Amaury Bischoff – Transfer Details & Player Biography

One of the surprise transfers of the summer is set to go through in the next 24 hours, as Amaury Bischoff completes his switch to Arsenal, after his former employers Werder Bremen released him from his contract.

In light of his imminent arrival, Young Guns has researched our proposed new signing, to bring you a full biography of everything about the 21 year old. The profile includes coverage of the following topics:

* His Up bringing
* Being spotted and then playing for his local team
* Early Arsenal Interest
* Transfer to Werder Bremen
* Becoming an International
* Playing style
* Injury Problems & Being promoted
* Arsenal transfer & being released

Amaury Bischoff was born in the scenic town of Colmar, Strasbourg, on March 31st 1987. His father is French and from the Eastern City of Alsace, but he would inherit duel nationality as his mother is Portuguese.

As Amaury grew up he was inducted into the Academy at home town club SR Colmar, and was soon established as one of the brightest prospects in the system. Before he could even make the first team RC Strasbourg pounced for his signature. Despite having other offers on the table, the family preferred him to join RCS, as the clubs training centre was just 40 miles from the Bischoff’s home.

His performances for Strasbourg were mixed at the start, as he began to try and establish himself in the clubs competitive Academy. During this period he was picked up by Arsenal officials, but before any move could be made by the Gunners, he was transferred to German side SV Werder Bremen. At just 18 he was in a brand new country, but language was no problem for Amaury, as German is also spoken in his native home town Colmar.

Whilst in Germany he quickly earned a place in the youth teams, before being promoted to the Under 23 squad aged just 19. Where the confusion over why Arsenal are buying him comes in, is that Bremen’s Under 23 side is unlike most Reserve teams in England. They play at a high level, in front of often large crowds, meaning the youngsters are already playing at a level equal to the Championship.

He was soon selected to play for France Under 18’s, making three starts during a mini tournament. Bischoff would go on to pledge allegiance for his mothers country Portugal, and was selected for the Under 20 side to compete in the Toulon tournament shortly after. However, at the training camp he sustained an injury, which meant he was unable to feature.

His performances for Werder’s U23 were catching the eye, he mainly featured in a central midfield position, but also on the right hand side. Amaury is an excellent set-piece taker, frequently taking corners and free-kicks for the German outfit.

Bremen often chose not to promote players as quickly as English sides do, and although Bischoff trained with the first team on various occasions, the form of Brazilian play-maker Diego meant he was forced to remain in the second team.

Last year brought more chances for the midfielder as he was promoted to the first team. He started against Liverpool in pre-season, before featuring during the UEFA Cup clash against Celta de Vigo following an injury to Diego. It promised to be an excellent and productive season for the Frenchman, but a thigh problem ruled him out for most of the campaign. But he returned, and made a handful of Bundesliga appearances, before the thigh issue returned again.

This summer his contract was up for renewal, and before Bremen could put an improved offer to the prospect, Arsenal moved in offering him a ‘dream’ switch to London. Werder would subsequently try and match the deal, but he rebuffed the advances and told the Gunners he would be signing for them.

On July 1st it was confirmed he had been released, and was now a free agent. He finished his career with the German outfit on 62 games for the Under 23 team, scoring on six occasions.

Amaury has been in London this week, undertaking a medical and agreeing personal terms, before he puts pen-to-paper on a one year contract. The reported terms of the agreement mean should he prove his fitness, and Arsenal are impressed, it can be extended by a further 12 months.

He will train with the first team squad during pre-season, but will be playing out the first months of his Gunners career in the Reserves team in a bid to gain match fitness.

    What people forget is that other countries do this. Spain allow their B teams to play in the lower leagues, it means that younger players still get experience while they slowly wait for a place in the side.

    But still, this summer is such a broken record it’s ceee-razy.

    Interrogé sur l’officialisation du départ de Samir Nasri pour Arsenal, le président de l’OM Pape Diouf a déclaré que l’annonce serait faite “dans deux jours”. Et de nuancer : “Allez, dans quelques jours”.

    FFS We are getting played by Marseille! I swear they are toying with us, we can’t seem to put our foot down…So now, the deal should be done in two days, according to that (Source: OM Website and ‘La Provence’)

    Cheers guys. I will admit i was quite against signing him, but once i learnt more about him i think it can be an great bit of business.

    He seems a top prospect that has lost his way a little, were getting him for free on a one year contract, so there is no risk. If he turns out to be something special then brilliant, if not then it doesnt matter.

    Arsenal dont buy players for the sake of it, something special must have been seen in the boy.

    You’re right about young players in Germany and especially in Bremen. You rarely see a 21 year old playing regular football in Germany. Even the likes of Podolski and Schweinsteiger have not played much for Bayern this season. Ballack, Frings & Klose werent really known before they were 24.

    This guy is all fine and good, espeically since he is free but it is hard to get excited by any transfer news out of Arsenal lately. I doubt he will play a huge roll in the first team. He has been injured and needs to get back to it. Nasri thing seems like it is just getting dragged on for no reason at all. All the while Ade’s agent is trying to rob the club blind, Helb hates noise and we still have no flamini replacement even though Wenger promised us 2-3 signings in 3 weeks (read its, he said this on Arsenal.com on May 10th) and all we have is Aaron Ramsey. nothing against the kid, I am actually really excited about him but he is hardly the depth and experience we were promised.

    I agree J that we don’t sign people for no reason, which is why i am sure there has to be some quality in the Amoury kid but still, it is hard to be pumped up about yet another kid with bum luck. great site by the way.

    Nothing against you Mr S, but this aint nothing to get me going!

    I am sure Werder tried really hard to keep the injury prone fella, thats why his contract was allowed to run down.

    Lets face it, it is a PATHETIC, cheap skate signing whast ever way you wanna look at it or indeed dress it up.

    3 years in Bremen and NOTHING. Don’t tell me they wouldnt promote him if he was good enough?

    I have every faith in Wenger and his scouting network, but this one?

    I just do not get it???

    Now if he was a central defender, a winger, a defensive midfielder, then maybe that would make sense.

    But to me, it is another examplr of the strictly small time, stubborn transfer dealings we have been forced to accept.

    Shit, i know im being harsh, but heand on heart…

    can ANYONE tell me, honestly that this is a signing to be excited about???

    The one year contract is presumably because Wenger wants to give him a chance to prove himself after injuries and all – it’s a cheap punt. If he’s working out come Christmas I’d imagine he’ll get a longer deal, if not then it’s not cost us much.

    Thanks for the article!

    Just two small corrections:

    * Werder Bremen Reserves play in the third division (Regionalliga) in Germany, not second-level Championship. But you’re right, at least it’s competitive football.

    * Bischoff hasn’t played a single minute of Bundesliga football. He only featured as a sub against Celta Viga for Bremen’s first team.

    “Bremen’s Under 23 side is unlike most Reserve teams in England. They play at a high level, in front of often large crowds, meaning the youngsters are already playing at a level equal to the Championship.”

    The comment regarding Bremen’s Reserves is essentially correct though they play in the 3rd tier of the Bundesliga which was split into two regional divisions (there will be one 3. Liga from 2008/09). The standard is,therefore, probably more akin to Div 1/Div 2 rather than the Championship.

    Could be simular to Palcios only that we actually purchase the player this time in the event that he turns out as good as Wilson

    Yes I see the sort of signing it is now and I am happier about it. the one year deal in order for him to prove his fitness tells more or less the whole story. This is not the saviour that the fans want but neither is he likely to reduce the chances of wenger signing a proven player.
    I dont know what wenger is thinking but I doubt this signing will hugely affect his plans for other players.
    basically, wenger rates him and there was an opportunity to sign him for free. wenger is not making any promises about his fitness or anything, he’s a bonus player.
    One worry would be will he get enough chances in the team and therefore will be restrict other players’ chances of games? the squad can only be so big.

    Dave, if the Nasri announcement is being held up for the reasons we all believe then it is most likely Marseille has requested this delay. Arsenal is simply respecting its wish.

    It is a bit annoying this whole thing but the transfer business is murky and odd at times. Who knows what is going on.

    Further, there are many potential deals clubs embark upon and then come to nothing. Imagine if us fans were kept up to date of such things. The inevitable disappointment would be more frustrating and sometimes embarrassing. Look at Utd and the Ramsey thing!

    The other thing about Marseille is the power of the fans. It is quite unbelievable. If any has ever been there they’ll know what I mean. Robert Pires in his book wrote about a time where irate fans actually made it as far as the dressing room.

    If Nasri is coming to Arsenal Diouf had to make sure that signings that would placate the fans were in place first. Believe me, Marseille fans are a force.

    Good article but an injury prone player and inexperienced at that isn’t a lot of use to us. We need EXPERIENCE in capital letters, and i’ve got a horrible feeling it’s not coming in this summer as the boss said he’s going to spend his transfer kitty on the players we have. Meanwhile the majority of the others will be getting stronger yes! including Spurs, putting extra pressure on us to finish at least 4th next season. The Nasri deal was doomed from the start probably because we can’t pay him the wages he requires? if we can’t sign a middle priced player how are we going to keep up with the rest? so now i’d like to see some kind of takeover or else we’ll become stronger holding all the others up above us in the league. Gawd I hope i’m wrong about Nasri and he signs this week otherwise it’ll be so disappointing!, and i’m also beginning to wish that we’d have stayed at Highbury at least we’d have had some money behind us…Remember one bad season, just look what we could lose and still with the millstone of the new stadium hanging round our necks!.

    I imagine them achievements and 3 Premier Leagues, 3 FA Cups and a team of invincibles buys you some leeway..

    History mate. good history but history none the less. How long do you allow an indivdual to use a football club for his own experiement? Anyway Cesc will be off next season. Can you imagine a player of his class standing around watching the manager buy in useless twats like this Emily Bishop and showing all the ambition of a lower league team with no money?

    I do understand your fustrations but we were a win away from the league title and also a dodgy ref away from going further in europe, keep the faith, he bought dummies in the good days you will always buy some shit with the policy he has but it also reaps rewards as well..

    What makes me laugh is Cygan saying “I have heard that Arsenal are interested in him,” the Frenchman said on RMC. “That proves how good he is, as they rarely make mistakes.” He was definately one of those rare mistakes

    My frustration is born out of Wenger and Friar clearly lying to the fans back in May. AW said we were buying in 2-3 weeks and that fans would be pleased with what they saw. He also said a defender was needed to deal with our “high ball” weakness. To that he changed his mind mid June. Also May Ken Friar said to a packed shareholders meeting that he had just come off the phone to confirm a transfer deal. All fucking lies. Thats why the frustration. This nasri thing wont happen, too much money,that you can be sure of and if by miracle it did it would again prove what a bunch of inept negotiaters we have become since Dein left.Also to allow Marseilles to dictate the announcement of a player we have allegedly just forked out 13m for is nothing short of laughable and pathetic.

    delaying the announcement for Marseille builds relationships with clubs, its better to be onside with certain clubs that we may deal with in future but I don know what you are saying, saying we would be appeased around ticket renewel time was quite cheap..

    Dein was a great transfer negotiater?

    Bollocks he was.

    Wiltord, Edu were both allowed to run down their contracts coz he never re-signed em.

    Its funny, once someone has fucked off, people forget how shite they were too.

    Wenger decides on whos contracts are renewed and what player he wants. It was Wenger who allowed them to run down their contracts. Its Wenger who only offers players like Wiltord and Pires 1 year extentions. Get your facts right before you talk bollox. Dein was top class with transfer deals.

    Spike, your spot on about Dein. Its a myth that he was a great negotiator, we have to remember his negatives as well as positives. While he backed Arsene 100% in transfers he also voted against Ashburton Grove and wanted us to move to Wembley.

    I CANT REALLY UNDERSTAND WHAT WENGER IS UP TO.
    WE ARE NOT MAKING ANY PROGRESS. INSTEAD OF GOING FOR PLAYERS LIKE DAVID SILVER WHO ALREADY HAVE THE XPERIENCE OF PLAYING ON THE BIG STAGE. HOW LONG CAN WE CONTINUE 2 GROOM PLAYERS AND FINALLY GIVE THEM XTRA 2YEARS TO GET MATURE AND WIN THE LEAGUE. ARE WE SEROUS?

    I dont see why people are comparing Nasri to Ribery? Marseille never came out and said they had agreed a fee with us for Ribery. Wenger even came out and said he didnt want to sign Ribery, whereas he has come out and said he wants Nasri.

    We need to sort out our goalkeeping options because I dont think Almunia and Fabianski are of Arsenal quality.
