Player Profile – Ignasi Miquel

Spanish defender Ignasi Miquel signed for Arsenal in February 2008, in a deal Young Guns broke first.

Following in the foot steps of Cesc Fabregas and Fran Merida, Miquel came through the Barcelona Academy, but after five years he was released and told he simply was not good enough.

But he kept mentally strong, and joined Catalan minnows UD Cornella, (who play in a special Catalan league, or level 5 in the Spanish league system) where after some amazing performances at both left back and centre back he earned rave reviews, as well as a call up to the Spanish Under 16s side which in front of watching scouts he again impressed.

Manchester United, Villareal and even former side Barcelona were now keen on him, with United faxing an offer for a trial, but after it was refused they dropped their interest.

Arsenal moved quickly, and snapped him up beating the likes of Villareal, Valencia and Manchester United to his signature for an approximate fee of £900.000, the player will not link up with the club until he turns 16 in October 2008, but has been in London recently setting up schooling and housing for his winter arrival, he will live in the same digs that both Fran Merida and Cesc Fabregas stayed when they arrived at the club.

A giant at 193cm, Miquel is a dominate figure in the air in both attacking and defensive situations, but he is also good with the ball at his feet, being able to spray passes all over the park, but its defending the goal where he comes into his own, tough tackling and energetic he will need to adopt a more physical in England but he has all the talented needed to perform in modern football.

Exciting talent. One question about our defense. Who do you think is ahead in the pecking order, Gavin Hoyte or Kyle Bartley? How would the Reserve team look like with everybody healthy and home from international duty? Not counting on loan players and first team players like Song.

Hope it didn’t get too complicated ;)

Gavin Hoyte is ahead because he has a pro contract, so we have to play them to get our money’s worth
