Internationals – Walcott, Merida, Bendtner & Others

The majority of Arsenal’s young playing staff are currently away on holiday, but a select few have been called up to play for their countries, in friendlies or in qualification games over the next few weeks. You can keep up to date with all the players fortunes in Young Guns International Watch.

In today’s review we feature the following players, in the following games.

Theo Walcott – England V United States
Nicklas Bendtner – Denmark V Holland
Merida, Barazite, Nordtveit, Traore & Gibbs – UEFA Under 19 Qualifying.

Theo Walcott – England Full National Team – Friendly

After a fantastic end to the season, and some impressive performances for England’s Under 21’s, Theo Walcott has been included in Fabio Capello’s squad for forthcoming friendlies against The United States Of America, and Trinidad & Tobago. The first of those fixtures took places this evening at Wembely, with Walcott named amongst a 16 man substitutes bench.

The game was a boring, lack luster opening half an hour, with both sides struggling to open each other up despite Steven Gerrard slotting home David Beckham chipped cross, only to find out the whistle had already been blown. However John Terry headed home from Beckham’s cross before half time, and then Gerrard slotted home Gareth Barry’s through ball to all but wrap up the win.

With an hour gone Theo Walcott was sent to warm up, but Fabio Capello did not decide to use the Arsenal youngster, and favoured the more established players in the squad.

After the game Capello cut his squad down leaving out many of the first team players, meaning Walcott could be given a chance against Trinidad & Tobago on Saturday.

Nicklas Bendtner – Denmark – Friendly

Nicklas Bendtner played the full 90 minutes as Denmark drew 1-1 with Holland this evening. Nicklas put in a superb display and set up Christian Poulson to score, after Ruud Van Nistelrooy had put the Dutch ahead. Read more about this game over at Nicklas Bendtner News.

Fran Merida Perez – Spain Under 19’s – European Championships

Holders Spain are on course to win the Championships again, after booking their place in the finals following three excellent wins. First of all away to Ukraine which they won 3-0 thanks to two goals from Emilio Nsue and one from Aarón.

Then came another 3-0 win this time over Turkey, with a double from Ignacio Camacho and one from Ivan Bolado seeing of the Turks. Their final game came against Armenia, and in an exciting encounter it took two strikes from the Arsenal man Merida to win them the game.

Bolado and an Antonyan own goal had given Spain a 2-0 lead, but then came efforts from Voskanyan and Gyozalyan setting up a tight finish. Goals in the 84th and 87th minutes from Fran saw them win the game and book their place in the finals.

Nacer Barazite – Holland Under 19’s – European Championships

The Netherlands are un-certain of their passage into the finals, after failing to win both of their qualifying fixtures. The much fancied Holland opened against Russia, and went behind as Magiure put through his own net with just 5 minutes gone. Then came a come back as Georginio Wijnaldum smashed home a stunning free kick, before Mochalin restored the Russian advantage just after half time. But Wijnaldum stuck again late on to rescue a vital point heading into the next fixture.

Up next was Greece in what promised to be a tough fixture for Barazite and his team mates. The first half was a tight and goalless encounter, before Lefteris Matsoukas put the Greek’s ahead. The Dutch late show looked like it had come to the rescue as Género Zeefuik levelled on 87 minutes, but reported Arsenal target Sotiris Ninis scored a penalty in stoppage time to win the game.

Havard Nordtveit – Norway Under 19’s – European Championships

Havard Nordtviet will spend the summer resting after his Norway side failed to reach the finals, after two defeats in two fixtures. Nordtveit played the 90 minutes in both games, the first of which was a 3-2 defeat to Iceland, before then losing 2-0 to Bulgaria two days later.

Kieran Gibbs – England Under 19’s – European Championships

England are on course to reach the finals, putting behind them the disappointment of missing out qualifying for the Under 17 Championships last month. A fantastic 2-0 win over Poland in game one got things going, as West Ham’s Freddie Sears scored twice.

The second fixture against Serbia also brought three points, as Reading’s James Henry saw his deflected shot fly in. Kieran has started both fixtures, and it seems is a key part to their team.

Armand Traore – France Under 19’s – European Championships

Armand Traore is the only French player not plying his trade in France, but is still a regular in Luc Rabat’s team.

They also look on course to reach the finals, and got of to the perfect start as two strikes from Dominique Malonga, added to a goal from Fabien Robert put them 3-0 up. But a fight back from visitors Switzerland set up a tight finish as Fabian Frei scored twice, however they held on to take the points.

Game two against Sweden was a much tougher fixture, but again the three points were gained with Robert on target again, added to by a goal from wing wizard Gabriel Obertan.

Well done Merida and before roumers start i have heard of Wijnaldum and seen vidieos of him but he is a fan of Feyenoord and they see him as truely unsellable and this is a team very well run so money is not of need to them

Nice to see Gibbs getting some international experiance, hes one of my personal favourets from the reserves. Also nice to heard about Fran showing what he can do, Spain much be favourets for this because the quality of their youth sides is incredible.

I Hope Walcott starts against Trinidad but i doubt it, he’ll almost certainly feature at soem time in the game though.

More international news BTW, Holland vs Denmark just finished 1-1, and Bendtner was teh stand out player on the Danish side and possibly the game over all. A lovely assist just after half time and came very close to making it a Danish win several times. Van Persie didnt play (he’ll probably feature in their last friendly before the start of the Euro, Van Basten didnt want to risk him picking up an injury apparently, and you can see his point.)

He played as a striker in one game (cant for the life of me remember which one though, i think it was in the last round of qualifiers). Didnt score though, personally i see him as a winger and thats where he seems happiest, but i think he mostly plays left back for the french youth set up.

Yeah Chaos, I watched some parts of the game too. Bendtner looked lively and created quite a few chances for his teammates. The last shot he had was great, after beating a few defenders. Took a great save from Edwin van der Sar to stop it. Although not going to the Euros, glad Bendtner gained some more experience under his belt.

B-)Maybe Wenger could make Toure and Gallas co-captains to solve the problem and definitely pay Toure at least the same amoumt of money per week as Gallas. I think that we need a goalkeeper (PSV’s Gomes), a big and aerially dominant centre back (not many truly quality ones nowadays like Adams or Terry to a lesser extent – maybe Raul Albiol or Zapata), two defensive midfielders (Veloso and Yaya Toure), a left winger (Ben Arfa) and a striker to cover van Persie or Eduardo due to injuries (Stuttgart’s Gomez or Villa or Huntelaar). Some cover for the full back positions would be appreciated as well whether we buy or use Eboue (you have to admit he was quite solid as a right back especially during the UEFA Champions League 2006) and Traore.

Does anybody agree and if not, what do you propose?

Bendtner has played 21 games for Denmark and scored 7 times
Before the game against Holland he had scored in the last four games. Even though he did not score tonight he was by far the best player on the pitch. The Dutch defenders could not handle him at all. In Denmark we know that he is much bigger talent than the Arsenals fans realice. He is Denmarks biggest talent, Just wait, he will an absolut monster.

Not all Arsenal supporters underrate Bendtner. Many of us regard him as a great prospect. He understands team-play and is developing as an all-round player who can lead the line but is also a good footballer when he drops deep. He is, simply, a much better footballer than Adebayor.

The criticism of Bendtner annoys me greatly. He has proven consistently at international level that he has the ability, despite being just 20 years of age. He ahs had one season in the Arsenal first team, so the way in which some people have been writing him off is laughable.

Its exactly the point, he is only 20 year, he is already being recogniced as The player Denmark cant do without. Compare him (except cech) to any other topplayer when they were 20, henry, rvp, pires..the list could go on forever.., give him a little slack and let him grow, he will come more than good. lucky he is a strong mentally (another asset to him).

Does Nordveit captain the Norway side (armband in pic)?

the reason Bentdner’s been criticized is because he has had to play almost out of position when he’s alongside Adebayor, which is clearly not his fault, and has looked a little rusty.
when he’s played with eduardo or on his own he’s been awesome

there are things that can be trained/learned and there are things that can’t be trained/learned in football. for example, wenger will never ever go for a player just because of his finishing because you can easily improve your finishing by spending 20 hours a day shooting in front of goals for a month. you can also easily learn tackling or trickeries in weeks or months but you can’t possibly learn to be intelligent in weeks or months or even years. things like ability to read the game, composure, how comfortable you are on the ball, speed etc can not be learned or taught. my point is, don’t judge a striker by the number of goals he scored or dun judge a midfielder by the number of assists he provided. I have always been a great fan of bendtner and adebayor. they read the game a lot better than van persie and eduardo. they may not have the finishing of eduardo or the freekick of van persie, but they are so comfortable on the ball and they can run with ball and drift in and out and the know where to pass the ball and where to run. those who have criticised adebayor are idiots. and those who criticised bendtner are too idiot. we have more than enough talent upfront. all we need is a winger to cover for the injury prone rosicky, a defensive midfielder to fill the gap left by flamini, and maybe a good old fashion defender to stand in when toure or gallas is unavailable.. and we will be good to go. also, i know a lot of the fans are extremely critical of eboue but let me tell you this, apart from the theatrics, he is in fact a pretty good player. he reads the game well, he can go pass players, he has fairly good speed.. all he is missing is a couple more assists and a few goals. don’t forget, he brings steel to our mellow 2006/2007 team and he has done some pretty good runs too. as soon as he chips in a few goals and put in a few more assists, everyone will be singing his name, i can assure you.

Nic’s scored 7 goals in his 17 international apps. for quite a few of his caps, he was on as sub. he was also the top assister of denmark in ECQ. it’s officially 4, but it should’ve been 6 as his 2 assists in Sweden game were cancelled due to off pitch incident (the game was ruled as a 0-3 defeat for denmark). Nik was a 2nd half sub in this game and helped the team back from 0-3 down. he was always lively in NT. he impressed me a lot when he played as a sub on for injured robin in cc against doncaster 2 years ago. he is one of those rare players who play with brain rather than instinct at very young age (cesc is another one ). Nik obviously has football intelligence which can’t be gained by cultivation. he would be getting better and better, had he got more experience.

I think the concerns with Bendtner are not his footballing ability, but whether he is really committed to the club. Some of the noises come from him and his Dad have made the Arsenal fans uneasy. The Flamini and Hleb cases show how quickly fans can change their opinion on a player when he doesn’t respect the club.

If Bendtner is sticking around for a long time then we’re all very excited to see his progress. Indeed he might be a real surprise package.

Nicklas is simply going to be awesome for us come next season. He has all the attributes in his favour – skill, strength, height, intelligence, aggression, confidence and fearlessness. He is also a workhorse who covers for others in the mid or defence whenever there is need to do so. His weaknesses though have been impatience and failure to accept his position in the ranking order. Otherwise 16 goals each for him Theo next season should see us win trophies!!!!!!!

Bendtner is a superb talent and this season will highlight that. The experience he has gained will do him wonders and his emergence next season will spell the end of Adebayor.

He is a different talent to Ade but I think next season we will begin to see AW using a looser formation in a 4-3-3.
The same formation he tried with Reyes,Dennis and Henry.
The new formation wont be used straight off but in time will become more apparent.
    A front trio of Theo-Nic-RVP/Vela/EDS
the formation can then revert to 4-5-1 when defence is required.

I think AW is licking his lips at the talents which are about to burst onto the scene.
Also spending the summer and preseason with AW and the coaches will do see Nic gain yet more experience and Knowledege not to mention playing against Real and Juventus

bendtner still has a lot to learn. Adebayor is a far better player and I cant see Bendtner being as free scoring as Ade no matter how many games he’s given. i know this board promotes our young talent but reading some of the comments about how Bendtner is going to replace Ade is laughable. 30 goals in a season? Bendtner is better than Adebayor in the long term (no question about that), when Bendtner matures in 2-3 years Adebayor will be sold for a huge money and open a slot for Walcot.
That must be Wenger’s Master Plan.

Sorry but I cant see what the fuss is with Bendtner. Hope i’m proved wrong. To me he is distinctly average and with limited scoring ability. I wouldn”t be surpised to see him off loaded within the next year or so. Jusdging from how he’s integrated into the squad i cant see that the majority of the first team would be too sad to see him go.

Dave, in a small comparison, Adebayor’s best attribute is his physical as aspect, that very own attribute is won by Bendtner.
Why I don’t know, but you can check the video tapes of last season and see the proof that with Bendtner on the field Arsenal can play more direct and the guy wins far more high balls than Adebayor ever will.
I know Adebayor is taller, but Bendtner shows that he isn’t afraid to stuck in and most of the times he wins due to his hard work.
Adebayor for all of his big body lose most of the high balls and have the highest record of being caught offside.
Bendtner needs experience, and couldn’t be completely trusted now.
Offloading Bendtner without giving him the chance of a regular first team birth would be a big mistake by the club.

All I know are the games I’ve witnessed where Bendtner started at the expense of Ade. In the vast majority of those games we struggled and it was only when Ade was introduced that the team began to look threatening. How anybody can still have doubts about Adebayors worth to the team is crazy. Bendtner is nothing but an average back up player. Hopefully he can go on to prove me wrong but at the moment I believe he’s attitude may well hold him back and eventually see him transffered out.

reyes, firstly the player reyes was awful so for your username to be called “reyes” is quite ironic because quite frankly it is the perfect simile.

Your comments on these threads have been quite frankly terrible, often calling for the head of sanderson and trying your best to constantly criticise him, and then you come up with another beauty:

“in a small comparison, Adebayor’s best attribute is his physical as aspect, that very own attribute is won by Bendtner.”

hmmmm… that surely wouldnt suggest that bendtner is not only better at ade when it comes to strength, but because you say, ade’s best attribute is his strength, but is better than him at every attribute.

hmmm let me mull this one over..your an idiot!

There is not one aspect that bendtner beats ade at.

Ade’s goal per game ratio is higher
    His heading is better
his first touch is a mile better
his strength IS better he holds the ball up fantasticaly
He has more pace and higher stamina.

Ok Adebayor isnt the greatest finisher yet score 30+ goals. WOW if someone is an awful finisher and scores 30+ goals he can only become much better.

Bendtner is a fantastic prospect but ADE is pure quality. His build up play is fantastic he has a load of assists a load of goals, a variety of quality goals, spurs goals, newcastle, headers tap ins… etc.

Ade does NOT lose most of the high balls!!
Ok he is offside a lot but he is constantly a threat to the back line always making runs and often getting through on goal.

I am not shouting at you about your comments on bendtner but on those of ADE. Youe bendtner comments I slightly agree with apart from him being better than ADE at nearly anything!

I dont know how you can call Bendtner “average” being a 20 year old and scoring 9 goals in your debut season which is 1 goal every other start i might add and also 7 assists. How that can be called “average” i do not know some people are so ignorant to peoples talents. Bendtner has also got 4 goals in his last 5 international games and was the stand out man an in the game last night so wtf you people on about saying hes not good enough.

I do however agree that Ade at this moment in time is better than Bendtner but why cant people just accept we have two great strikers who will provide good competition for each other? :@

Well I’ve read that at some other blog comments so I can’t be the fool.
If you add the offside numbers that he have been caught by, you can say those were future opportunities wasted by Adebayor, a forward must deal with every ball as an opportunity, and be up for it every time, not only when he wakes up after sleeping most of the match.
I wish Adebayor eradicate his weakness, there is still a lot to be desired, but he must be the first one to admit it, and show us he is improving by not falling for it again next season, or his place wont be guaranteed.

Yes Ade is first choice and on last seasons showing deserveably so however Nic is a serious talent and serious pressure on Ade which inturn will see the best of ade, which is what we want.
Two top class strikers, however Nic cobines with the other strikers better, which is also another plus for the team.
So pack in the bickering, Ade starts for now, Nic learns his trade but by the end of next season lets judge if potential is reality and whether if one of the two could be offloaded for an enormous fee.

When you find that other people are right, you run away by saying something childish like:
“I take it your bedroom walls are covered in Bendtner posters judging by the rubbish you both talk. Children.”
Bendtner is no Bergkamp, Henry, Pires, Viera, Overmars so that I keep his pictures in my house, Legends are the only players worth of keeping their pictures in my house and Bendtner is till too young to earn such a degree.
So grow up, and have some respect with other people’s views especially if they are older than you and experienced what a real legend look like.

LOL. Hasn’t Wenger told ous that despite Nicklas height, he ain’t good in the air? A Zlatan-type.

Im not trying to say Bendtner is better than Ade im just trying to say give him some credit hes a good player and will be great back up to Ade next year i just dont like the way you can call i good player who trys hard “average” dave. Also i do have a reason to monitor Bendtners career closely as at last members day i was lucky enough to take up the ball he kicked into the crowd at the end of the training session.

Thanks for the advice Reyes but any one older than 17 who has photos of any player in their house quite frankly shouldn’t be giving out advice to anyone. However you are amusing and I do find the rubbish you post very entertaining. Good luck with the statistics you have created. They are a great piece of fiction.

Well I’m interested to know how old are you Dave? I’m more than 30 by the way, my English language isn’t that good so I can’t be judged by it.
You certainly entertained me, usually there is a lot of biased fans like you, so I understand why you don’t check facts and statics before attacking other people opinions.

reyes how am i going to put this forward, i am not used to speaking to severe idiots but I will have a go:

Ok When you talk about goal ratio ok(i hope you are keeping up) You talk about goals per game ok? Am i going too fast? goals per game! yes he has a lot of oppurtunites and he gets into fantastic position(explains the offsides) he often takes a gamble and it often pays off.

Your 300 is a pure guess yes it was probably a lot but ore around the 100 mark depending on what you classify as chances.
30+ goals in 50 games is pretty darn good by any standards. Thierry was playing for the same team getting similar amounts of goals…. We didnt want him to leave when he was doing that!!

Rees and Dave why don’t you both open your eyes to each others opinions!! They are both decent strikers with areas that can be improved on! Adebayor needs to give fans the feeling that whenever he has the ball we think he will score, i can’t say that is the case at the moment because he still misses too many good opportunities. And with Bendtner he is only 20!!!!! There is massive room for improvement but i feel that he is a very good and able replacement.
Put it this way i would rather have them both for the time being and not just one or the other, at least until we can afford Villa :-)

Without being condesending Reyes, I am older than you and have supported the club a lot longer than you. I remember my dad taking me when John Radford was our top striker. Now I’m not biased and would like Bendtner to make it at the club. At the moment I believe him to be a player of potential and no more. In terms of “biased” I suggest you read your commenst regarding Ade. Not only are they pathetic they are also highly in accurate and child like. I know your 30+ so please do yourself some justice and stop acting like someone 20 years your junior.

Can u both be civil, Ade brings a lot to the team, Bendtner also has potential to bring to do good things for the team but he must allowed to develop. Also has already stated in an end of season interview that he misses load of chances created for him & that he working hard in training to rectify it.

I dont actually think finishing as such is the problem with, his problem is more to do with Variation of Placement [left of goal, right of goal, chipping the keeper, round the keeper], he seems engulfed in placing the ball to the left of the keeper only. Whereas at the start of the season, he was varying his finishing.

welovethecesc aka sogos, I don’t have to lower my self to your standard and start calling you ……, but you don’t seem to understand, when Henry was here although he scored 30+goals he had many assits which made him the legend that he is, the team wasn’t as dependable on Henry to score as on Adebayor now, so the 30 goals isn’t nearly enough for us to win competitions, if his teammates are creating a lot of opportunities for him to score then he should without a fuss, its not like he had magic to reach fantastic positions, its the teams interplay and he just simply wasted their efforts by continuing wasting opportunities and falling in the offside trap (ratio per opportunity in the whole match) meaning how many opportunities he needs to score one goal.
Clacko the Gooner, Thank you thats a good start to a non biased conversation.
Dave maybe you were lucky to attend matches with your dad, and I’m from abroad but that doesn’t make you a better supporter than me.
Why can’t we reach the opinion that no player is God, and no player is complete, every one has a weakness, and it is no crime in asking this player or that to cure it.
Please understand that it isn’t the intention to have a go at Adebayor in person, as I don’t know the guy in real life, but I hate certain aspects in his game which I think he should improve as it is not impossible.
You can’t deny people for wanting the best for our club, and if you were that old of a fan you should know more about a lethal forward than what we currently have, I’m only asking him what is possible for him to achieve.

I believe I even said “Your 300 is a pure guess yes it was probably a lot but ore around the 100 mark depending on what you classify as chances.”
So when I was comparing Bendtner and ade I was comparing goal ratio(which as I already explained was goal per game!)
Your cmments are ludicrous, mke up statistics on the spot and bull shitting you way through comments. You are quite clearly not beyond the age of 30+ and you are NOT spanish because despite your child like comments the grammar is not that of a foreigner so dont pretend to be someone your not ok.
Mummy is probably waiting for you but please do read on…
Adebayor was not only getting into many positions but also was creating so many chaces that OTHERS did not finish….gone looking for statistics… ok Adebayor was our fourth biggest assist taker and apart from that consatnatly constantly was creating with his runs strength and would often build attacks.
What i am getting at is if he is such a bad finisher why did RVP or even Eduardo not have a better Goals per game ratio than him….. hmmm yes I thought so.
ADE gets into positions and can score every type of goal.
Go support spurs “reyes” or Atletico Madrid but dont gor crying to mummy and daddy and finally do something good for everyone please

please leave all arsenal boards alone

Well if you don’t understand English than it is not my fault, don’t read part of my comments and leave the others without understanding them first.
I’ve said concerning the 300 issue: “Well I’ve read that at some other blog comments so I can’t be the fool”.
Tell your parent to read my comments for you and understand them well, then come back to me after you cleaned your mouth son.

Yes you can be the fool just taking other peoples statistics without proof. Again more proof or your idiocracy!! 300 sounds like such a nice hmm..it must be correct. yes Adebayor just happened to score 30 goals with exactly 300 oppurtunities, how nice!

That is not even taking into account what can be classified as a blatant missed chance..but anyway I have had enough speaking to childish people on this thread so thank you and goodnight ( Yup it is past Reyes’s bed time)
