Amaury Bischoff – Transfer Details & Player Biography

One of the surprise transfers of the summer is set to go through in the next 24 hours, as Amaury Bischoff completes his switch to Arsenal, after his former employers Werder Bremen released him from his contract.

In light of his imminent arrival, Young Guns has researched our proposed new signing, to bring you a full biography of everything about the 21 year old. The profile includes coverage of the following topics:

* His Up bringing
* Being spotted and then playing for his local team
* Early Arsenal Interest
* Transfer to Werder Bremen
* Becoming an International
* Playing style
* Injury Problems & Being promoted
* Arsenal transfer & being released

Amaury Bischoff was born in the scenic town of Colmar, Strasbourg, on March 31st 1987. His father is French and from the Eastern City of Alsace, but he would inherit duel nationality as his mother is Portuguese.

As Amaury grew up he was inducted into the Academy at home town club SR Colmar, and was soon established as one of the brightest prospects in the system. Before he could even make the first team RC Strasbourg pounced for his signature. Despite having other offers on the table, the family preferred him to join RCS, as the clubs training centre was just 40 miles from the Bischoff’s home.

His performances for Strasbourg were mixed at the start, as he began to try and establish himself in the clubs competitive Academy. During this period he was picked up by Arsenal officials, but before any move could be made by the Gunners, he was transferred to German side SV Werder Bremen. At just 18 he was in a brand new country, but language was no problem for Amaury, as German is also spoken in his native home town Colmar.

Whilst in Germany he quickly earned a place in the youth teams, before being promoted to the Under 23 squad aged just 19. Where the confusion over why Arsenal are buying him comes in, is that Bremen’s Under 23 side is unlike most Reserve teams in England. They play at a high level, in front of often large crowds, meaning the youngsters are already playing at a level equal to the Championship.

He was soon selected to play for France Under 18’s, making three starts during a mini tournament. Bischoff would go on to pledge allegiance for his mothers country Portugal, and was selected for the Under 20 side to compete in the Toulon tournament shortly after. However, at the training camp he sustained an injury, which meant he was unable to feature.

His performances for Werder’s U23 were catching the eye, he mainly featured in a central midfield position, but also on the right hand side. Amaury is an excellent set-piece taker, frequently taking corners and free-kicks for the German outfit.

Bremen often chose not to promote players as quickly as English sides do, and although Bischoff trained with the first team on various occasions, the form of Brazilian play-maker Diego meant he was forced to remain in the second team.

Last year brought more chances for the midfielder as he was promoted to the first team. He started against Liverpool in pre-season, before featuring during the UEFA Cup clash against Celta de Vigo following an injury to Diego. It promised to be an excellent and productive season for the Frenchman, but a thigh problem ruled him out for most of the campaign. But he returned, and made a handful of Bundesliga appearances, before the thigh issue returned again.

This summer his contract was up for renewal, and before Bremen could put an improved offer to the prospect, Arsenal moved in offering him a ‘dream’ switch to London. Werder would subsequently try and match the deal, but he rebuffed the advances and told the Gunners he would be signing for them.

On July 1st it was confirmed he had been released, and was now a free agent. He finished his career with the German outfit on 62 games for the Under 23 team, scoring on six occasions.

Amaury has been in London this week, undertaking a medical and agreeing personal terms, before he puts pen-to-paper on a one year contract. The reported terms of the agreement mean should he prove his fitness, and Arsenal are impressed, it can be extended by a further 12 months.

He will train with the first team squad during pre-season, but will be playing out the first months of his Gunners career in the Reserves team in a bid to gain match fitness.

    Maybe Dein realised the serious financial restraints that AG would have on future transfers. Maybe its Dein who knew too much for certain other board members confort. after all dein was the only true life long Arsenal fan on the board apart from Hill Wood who is still stuck in the 1950’s.

    Dave, your comments are a joke. Wenger wasn’t lying to the fans. Things behind the scenes change… things you do not know about. There are so many reasons for why Wengers plans changed, who knows, he might have a commanding CM lined up, for example if he believed Yaya Toure would be part of the Hleb deal, it might have led him to believe another CB was not needed. The Nasri transfer has clearly been held up by issues with Marseille, and the Hleb transfer has also had an impact. To claim he has lied is just stupid, you know nothing about the reasons for why things have changed. I wish fans would stop acting like spoilt kids, Wenger is doing everything he can to make us successful next season

    Lads remember those teams strengthening lots like spurs are shit – we have a very good team that is getting better and only needs minor tweaking. when Nasri joins along with Vela we will have additional resources to add to the quality we have already. Give Wenger a break – he knows best.

    Look everyone

    We should all bow down to Dave, the angry loner. he knows esxaxctly how Arsenal is run.

    he knows nasri aint signing, he knows Dein was brilliant at signing all our players and if any left, it was Wenger’s fault. he knows how to get the best for AFC, he is a football genius, it is sooooo obvious the way that he tells people to piss off, get back in their cage, call em pricks and says they are talking bollox..

    If that aint enough proof that he is a Football God, then i dont know what is.

    people thinking he is a sad frustrated loser should think again.

    i’m getting fed up with Nasri stuff as well, but remember, Arsenal has always done their deals in a very secretive/discreet way, unlike this time. What do we know what might have gone on behind Sagna’s transfer?

    so your saw that game did you you cunt?No,if wenger rates him then i trust him more than i trust your opinion.Your obviously a dick!People didnt knew fuck all about players like petit,viera etc when they arrived so i think we should give him a chance!Ok so wenger does make some mistakes but what harm is a free transfer on low wages going to do?If he is injury prone we will probably sign him on a pay as you play deal anyway so its not going to damage us financially.Fuck off down the lane you cunt!

    Barcelona must choose between Yaya Toure and Hleb
    Saturday 28 June 2008 – 11:23:52 – Click to post or view

    Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger is still holding out for Barcelona to include Yaya Toure as part of the deal to take Alexsandr Hleb to the Nou Camp.

    He want either one or the other to be playing in Arsenal’s midfield next season, so if Pep Guardiola wants Hleb so much then he hasno choice but to let Yaya join his brother in North London.

    Barcelona Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain, explained the situation, insisting that the new Barcelona coach doesn’t want Yaya to leave.

    “Nothing has been decided as yet,” said Begiristain.

    “But we want Yaya to stay with us and he is not on the market.

    “Guardiola considers him to be an important player in his new project.”

    But only yesterday, Guardiola announced that he was still interested in signing Hleb, and had also put in an offer for Andrei Arshavin, so maybe he is now waiting to see if Arshavin agrees to go to Barcelona, before sanctioning the departure of Toure.

    Barca have just completed the signing of Dani Alves for 24m.

    I’m begining to seriously doubt that they will have any money left to bid for both Hleb and Adebayor. Its becoming increasingly likely that we will see the both of them if nto atleast one of them in Arsenal shirts next season.

    How would you feel about that?

    As a gooner, I would find it hard to overcome the lack of respect both have paid to fans over the summer.

    So Dave you’d risk missing out on your number 1 transfer target for the sake of announcing it earlier, even though it makes no difference to us when it is announced other than to appease childish and impatient fans such as yourself?

    Marseille do not need or particularly want to sell Nasri and we’re bound to not be the only club interested, so it is wise to play ball with them, in addition to which we like to do the right thing as much as possible and I for one respect that. If at the beginning of the season Nasri is part of our squad who cares if it was announced 2 months before or the day before? Frankly if you do then that is your problem, not the clubs, deal with it.

    Once again I find myself having to point out Wenger only said he hoped to make those signings, not that he would, or that he promised to. If you don’t know the difference then once again that is your problem, perhaps you should invest in some basic English classes. How do you know Friar wasn’t on the phone about a transfer? For all you know it might of been about Ramsey or maybe Nasri, perhaps another deal we are yet to find out about, or one that fell through for some reason. Guilty until proven innocent is not a system that goes hand in hand with support in my book, or in any reasonable persons book for that matter, try giving the club the benefit of the doubt.

    Finally if you think it is so pathetic being dictated to by Marseilles, what do you think about being dictated to by clueless fans who bitch and moan all the time like a 6 year old that has just been told Christmas has been cancelled?

    As David said, maybe it is that we are waiting for the home shirt to be realeased… sounds stupid but maybe its true. Would cause quite a stir at the Armoury. people are there to get their shirts, they hear Nasri has signed and people decide to get it on their own replica shirt. Should go some way to repaying his transfer fee. :)

    As for what Diouf said: it will be ANNOUNCED, not completed, finalised etc. So its obvious that hes signed and we waiting for a big press conference.

    So correct me if im wrong but this is basically like Baptista, we take him on for 1 season and see how he does, if we dont like him, off he goes.

    Some1 else also made a good point (cant be bothered to check who), that like the Italians and Spanish, in Germany they generally wait a long time before bringing players throu to first team football, especially sicne (i believe this is right) their B teams, much like in spain, play against professional outfits in the lower leagues. So the fact hes hardly made a first team appearence at the age of 21 isnt actually that uncommon, and doesnt meen hes shyte.

    dein really loves arsenal. yeah great. it was deins son who was acting as thierry henrys agent for the barcelon deal.. he helped to ship out a legend. maybe thats why he had to leave. just a thought. also when marseille were relegated to the lower divisions through corruption arsene wenger was the monaco coach at the time. he refused to accept the french title through default. a year later arsene was sacked contraversialy.it may just be bad blood that folows arsene continually through his superior understanding of football whilst doing it in the right way. we see the bias against arsenal world wide.asrene tries to run arsenal ethicaly and financialy correct with balance. its the way of the samuari.he doesnt want to give in to the money men by becoming one.he doesnt want to play ball, thats why we are held back. the money men know that if allclubs were to be run like arsenal the money men would find it hard to hold position. arsenal are on course. at newcastle last season away we had 9 fisrt team players out. african nations eduardo broken leg. all these problems we still finished 4 points behind man u 2 behind chelski and got far in all competions. 7-0 against slavia prague plus dodgy refs.arsenal fans who cant see have no vision for faith.arsenal are NUMBER ONE.for them to be that we have to believe that were number one too. so all this in house fighting is what the media want. we have got to stick together just like the team.plus we are all arsenal. we need to be fighting in the same direction with the same breath and the same heartbeat. i u want to enlighten your self read [football is fixed.com] and type in arsenal and read the blogs.look how much money the big teams have spent plus having the media backing and stil arsenal still play the best plus giving unknowns the chance

    Hey nice piece of work.

    The point that i would like to raise is how many midfielders are we gonna get. What happens to the players already in the reserves and academy like merida, lansbury, barazite and now ramsey and the many others. We should rather spend our energies sourcing out players for our defence where i think we’re stretched thin..and a world class goal keeper…

    Josh I’m as sure as it is possible to be that this signing is very much an “extra”. By which I mean Wenger saw this guy was available to pick up for free, obviously knew about his talent, so decided to give him a one year shot to get some fitness and prove himself. Basically a low risk high reward gamble which should have no impact on other signings Wenger was planning to make. It’s clear from Bischoffs comments that he expects to start in the reserves, so a good way to look at this is to think of him as a classic Wenger youngster signing, just an older than usual one! A signing based on talent not immediate first team impact or to put it another way, definitely not a substitute for signing Nasri.

    Sounds like a win-win deal for Arsenal, if he proves his quality they can keep him on; if he fails to deliver they can let him go without being bound to a long contract.

    It’s definately not going to be their big summer move, but Arsene has proved time & time again he gets these sorts of transfers done with the future in mind. It will be interesting to see what becomes of him, and how many first team games (should he prove his fitness) he will get during the season ahead. As Agent 47 says, the gunners are pretty stacked with midfielders – I can only assume that one or more of Merida, Barazite, Ramsey etc will go on out loan, as surely Arsene will want to see this fellow for himself.

    @ fishboxen – and therein lies my point. Sending out those players on loan would compromise their development in a way..they would have a lesser chance of becoming a first team arsenal player. A prime example would be that off David Bentley. And look who plays on the right now the erratic eboue?
