Easter Monday, see’s League 1 and League 2 sides in action this afternoon, which means Millwall were playing, which means Jay Simpson was in action as the Lions took on second from bottom Luton Town.
Despite having being in action on Saturday, Kenny Jackett named a similar team, with super sub Bas Savage partnering the in form Lewis Grabban, Jay Simpson started wide on the right, with former Gooner Ryan Smith starting on the left, on loan from Reading midfielder Jem Karacan also started.
How They Lined Up
Millwall:
Evans, Senda, Bakayogo, Fuseini, Robinson, Whitbread, Smith, Karacan, Simpson, Grabban, Savage,
Subs: Pidgeley, Brkovic, Shaw, Cochrane, Martin.
Luton Town:
Brill, Jackson, Keane, Emanuel, Spring, Bell, Parkin, Charles, McVeigh, O’Leary, Hutchison.
Subs: Andrew, Davis, Goodal, Beavan, Currie.
The points were crucial for both sides, with Luton trying to get out of the relegation places, and Millwall desperate not to slip into them, one side battling relegation could be out of the race today, if Port Vale lost, and results did not go their way, they would be playing League 2 football next season.
However with just 19 minutes gone, Port Vale scored in their game, putting further pressure on Luton, the side one place above them to get something from this game, but it did not spur them on, in a first half of little chances, as the game became “must not lose” rather than “must win”.
As half time approached, striker Lewis Grabban pulled up injured, and with no obvious replacement on the bench, Jay Simpson was pushed up front with Bas Savage, with Ahmet Brkovic coming on and moving to the right wing, the pace and power of Simpson, added to the physical prowess of Savage could overload the Luton back-line in the second half.
Half Time – Millwall 0-0 Luton Town
Shortly after the second half got underway, news filtered through that Port Vale had now gone 2-0 up, a surprise result, but one that could drag the sides above back down, the pressure was on for both sides.
With little being created, Jackett made moves to change things, Ryan Smith was pulled off on the hour mark, and David Martin was introduced, but it was not enough, and it finished 0-0, Luton look doomed, with Millwall left looking over their shoulder 6 points off the relegation places.
