Arsenal Take Young Norwegian Goalkeeper On Trial

A member of Chatsoccer forums (a website about Ireland’s youth players), has confirmed to Young Guns that Arsenal have taken Norwegian born Ireland Youth International, Sean McDermott on a short term trial.

The 16 year old stopper ply’s his trade for home town club IK Var in Kristiansand, (Southern Norway) and qualifies for Ireland through his father, who is Irish born but moved to Norway after meeting Sean’s mother.

Sean is a passionate Irishman and has always wanted to represent the country his family hails from. It is thought Liam Brady took advantage of his new role as the Republic of Ireland’s assistant manager to get a first hand look at McDermott.

As plans develop for the summer it seems Steve Bould is keen to add a new goalkeeper to his ranks, with current number one Wojciech Szczesny expected to join Neil Banfield’s Reserves for next season, and questions being raised of James Shea’s abilities.

QPR keeper Liam O’Brien came on trial earlier this season, however he turned down Arsenal and moved to Portsmouth on transfer deadline day. But it seems it could have been a good thing as McDermott is rated highly by the Irish coaching staff.

Sean nearly joined Manchester United last year, after attending one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s soccer schools in Norway, but United decided they did not have room for another stopper and it seemed he would not get his dream move to the Premier League.

In an Interview with Chatsoccer.eu Sean admits it is his ambition to play for a club in England, and also become number 1 for Ireland.

“I would love to see myself as first choice for Ireland, and with a Premier League club.
I always thought if I ever got the chance, I would choose Ireland, and thankfully I got that chance!”

He also spoke about the talents he posses and which are his special abilities:

“I have quick reactions and i am good in one-on-one situations. They (The coaches) say I’m a good shot-stopper”

No specific deadline has been set for the trial, but it is thought to be around 2 weeks. The 16 year old could also feature in the forthcoming tournament in Atalanta should be impress sufficiently.

We need a good keeper talent imo! Mannone or Schenwknsc(sry, just cant remember how it’s spelled xD) Doesn’t seem like the most extreme of talents..

i agree we need another under 18 keeper, but Mannone and Szczesny are both superb talents.

This week has been super for Szczesny, he won man of the match on Saturday, and saved a penalty.

Mannone has also saved penaltys this season too.

He plays for IK Vag from southern Norway. I watched him play in the norwegian Nike cup where his team lost in the final. He looks like a good goalie, by far the best in that tournament. Big lad, mature and good with his feet for a young goalie. And his age is 15, he is born in 1993.

Well, if he that good at such a young age as to draw interest from this great ball club, he will be a hell of a keeper.
