Arsenal XI V Boreham Wood – Friendly – Match Preview

Arsenal wrap up their pre-season preparations this evening with the once traditional friendly against Non-League Boreham Wood at Meadow Park.

The fixture used to be a regular in the Gunners calender – as Arsenal’s lady’s side also play at Meadow Park – but last year the game was put on the back burner. However, it’s back this evening and promises to be an exciting and interesting clash.

Last time out saw a comfortable victory, with Nacer Barazite, Fran Merida, Kieran Gibbs, James Dunne and Abu Ogogo featuring as newly signed scholars. Fran and Nacer were amongst the scorers, and the pair are both in the squad, and both expected to start.

All but two – Fran Merida (International Duty) and Rhys Murphy (Not Selected) – have been involved with the first-team this summer, and all will look to show their improvement from last season. Fran and Simpson were both out on loan last term, and they too will also be keen to make a firm impression on the manager.

Kieran Gibbs, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and Jack Wilshere are not in contention following the Amsterdam Tournament, but the side will have a strong and relatively experienced feel for a youth game.

Predicted Starting XI

Mannone
Rodgers – Nordtveit (c) – G.Hoyte – Steer
Lansbury  – Dunne – Merida – Watt
Simpson – Barazite

Subs – Szczesny, Bartley, Ogogo, Frimpong, Murphy, Fonte.

Prediction – Arsenal 4-0 Boreham Wood

Kick off at Meadow Park is at 7.30pm UK time. The fixture is live on Arsenal TV, Arsenal TV Online and Setanta Sports, or should you have neither of these, a full Match Report will be available immediately after the full time whistle.

Everybody here has a contract until at least next summer. If we release anybody we must pay up their contract until it’s due date.

So it costs us money to release players. All these boys will stat until at least next year, where most of them will leave then when their deals expire.

Yep, expect the team to change at half time.

I would expect plently of goals, but Boreham Wood are a decent side. They will set up well and be quite physical with us, so we must keep out heads down and play our football.

    Borehamwood are a great team.

It is 1/2 a mile from my house, and my son gets free tickets as he goes to school in Borehamwood.

I think it is a wee bit unfair of Wenger to have left Barazite out of most of the big friendly games when he has included the likes of Landsbury and Randall (both whom I like) who have not performed at all in any of the games they have played – Landsbury looked ok in the game he played half at right back.

Do you still think Jay will be sold or loaned out again after the performances he has put in?

I can’t believe we are going into arguably the most important game of the season with Ramsey and Denilson centre midfield.

He’s been saying all week ‘we can’t cope with another midfield injury’ – well now we’ve got one.

We should still go through obvioulsy but IF we go out, Wenger has some serious questions to answer on how we could possibly be this short in midfield and why on earth we have let 3 CM’s leave the club and not replace them as a matter of urgency.

I’m not talking about ‘We’ll sign someone fo the right value if we can’. I’m talking about a statement like ‘We have lost 3 big CM’s and we will be signing one before the start of the Champions League campaign’

He is taking a massive massive gamble and even if it comes off and we go through, this risk is far too big.

This is forgetting the fact that Kolo is out and so is Senderos which means it’s between Djourou and Hoyte to start with Gallas.

Our small squad has been decimated before the season has even startet… does Wenger not see!!??

I agree over the risk over a CDM midfielder as it has just been shown how much of a gamble it was. Wenger keeps saying we still want one more body but he hasnt gone out an bought the other midfielder.

Can anyone see that even if the gamble comes off, we should not be gambling with such an important position before such an important game.

The signing of a CM should have been made a month ago so that they could have taken part in pre-season and link up with the team.

Now, even if we make a signing next week, there’s gonna be all the usual rubbish about how he never had a full pre-season and he needs time to adapt blah blah blah.

It’s already too late in my opinion even if we go through – we should not have put ourselves in this position

Kolo5 – I agree that it’s a very important match but don’t forget that Denilson and Ramsey have showed they are capable of playing for us against the biggest Europeans teams. Why panic now that we play against FC Twente. I am not underestimating them but there’s no need to worry. Wenger will sign a midfielder shortly after the Twente Match. He knows the necassity and he will use the money available to get either Gokhan Inler or Miguel Veloso. The latter would be a for me a better signing because of his versatilty, he can fill gaps when further unjuries occure.

As I said, we should get through anyway – I’m not panicking but I think it’s disgraceful that we are risking our Champions League season.

Denilson and Ramsey have done well in pre season but they should not be starting a Champions League qualifier that defines our whole season.

There was no need for us to taek a gamble – we should have signed a CM weeks and months ago.

To repeat, I’m not saying we are gonna lose but I am saying we should not be gambling with our season

I’m actually not Worried, Ramsey and Denilson is great quality, and with the caliber of players around them, I think they will rise to the occasion and make a good showing, and help us get a couple of away goals.

Wenger’s starting to annoy me with all these promises… promising 3 players in 3 weeks and then we end up waiting months for just the 1. And then again after every pre-season match he says “we lacked expierence in midfield”, well do something about it then!! This is the only time we can!

Now Cesc is out of the season opener so now we left with even less expierence. We desperatly need a CDM.

I think we will get past Twente, even with the team that will play this match, but its not this game im worried about… It the big games this season im worried… what would we do if we ended up with Denilson and Ramsey vs United at old trafford?? We’d be stuffed!

i think with no dave dein, wenger have trouble to do transfer deal. for example this kind of situation, wenger said he wants to make a signing but to busy to do so. if dein is here, he can settle transfer deal while wenger concentrate preparing squad for this game so by the time arsenal match againts west brom we already got a new midfielder. but at current state, a signing most likely to be made next week, after west brom match and hopefully before second league match as well as 2nd leg with twenty. for now, just hope that denilson and ramsey put in good performance and bring comfortable lead for 2nd leg.

I aint gonna lie, im upset by this, Wenger knows obviously is always the statement, but i wonder if he knew Senderos, Toure, Diaby, Nasri and Fabregas would all be out of tomorrow’s game along with Eduardo and Rosicky, and he knew Song would be at the olympics.

If we lose, we only have our self to blame, i have seen Ramsey and Denilson play together and they can do it, but if we go 1-0 down, they struggle to hold onto the ball, or possess the experience to calm the play down when the opposition has a good 10-20 minute spell in a game.

Thats not their fault, its just a simple case of EXPERIENCE, and if we dont get a result, i dread to think what it would do to the confidence of the two young lads.

I understand Wenger not signing players for the sake of it, but hes had since the Liverpool Champions league game, to know we had to strengthen, we all knew Flamini was going, so if Wenger saw the need to replace Hleb why not Flamini? How can you go from we need to strengthen in defence, to now im happy with my options when you haven’t signed anyone huh?

I have trusted Wenger since he came to Arsenal and he has never seen as wrong, so i will show faith again, but i do feel, we have been left short unessacerily.

Guess its all a part of Wengers Genius, i say that with my fingers firmly crossed wishing us a good result tomorrow night.

So we go in to our most important game of the season without Fabregas, Nasri, Senderos, Toure, Diaby and Rosicky
This is laughably ridiculous. Our centre midfield will be……who exactly? Denilson, who is a fine player but not quite top top quality and…………………? Eboue? Randall?? Our centre defence will be Gallas and Djourou? Good enough partnership? How often have they played together?
I know you’ll all say calm down it’s Twente not Real Madrid, yeah I get it but come one!! Already our paper thin squad has been reduced even further!!! This is a game we MUST NOT TAKE LIGHTLY. It’s a game we simply HAVE TO win, or at the very least avoid defeat.
I accept that even without the above named players we should still have enough but what a pathetic start to the season this is already. We ALL KNEW this was the case, we simply don’t have enough strength in depth.
Hope Mark Randall is ‘up for it’ tomorrow night cos the little sod is starting a crucial game for us.
    Almunia.
    Sagna, Gallas, Djourou, Clichy,
    Walcott, Denilson, Randall/Ramsay, Eboue
    Adebayor, van Persie.

Hmmm Chelsea away, Man U away, that team will walk it……provided no-one else gets injured…………………..PATHETIC.

As with all the people here, I’m a die-hard Gunner but enough is enough!!! We get that Wenger wants to maintain his “unearth-cheap-players-and-turn-them-into-world-stars” status but he has to draw a line somewhere!!! It’ll be fine if he makes an exemption from this philosophy but now he just has to part with the money and get a quality player no matter the price!!!! He claims that he has enough money (to which we can add the FREE £7 million from Bentley!!!) so why the hell can’t he just go out and buy a Veloso or someone like that!!! PLEASE WENGER!!! As much as I don’t want to say it, I’m beginning to think that maybe if we were to fail to get into the CL, Arsene would change his damn ways!!!! *steam out of ears*

    Fonte with two good finishes.
Lansbury has been very active on the right hand side. I suspect Wenger/Bandfield is trying to develop his game more deploying him on the right. He is an England U19 international…big things are expected. Maybe when he’s got the ability to play on the right consistently…he’ll use those qualities to move back in the middle.

Fran Merida has had a two decent shots on target.
