Freeman Strike Gives Arsenal Win In Cannes Tournament

Steve Gatting’s Arsenal Under 16’s got off to a perfect start in the Zinedine Zidane Tournament this morning with a 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain.

The winner came via the in form Luke Freeman, who dispatched his third goal in two fixtures against the highly rated Parisians. Arsenal have taken a strong squad to the competition which is being held in Cannes, with new signing Oğuzhan Özyakup included in the travelling party. Contrary to reports Ignasi Miquel has not travelled.

An experimental 3-4-3 formation should bring plenty of goals, with Oliver Nicholas (1.85cm) providing the Gunners with a strong and powerful defensive spine. Nico Yennaris, Daniel Boateng and Alex Witham are amongst the substitutes, and look set to get their chance as the tournament progresses.

Frimpong (c) – Özyakup – Meade
Banton – Afobe – Freeman

PSG boasted young forward Jimmy Kamghain, who as we exclusively revealed last week is a target for the Arsenal. But it was a forward at the other end who caught the eye, with Freeman now proving a big hit since his switch from Gillingham last summer. Under 15 starlet Nick Meade was impressive on the flank, and looks set for a bright season.

Emmanuel Frimpong will skipper the side, meaning both he and Luke will be missing for tomorrow’s Under 18 clash against Wolves. A full preview will follow shortly for that game.

The picture is not from this tournament, it’s the Atlanta Cup squad, which is very similar.

It’s good to see the youngster playing against international opposition. I’m concerned sometimes that we talk up the youngsters so much at the moment that we fail to realise that some of the other big teams have the same quality coming through.

Have you had much of a chance to compare our talent with that at teams like Chelsea, Man U, Liverpool and Spurs?

Our bunch of Under 16’s is probably the best around. Once we get Miquel in the squad we would have a brilliant side.

Liverpool and Chelsea doesn’t have too many good youngsters coming up, from what ive seen/heard/read. Both have some decent foreign talents, but no one who can compare themselves to our best.

Man U have some talent, but no extreme ones.

I think we have the best bunch of talents, without doubt. Wilshere, Merida, Barazite, Ramsey, Nordtveit and so on. Players I believe will make it to top premiership quality if things goes their way and they work hard.

Liverpool sign around 10 youngsters a year for their academy, it’s doubtful that another Gerrard will be found.

United have one or two decent players but as mention nobody special. Chelsea have a couple of good kids, but not that many.

Freeman is starting to prove his worth now. People were doubting him but I have faith in him. Hope he does well in the future.
P.S.Also u were right about Bischoff as an Attacking Midfielder. He says thats’s his preferred position but Wenger may think different about his best position. He also said Fabregas can become a good at defending.

JS won’t you change your name now, that she left for chelscum? i can understand the move cause now she can earn an easy living from football, so not to blame her, but you can’t wear a name of a chelsea player.. Maybe mine?

I beg to differ about Chelsea not having any decent young players coming through because Michael Woods, Jacob Mellis, Nana Seth Ofori-Twamasi are all quality young football players, but the real kid to watch out for is a 15 year old left footed attacking central midfieder and England 16’s player called Josh McEachran because he is a massive talent IMO

Freeman is doing good but you have to realize that this is U-16. Not trying to make him look bad, just to put it in perspective. He will have to do good this season and break into the reserves. I can´t see why he shouldn´t be able to make it in front of Sunu.

Rosicknote it would not be unusal for Nicholas to stop growing now.The young Spaniard joining when he turns 16 could be a real monster though being 192cm at 15

Good win, its tounaments like this that can really gadge how well our academy has developed over the last few years. PSG produce alot of good players so if we can beat them with the players we are developing, we are doin summin right.

Nice to see Freeman carry on his goal scoring start to his season aswell, good end up being a pretty good player.
