Loanees – Merida Celebrates New Contract With A Goal

Welcome to Young Guns reports of the weekends matches for all of our seven young players currently out on loan.

You can read more about how loaning works, as well as catch up on any reports you may have missed in our loanee’s section Here

Kieran Gibbs, Mark Randall – Norwich City 2-0 Burnley

Arsenal team mates Kieran Gibbs and Mark Randall, were reunited yesterday at Carrow Road, but the friendship was soon forgotten as the game kicked off with vital points the prize for both teams, however Mark and Kieran had to start from the substitutes bench.

It took just 2 minutes for the opening goal to go in, and it was Norwich who took the lead veteran striker Dion Dublin notching the home side in front, before Welsh Under 21 International Ched Evans bagged another in the second period to snatch all three points, the win all but ends Burnley’s faint play-off hopes.

Mark and Kieran were both unused substitutes.

Jay Simpson – Millwall 1-1 Gillingham

Jay Simpson was rested for this game and placed on the bench, ahead of the final run in as Millwall took on fellow battlers Gillingham at the New Den.

Things got off to a bad start when the Gills snatched the lead through a rare goal from Nicky Southall, however as the points seemed to slip away, Ryan Smith was pulled off, Jay came on to a terrific reception and played a part in the equaliser with 15 minutes left.

His run and then cross found Paul Robinson who slotted home to rescue the point, a vital point and one which See’s Millwall move a step closer to avoiding relegation, thanks in part to Jay Simpson.

Jay played 35 minutes.

Pedro Botelho – Salamanca 0-0 Ejido

After injury, the Salamanca medical staff had doubts over Pedro’s fitness so despite training with the side, he was left out of the squad as in form UD Salamanca took on bottom club Ejido Poli away.

[6pm Kick Off – Latest Score] 0-0

Carlos Vela – Osasuna 0-1 Recreativo Huelva

Carlos Vela sat this game out after picking up his 5th booking of the season last week, it also meant Vela could fully recover from his injury problem, as in from Osasuna took on Recreativo De Huelva.

Jose Angel Ziganda replaced Vela with Arcaya Jokin, however he was pulled off at half time in place of Eduardo Dady, Osasuna lacked the belief as well as attacking prowess without Carlos, and lost 1-0 when on loan Liverpool striker Florent Sinama Pongolle fired home on 37 minutes.

Carlos Vela will return to the side next week.

Fran Merida Perez – Real Sociedad 2-1 Hércules

After signing a brand new contract in midweek, Fran celebrated by getting more minutes on the pitch with loan club Real Sociedad, where after proving his fitness in training this week, he was handed a start, as the promotion chasing Basque outfit took on Hercules.

Before the game it was confirmed the Spanish second division side had sacked the manager Jose Ramon Eizmendi after the club dropped out of the promotion places after three straight defeats and appoint Juanma Lillo for the rest of the season, the new coach picked Fran and he would not dissapoint.

Agirre Sendoa’s 64th minute strike put the visitors ahead, before Delibasic levelled, in an important game for both sides, but Fran would crack home the winner, he danced inside, and on his left leg drilled a low effort into the corner to gather all three points.

Vincent Van Den Berg – Go Ahead Eagles

Due to Vincent Van Den Berg’s contract being cancelled at the end of the season, Young Guns will not be offering reports on Vincent’s progress with the Go Ahead Eagles.

Your right mate, Jay deserves better than Millwall, but i dont think he is good enough for Arsenal.

And Randall is amazing, he has done really well for Burnley when he has got game time, but they wont play him.

    Very dissapointing.

    well doen Fran tho !

GREAT to see Merida getting some playing time, and congrats to him on scoring the winner! :)

Agreed, hope Randall gets more playing time between now and the end of the season.

What do you think Randall and Gibbs chances are of making it at Arsenal? Think either of them, or both, will get a chance with the first team next season?

Who do you think will get a chance with the first team next season, from the reserves?

haha, i think we all see the potential in Fran.

he has all the qualities needed to make it here, whereas the other players are only maybes.

and yeah C-J he could play first team, but not straight away, im sure he will get his chance, the new contract proves it.

lol :) I didn’t mean it as “would he get the chance straight away”. Sorry if it came out that way. Meant it more like if he’ll get a chance to practise with the first team, maybe come on as a substitute sometime, etc. That kind of chance.

Clearly Fran’s face just did not fit with the previous manager. First chance he gets to play and he scores the winner! Wenger rarely ‘bigs up’ a player as he has done with Fran, so clearly he believes in his quality. I don’t think Fran will be a full-time first team player next season, but I feel he will be on the fringes of the first team and probably play in the CC games. Wenger has also said that Randall, Gibbs and Lansbury will be joining the first team next season and given that he has resisted Millwall’s efforts to keep Simpson and spoken about him having a future at Arsenal, he may also be given some chances to prove himself next season. I think Wenger would like to see some of the English players make it at Arsenal and this is the first generation that he seems willing to try out.

do you really think fran will be coming back straight away? i was assuming he would follow in vela’s footsteps and be loaned to a la liga team like osasuna next yr, returning the yr after. as its a huge step from spanish 2nd to premiership..makes more sense to go through osasuna 1st. what do you think?

Ashgoon brings up an interesting point – should Merida go to Osasuna next season to get experience in the Spanish first division? Vela did that and it looks like its really benefitting him. Then again he didn’t have much of a choice as he was waiting on his Spanish passport.

Also what position does Merida play? I know he can play in the Fabregas role as an attacking central midfielder – but can he also do a job on the wings? He would be useful there for both Osasuna in replacing Vela, as well as for Arsenal – as that’s where we currently have a need.

    J. Sanderson + any others – what do you think?

He can play left wing too mate, he is more of a Xavi type, likes to drop back a little and play passes, and i think we should bring him back in the summer.

get him into the swing of things.

fran going via la liga isn’t a bad idea actually, esp if all he’d realistically get is bench time, or several caring cup appearances

having said that, we are desperately short of creative minds in the first team… it’s cesc or cesc, so fran would need to grow up quickly and jump the gulf between spain 2nd div and PL, and with him already at 18 he should make it somehow if he’s determined enough, hopefully

just forgot to mention that fran and all these young ones on loan or with the reserves, in my opinion, aren;t going to be worse off than the like of diaby or giberto given their disappointing performances this year, albeit not regulars — they lack drive and hunger these young kids possess, i feel

Are you sure his contract will be cancelled because apparently he scoreed a hat-trick?

Vincent Van Den Berg: Go Ahead Eagles 6-0 Helmond Sport

The versatile forward had a great day with his on loan club Go Ahead Eagles as the Dutch side went to beat Helmond Sport 6-0 with Van Den Berg capturing a hat-trick.

It all started on 9 minutes when a deep cross came in with the dutch-man flying in to header the ball which smashed into the bottom left corner to give the Eagles the lead. Then on 31 minutes Van Den Berg gave it to Van Pasto who netted to give the home side a 2-0 lead. Van Pasto being a very good freind of Vincent from the SC Heerenveen youth system. Then Van Den Berg got his second of the game with a nice finess shot past the goalie. Then Vincent completed his hat-trick with a free-kick from 23 yards out and Kaduro got a penalty at the 86th minute before Dewit Greni grabbed the last goal in injury time on the 15 year olds debut.
