then he will make a real impact at arsenal
