This Merida situation is ridiculous — the boy is a talent worth millions of pounds and basically a year of his growth toward Premiership football is being wasted.

I don’t know who is to blame for this obviously horrible match — no doubt Real Sociedad are now in a strop and leaving Fran out to prove they can’t be bullied from England — but this sort of thing MUST be prevented.

Some of the blame must come back to Arsenal for not thoroughly researching a loan agreement before sending a player off.

It is just maddening to read routintely that players like Merida, Randall and Gibbs (who apparently has won over his critics) have wasted another week on the bench.

Let’s find a few select clubs, make feeder agreements with them and thus we’ll KNOW that they’re going to play.

Wasting nearly an entire year when a gifted young player is close to fighting for a first-team slot is really and truly idiotic.

I have to believe that somewhere behind the scenes, Arsene is fuming.
