Arsenal To Defend Unbeaten Run Against Chelsea

Neil Banfield’s Reserves side will begin the defence of their seven game unbeaten run at home to Chelsea on the 1st of September.

Arsenal confirmed the announcement of the Reserves League South fixtures for the coming season today, and also that the club will continue to use Barnet FC’s Underhill stadium as the youngsters home ground. September concludes with two tricky away matches in the form of Portsmouth and Aston Villa, a true test of the sides credentials to win the title. The campaign comes to a close on April 6th, with an away match against Tottenham.

West Brom, Hull City and Stoke have been promoted to the Premiership, with Reading, Derby, and Birmingham City relegated. The three relegated sides all played in Reserves League South last year, and will be replaced with West Brom and Stoke. Hull City will not be making the jump, so the fixtures have been reduced from 18, to 16.

Next years Premier League season will include 7 substitutes, and as the Reserves is an extension of the Premier League, it is expected that sides will be able to include more players in the squad. This should allow for more of the Under 18 boys to get an earlier taste of football amongst professional players.

Having 7 subs next season will be very useful to us given the number of young players we have craving first team exposure. By the way J what do you think about Arsenal touting Ade around and do you think he will be replaced from within or by someone like Diogo/Huntelaar.

Are a max of 16 games enough for the reserve squad?

How will they cope when they have to play 40+ with the first team

Surely these guys need more football

We cant expect the U18 to play on a Sat morning, and then the following Monday

16 games aren’t enough hence the reason why we’re pleased with the fact that we can use some of them for the first team albeit as a sub.

Around January you see the squad cut down with international duty and players going on loan. So they are always playing, plus carling cup fixtures.

Last year we had four games in 8 days so its very compeitive.

Did Sidwell play against us in the reserves last season? I can´t wait for him to score against us for Villa next season, it just always happens. But 7 subs will be great. I guess some of this years U-16 players will be on the bench for the reserves next season.

Hull are in the reserve league, but will play in the northern section.
There are a lot of northern clubs this year and I don’t think any of them were prepared to move to the southern section, leaving the north with 1 team too many and the south with 1 team too few

i hope its not true, but they can’t pull out once they already bought them. no arsenal will never sign nasri huntelaar and veloso on the same day, if we just signed the 3 over the summer it would already be amazing. Jay i know this is not really your speciality but what do you think about huntelaar? and nordveit is my favorite player how far is he from a starters place?

hey JS, best arsenal blog on the net mate. have you got any plans of doing an article looking into the somewhat turbulent times we’re going through. I’ve always been one to say Wenger knows but we’ve never had such uncertainty over so many first team players, regardless of how good or bad anyone may think they are, surely it’s a bad thing?

    Cheers Max.

Well thats first team issues, and i dont really like to talk about them on the blog. I believe that every summer there is always a saga, but every year everything seems to sort its self out.

The best advice i can give is dont get too excited when a player joins, and not too dissapointed when one leaves.

Couldent agree more, two names: Henry and Baptista.

Great that it ends away against the spuds, i just hope the side are still in contention for the title or even champions already by then. Ur right about september, Villa, Portsmouth and Chelsea are three of our main rivals when it comes to the reserve league, if we can coem through all three of those it’ll be massive in terms of stepping towards winning the title. To be honest thou id take a kid breaking throu next season to go on to become an Arsenal great anyday over the reserve side winning the title.

I very much fall in line with the view that it should be individual development rather than results we look to create at that level, but u cnt help but feel that results somewhat come hand in hand with good results, not nessesarily titles but strong league standings, we had that last season and hopefully, with largly the same side, all a season older, a season more experianced, we can go one better this season and really push for the top of the table.

“hope its not true, but they can’t pull out once they already bought them” – I also hope its not true, however Im sure if these people did pull out all they would lose is their deposit.

The property slump is badly timed as far as AFC are concerned.

Half of that has not happened (yet anyway) and the transfer window has a long way to go. Im not worried in the least. Come the end of season we will be there or thereabouts.

According to Young Guns, who are the most exciting prospects coming through if we were to put out a squad of prospect now? Undoubtedly there is Nortveit, Traore, Denilson and seemingly Wilshere. Otherwise are there any surprises coming? Myself I am surprised to hear the talk about Randall maybe leaving. What are your opinions on Song and Denilson coming through?

I also have one question that may seem a bit challenging. I find that a lot of English prospects are thrown up to be new Maradonas and saviors of the English football team at an early age. As seen with the new tennis hero who won the u-14 at Wimbledon. This may be one of the biggest reasons why players as Bentley and Pennant did not succeed, while others are given less pressure and more time, hence ultimately succeed. See for example Walcott, who I see as a great success for his age compared to f.ex. Ashley Cole at that time. In much of the media he is put up as a failure already and an example of Wengers failure to produce British talent, which is absolutely crap of course. Who can deal with such pressure of the English youngsters coming through?

I reckon Gibbs and Randall will go out on loan again this year. I think Gibbs to Norwich on loan is in the pipeline. Randall should be loaned to WBA as they play (or at least try playing) the game the right way. J, AW surprised us all by putting Flamini in last year when nobody expected it. I’m thinking Lansbury is a big lad, he knows what the english game is all about and seems the type to compliment cesc better than most may, do u think its out of the question him getting a chance to prove himself there next year? Obviously u have to be cautios with youngsters but some actually thrive being under such intense pressure and it brings the best out of them (i.e Cesc). Or am i losing it?

Well… sadly its probably only the kids that dont get noticed until they really make an impact, i meen Rooney dealt with all the attention well, but if u look at some1 like Luke Moore, i swear hes got worse since hes got older…

true, both the Moore brothers and Samba have not had the expected improvement. With Wenger he seems to be full of surprises, so I expect the unexpected. Lansbury will be interesting to see as I have never seen him myself, hope you are into something there TJ. Cesc was really amazing coming through and cope with all that pressure. Seems Walcott as well have the strength to cope with it. Kerrea Gilbert sent to Leicester on loan sadly showed amazing talent just for the air to go out of the balloon.
