Arsenal's Pre-Season Training – Analysis

Arsenal will step up their training sessions this week, with the first pre-season friendly against Barnet just 5 days away.

The Gunners welcomed back several first team players today, with the star attraction being Emmanuel Adebayor. However, Carlos Vela made his long awaited return to Arsenal, after being granted a extension on his holiday. This means many of the youth players who trained with the first team, will now return to the Reserves.

The first week of training has seen many of the younger starlets called up to train with Arsène Wenger’s men, as the team eased themselves back into action. After a warm-up with Tony Colbert, the squad would then split into groups for 5-a-side sessions.

White –
Sagna – Fonte – Barazite – Denilson – Randall

Blue –
Lansbury – Ramsey – Clichy – Nordtveit – J.Hoyte

Yellow –
G.Hoyte  – Walcott – Rodgers – Diaby – Wilshere

Green –
Simpson – Coquelin – Pedro – Bendtner – Dunne

From the ArsenalTV video of the sessions, Rui Fonte was wearing the number 44, and Gavin Hoyte had number 46. A possible sign they may be ear marked for Carling Cup football. The first day of training always brings some strange hair cuts, and Nacer Barazite’s ponytail was certainly interesting!.

One thing was very impressive, and that’s even though it was just a training game, the boys stuck to the same principles, and played attractive football.

Interesting. I wonder what’ll happen to Jay Simpson this season…loaned out again, kept at the club, or sold?

Magneto – Its an interesting one, im sure plently of clubs would have been keen to sign him, maybe Wenger wants to keep him.

Dutchmaster – I dont think so, and if they are, then they are a breach of Arsenal’s copyright and will probably be taken down.

Vela & Adebayor only returned today.

I dont want Arshavin, he is a known “party boy” in Russia, i just do not think he is the type of person or player we need.

thanks jay do u think that adebayor might stay since milan are about to buy ronaldinho and barca dont have the funds cause they have just spent 42m on helb and alves they need to sell eto for them to bid for adebayor so this is an intresting space

i would be very upset to see Ade go to another club! jus give the guy more money and dont b so cheap! u would rather sacrifice a unique player than give him a better contract. u wouldn’t think twicw about spending millions on 15 Year old, so why not just spread that sum over a new 5 year contract for manny! we need to keep hold of this guy and not sell him for half price like some papers are reporting. u do not sell ur most valuable assets for half the price, even if it is true and he wants to leave! would milan sell kaka for half price? is this not the club that sold a clapped out motor the chelsea for 30m!

David – yep, i think we have to.

Im sure the boss has his targets, we are only 14 days into the window, and already we have been fairly active.

louis – yep i do, i cannot see him leaving due to our valuation, and the fact the other two clubs are looking for a bargin, and Arsenal will not let them have one.

thats what i think, David. A centre half of exp[erience and abillity. I for one am happy with the rest. Arshavin is not good enough, we have others in theat position who are as good.

Hi, i am a regular reader of your column and find the youth players inside track very informative, after all they are our future and its nice to know who is coming through. Barnet on sat cant come soon enough for me, as its an annual thing for the lads to meet up for a few swift halfs, and see some of the first team, new signings and younger players in action. Do you know for sure exactly who did report for training today ?

Aston Villa boss Martin O’Neill has dismissed the reports of Arsenal trying to hijack Liverpool top-target Gareth Barry, and reportedly instructed the Reds to up their offer for the England midfielder, in an attempt to put an end to the transfer saga.

With the Gunners having lost Mathieu Flamini and now Gilberto looking likely to leave the Emirates Stadium with Panathinaikos and Everton linked, Arsene Wenger is now looking to bring in a central midfielder and reports over the weekend claimed Barry was the target with Justin Hoyte set to be thrown in as the makeweight.

But O’Neill, who reportedly wants £17m plus Steve Finnan from the Reds for Barry transfer, denied there is much substance in the reported Gunners interest in the wantaway Villa captain.

He is quoted in the Birmingham Mail as saying: “It is not true. The situation is very clear. I and Steve Walford know Pat Rice (Wenger’s assistant), and Pat phoned Steve to ask how far the Liverpool thing had gone and that they might show an interest. But the conversation was not very long. There has not been ‘lengthy negotiation’ at all. Absolutely not.

“In fact the conversation, when we discussed our position with Liverpool, Arsenal said: ‘That’s fine’ and they’ll: ‘let us know’. That is exactly what happened.”

Pogrebnyak is a monster. My mate is a Zenit fan and would be loath to see him leave the club for anyone. Tall and lanky, he has a great scoring record for his club in league and Europe (UEFA Cup).

Able to score with head and both feet, he is an out-and-out striker. I was told if it wasn’t for his injuries before EURO 08, that he was to be Russia’s lone forward with Pavluchenko pushed back into midfield.

I was just thinking how great it was to have Wenger as manager.

No other manager is so difficult to second guess, the media are always frustrated by Wenger because he is far more intelligent than them.

They love people like Jose and Fergie because they can predict their actions, put them into boxes, guess who they will sign. With Wenger the media know as much as the man at the bus stop, and that’s brilliant because we never know what will happen next!

Abnet arsenal, no its not nice at the moment for fans because we are kept in the dark. However as David said, we could have a new unknown star like Eduardo.

Wenger is a magician he can pull a rabbit out of the hat on any given day, which is what makes the summer exciting as well as frustrating.

I completely agree with Arsen’s plan of not baying superstars but some time name is scarier than talent only. Remember in last months Euro 08 games how Cecs has that Charisma of a huge player when he got the chance against Russia he almost made them shiver

I agree that Cesc deserves a quality partner in CM, every season he has played with a different CM partner and to get the best out of him we have to maintain some stability for him.

However quality does not mean big names-as Wenger has stated previously.
