In today’s big debate we ask the question, “Is Hard work ever a substitute for natural talent?” or in other words, is a player who runs all day to benefit the team as good as a player who has technique for example is excellent on set-pieces or goalscoring.
Emmanuel Adebayor is a good example of somebody who has been on both sides, this season he has scored the goals and the fans has been more supportive of him, whereas last term he ran the channels and worked hard, but many fans did not support him as much.
To apply it to the Reserves and Youth, should we be signing players of high technical level or hard working players, for example Luke Freeman tackles and runs around chasing the ball is he as good as Rhys Murphy who scores goal after goal without working as hard.
I put the question to a whole variety of Arsenal fans, from Germany [Alex] creator of the Carlos Vela News Site and Malaysia [Kelvin]
Kelvin – “I personally view working hard as a process. Natural talent is of course natural, which means it comes with you when you’re born. If one has natural talent, hardwork is the process of speeding things up towards fame and glory. But if one doesn’t have natural talent, hard-work is the process of building things from scratch to achieve fame and glory.
Hard-work cannot substitute natural talent, but both hardwork and natural talent are essential, with natural talent being the “catalyst” for achieving goals faster”
Alex – “I think that only a young player who worked every day on his qualities with the coaching staff on the club and in his spare time will make it on a club like Arsenal.
The main thing for good development is that the young players should have a good attitude to work every day hard to achieve the dreams. A young player could be very talented but if he didn’t work hard i think he get problems in the future to make the step into the professional football and into the first team of his club.
If you look at the young gunner you can see they are a hard worker but on the other side you see also lazy players who thinks that the step in the next area would be easy, that is a bad attitude and that player will make it definitely not at Arsenal. If i look on our new signing Luke Freeman, I think he works very hard for the team but finally he didn’t scored so much goals like Rhys Murphy or Jack Wilshere. Every player has a place in the team and must do the job on the pitch and finally you cannot win matches with one or two or three amazing talents,
you need the full team to have a great spirit and to get goals. The step into the professional football is very difficult but if you look on the clubs there are not only the amazing technique and high level young players there are also the hard worker to develop later into world class players. So i think to work hard every day with the coaches nad also in the spare time is very important to develop into professional football. Players who are lazy and with a bad attitude will not make it long term at a big club like Arsenal Football Club”.

Is Rhys playing again yet??
I’m sure Freeman is talented as well and not just a hardworker, because I doubt Wenger would put so much afford in signing a hard working kid.
I personally think that your natural football talent can get you to a certain level but desire, hunger and most importantly luck is what it takes to get to the top
