Saturday’s Results

Mark Randall – Preston North End 2-1 Burnley

After claiming in midweek that he did not expect to walk straight into the Burnley team, Mark found himself left out of the 16 that travelled to Preston for the early kick off.

Things started of badly for Burnley, when on loan from Watford striker Tamas Priskin cropped up and finished well on 5 minutes, the perfect start for Alan Irvine’s in form side, however on 38 minutes James O’Connor snatched an equaliser to set up an interesting second half.

The game was decided in the second period with a strike from Chris Brown with 54 minutes on the clock, not even the returning Andy Cole could save them, a second successive defeat for Burnley.

Kieran Gibbs – Norwich 5-1 Colchester United

Coming into this game, Norwich had a shocking record, they had not won in their last 5 games, and not scored in the last three, and having started last week, Kieran Gibbs suffered the same fate as Mark Randall, and was left out of the squad.

However he was not missed against the Bottom side, former Liverpool defender Jon Ostembor got things going as he was allowed to come racing forward from right back and left fly, to give the hosts the lead, which was doubled on 36 minutes after a composed strike from former Colchester striker Jamie Cureton, Kevin Lisbie then pulled one back. and Cureton would get the chance to double his account from the spot on 53 minutes,

He converted from 12 yards to put the game beyond the visitors, and with just three minutes left the super impressive Cureton completed his hat-trick, before a late Dion Dublin effort set Norwich back on track.

Jay Simpson – Oldham 0-1 Millwall

Manager Kenny Jackett decided to switch the side ahead of his team’s away game at Oldham, new signing Jem Karacan, who impressed against Arsenal’s Reserves earlier in the season was given a starting birth, as was former Gunner Ryan Smith.

Jay Simpson also started in his usual right midfield position, and like always Millwall left it late, before Bas Savage fired home on 76 minutes, as Millwall looked like they had stole the points, however it fired Oldham into action and much travelled striker Leon Constantine equalised 3 minutes later.

Jay played the full 90 minutes.

Sunday’s Results

Carlos Vela – Osasuna 0-1 Real Betis

Carlos Vela failed a fitness test ahead of Osasuna’s home game against Real Betis, and is now doubtful for Mexico’s clash with Ghana at Craven Cottage on Wednesday.

Former Liverpool winger, Mark Gonzalez bagged the only strike, on 54 minutes, however any hopes of a comeback were dashed, when former Real Madrid midfielder Javi Garcia was dismissed for a professional foul in stoppage time.

Fran Merida Perez- Real Sociedad 0-1 Gijon

Fran Merida was named in the squad as promotion chasing Real Sociedad took on Sporting Gijón, however he was only named on the bench.

Real Sociedad suffered defeat, Mate Billic bagged the only goal on 81 minutes, Fran was again, an unused substitute, Sociedad remain in the promotion places, but pressure is increasing on coach Jose Ramon Eizmendi.

Pedro Bothelo – Salamanca 0-1 Castellón

Pedro Bothelo returned this week after being in Brazil to look after his sick father, and after only a couple of days training had to make do with a place on the bench.

Salamanca needed the points to stave off relegation worries, however Juan Ignacio gave Mario Arana the chance to converted from the spot on 68 minutes, and he obliged, to hand Castellion all three points.

    Good post mate.

I thought Pedro and Merida would start playing reguarly but it looks as if they are becoming bench warmers.

What’s the point of sending them out of loan if they are getting minimal playing time?
