Beyond The Academy – Arsenal's Under 16's Stars

To celebrate the achievements of Arsenal’s Under 16 team in winning the Atalanta Cup earlier this week, Young Guns will bring its readers closer to some of the brightest prospects from the team, and players to watch out for next season as many of them push forward in to Steve Bould’s Under 18 team.

We profile midfielder Chuks Aneke, as well introduce defenders George Brislen-Hall and Daniel Boateng as well as forwards Jeffery Monakana and Jason Banton.

Chuks Aneke – Central Midfield

Highly rated Chuks Aneke is another product of the famous Hale End youth system, as well as being one of the youngest players to represent England at Youth level.

A central midfielder by trade, Aneke can also play wide on the right or in a traditional “number 10″ play making role, using his impressive passing range to create attacks or his vision to arrive in the box and get on the end of them.

His giant powerful physique has led to comparisions with former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieria, his low centre of gravity allows him to turn and roll defenders with ease.

Touted as one of the most exciting players coming through the Academy, 2008 looks to be an important year for Chuks as he looks to make the breakthrough to Steve Bould’s Under 18s.

Name: Chuks Aneke
Age: 15
Nationality: English
Position: Central Midfield
Previous Clubs:
Contract : Scholarship

George Brislen-Hall – Left Back

George Brislen-Hall known simply as George Brisnal, is a relatively new name to most fans but definitely one for the future. George breaks the mould of Arsenal left backs as previous owners of the slot have been of French origin, but Brislen-Hall can take heart from the Gunners last English left back Nigel Winterburn.

A tough tackling and rugged defender, George goes about his defensive duties with a nonsense physical approach, and despite not being the tallest his physical prowess and strength is exceptional. Although he puts defending first, he is not afraid to get forward and cross or even try a shot and has bagged the odd goal.

Name: George Brislen-Hall
Age: 15
Nationality: English
Position: Left Back
Previous Clubs:
Contract : Scholarship

Daniel Boateng – Central Defence

Powerful central defender Daniel Boateng has formed a superb partnership with Oliver Nicholas in recent weeks for the Under 16s, having previously played for the Under 15’s on a regular basis.

A centre back by trade, he can also play left back or as a holding midfielder, and at over 6 foot tall is a towering and physical presence at the heart of Steve Gattings side. Daniel is English born but of Ghanaian descent, and with his fantastic performances this season he looks set to be called up to the Three Lions youth teams next season.

Boateng looks set for an impressive season next term, and he has everything in his locker to become a fantastic prospect for the club.

Name: Daniel Boateng
Age: 15
Nationality: English
Position: Central Back
Previous Clubs:
Contract : Scholarship

Jason Banton – Winger

Talented Forward Jason Banton is in his second spell with the club after leaving in January 2008, before returning a few weeks later after spells with West Ham and Tottenham.

He was offered scholarship terms at the start of the year, and despite being one of the most talented players in the system a deal was agreed for him to join North London rivals Tottenham, but things did not work out in his short time with Spurs and he joined West Ham on trial.

However Arsenal signed him back with Ahmed Abdulla leaving the club, and he has shone, his partnership with Benik Afobe in the Under 16’s has been fantastic, blessed with superb pace and energy, Jason can play wide on the right, where he scored for England Youth in the Victory Shield as they won the trophy, or as a supporting striker where his eye for a pass and classy play-making mean he is a danger to any defence.

Next season should see Banton step up to the competitive Under 18’s league, a huge challenge for the local boy, but his has all the attributes to offer Steve Bould’s side an impressive option.

Name: Jason Banton
Age: 16
Nationality: English
Position: Winger/Striker
Previous Clubs:
Contract : Scholarship

Jeffery Monakana – Winger/Forward

Like several of the players in the Academy/Youth system Jeffrey is also a talented musician, creating tracks in the “Grime” genre, but its football where his true talents have come into their own. With the sale of Ahmed Abdulla its allowed Jason Banton to leave the right wing position and support leading marksman Benik Afobe up front and Under 15’s starlet Monakana has pushed into the side offering a different option to the fore-mentioned Banton.

Monakana is blessed with electric speed, and is excellent in possession the only criticism of his game would be he could release the ball a little earlier, however it is something that as he pushes on to the Under 18’s and finally Reserves will surly be coached out of him.

This season will be seen as an important one in Jeffrey’s development as he has added goals to his game, something all quality wingers need, and subsequently making him one of the biggest and most exciting prospects currently in the system, definitely one to watch in future months as we get a bigger picture on whether he can make a break through or not.

Name: Jeffery Monakana
Age: 14
Nationality: English
Position: Winger/Striker
Previous Clubs:
Contract : Scholarship

They’re not really first choice though, traore’s made like 3 premiership appearances and evina aint even played for our 1st team as far as i know, permanent 1st choice left backs which spring to mind over the past 15 years have been Groves Winterburn and cuntface cole – all English, anyways its irrelevant, good blog.

But George isn’t a first team player, he will maybe take the place that Clichy, Evina and Traore have had in U 18 and reserves.

They both did, the pictures from above are both from the Atalanta Cup.

The players will not be added to player profiles until they are Under 18 players.

I will not cover Ansah as he is only 13

I like how you mention three times George Brislen-Hall is a very physical player and then if you look at the top picture you realise his initials are ‘GBH’!

Hope some of these lads make it to the first team, thanks for your hard work J.Sanderson, you must go to a lot of games!

How much I would give to be in the Arsenal academy. That must be the best thing. It must work on the English ladies too, I suppose.

Good coverage again. I can’t wait to see Afobe with the U-18 next year. Wilshere and Afobe, they are the future.
