August 08 – Player Of The Month – Luke Freeman

Luke Freeman is Young Guns Player Of The Month for August 2008, after the former Gillingham striker began his first full season with the Gunners in fantastic form.

Following his exploits for the England Under 16’s in the Nordic Cup, Freeman returned to London raring to go. He trained with the first-team before earning a start for Steve Bould’s Under 18’s in the Academy League opener against Everton.

Two fantastic strikes from the diminutive forward helped seal a 3-1 victory, with Luke hitting back at any doubters over his talents. The newly signed scholar would then travel to the Zinedine Zidane Tournament in France, where he continued his lethal scoring rate with the winner against Paris Saint-Germain.

He would then put in another hard shift in the French sunshine as Arsenal reached the knock out stages, and eventually the final.

Freeman’s excellent attitude has seen him over come difficult challenges in his career, but the Datford born hit-man is on the right path to forge himself a career at the Emirates.

J, on a scale of 10 with 10 being the best, how great are Luke’s chances of becoming a first team player in the future, in your opinion?

JS, a few months back you said Freeman was not good enough to make it. Has his current form changed your opinion on him?

Yes, when he first arrived he looked very very average. Now he has found himself a regular spot in the team, he is showing what he can do.

I still have doubts over him long term, but he is making good progress.

As for Afobe, it’s too early yet to say anything on him.

Exactly, although Afobe has been brilliant at all other levels, there is still a huge gap between any type of football and first team football.

So did they win the semi-final? also is there any news on potential signings….for some reason i still can’t see wenger signing anyone over 23 and it’s doubtful we will no much about him….i have a sneaking thought about Hamsik at Napoli, nothing to do with any paper talk and please no one think for one second we will sign him, just someone i think suits the Wenger model.

There his a huge gap between Under 16’s and Under 18’s, we should take it one step at a time, but he is certainly an exciting prospect.

oh, but did you notice Vieira was in the Emirates during the Newcastle match? I was wondering why he was there…

P.S. Sorry about how I didn’t know about that thing earlier. I only became an Arsenal fan last year when they started playing amazingly (well, the first time I saw them, at least).

Who would possibly say it’s make or break for Sunu? He’s in his first full season with us and is a regular for France and the U-18’s. He’s a bloody 16 year old, how can it be a make or break season for him?

I bet you half of our reserves players will end up at teams like Villa and Everton and do well against us.

Hea actually 17 but i still agree with you. Hes far too young to be written off already and any1 who saw him on his good days last season will know hes got something, and if hes got something hes worth a bit of patience. Same goes for Fonte who every1 slagged off last season and over the summer, hes looking good now. Just shows, u cant treat a youth player the same as a high profile first team player, no matter how highly rated they are.

Well done to Luke, hes got potential, and if he can show some consistancy this season which is where i feel he fell down a bit last season hes got a good chance of getting a few reserve games and getting under Wenger’s eye a bit more.
