April Player Of The Month – Jack Wilshere & Podcast #2

16 year old England Youth International Jack Wilshere is Young Guns Player Of The Month for April 2008.

Wilshere’s month started on the 5th as Arsenal’s Under 18s won 3-0 against MK Dons, despite not getting on the score sheet, he impressed and was unlucky not to grab himself a goal. However better things were to come from Jack.

His next fixture came on the 8th as the Gunners travelled to Millwall, knowing a win would put them top of the League and all but guarantee the title. Goals from Rhys Murphy and Conor Henderson were matched by Jack’s super second half strike.

It all came down to the Bristol City game on the 12th, Steve Bould knew three points would put his side in the play offs, and they would do that thanks to a last gasp goal from Wilshere. His right footed pile driver with just three minutes left gave Arsenal the vital win needed.

Just two days later, Wilshere was named on the bench for the Reserves clash with Derby County. After an injury to Justin Hoyte on 40 minutes, he got the chance to show what he can do for the in form Reserves side. Arsenal ran out 5-1 winners, and Jack was one of the star performers making two goals.

Jack was rested for the final Under 18 fixture of the season against Fulham. However he came on for the final 20 minutes and helped play a part in Thomas Cruise’s equaliser, which saw Arsenal finish the season unbeaten.

Wilshere was saving the best performance to last. After being granted a start against West Ham in Reserves League South, he created the opening goal for Rui Fonte with a neat ball between the defenders, and then scored a stunning 25 yard curling effort to rap up the three points.

After suffering the disappointment of going out the play offs to Aston Villa, he was named on the bench for the Reserves ahead of the final game of the season. He came on and helped get the attacking flow going, with lead to Kieran Gibbs last minute equaliser.

The month finished with praise from Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, after he confirmed he would be in the first team setup for next season. Yesterday also saw him yet out to Italy to take part in the Atalanta Cup.

Congratulations to Jack who will be in the running for the end of season awards, which take place next week.

Sanderson, why do you think wenger didn’t mention Jay Thomas in his list of future stars? For me he is one of the brightest prospects we have.

Sure Jimmy, i am a fan of Jay Thomas. But he was dreadful at centre back against Villa, much prefer him in central midfield.

We have so many bright prospects its impossible to mention them all.

I shall have a listen to the podcast. I hope K. Gibbs stays, from the times I’ve seen him play he looked very good.

It would do him well to go on loan with a premiership team, west brom maybe.

    Great site.

J, do you know why there seems very little talk of Barazite? From the little I have seen of the reserves he stands head and shoulders above most players in terms of his maturity and ability. Do you think we may see him in the fold next season?

The music volume should be lowered a little bit, it can be kind of hard to concentrate on what u actually discuss sometimes.

But GJ and keep it up! Great efforts! :D
