Frimpong & Afobe Goals Give Arsenal Win Over OGC Nice

Steve Gatting’s Arsenal Under 16’s booked their place in the knock out stages of the Zinedine Zidane Tournament yesterday evening with a 2-1 win over OGC Nice.

After a 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain yesterday, the Gunners came into the game knowing a win would secure their place in the semi-finals against Girondins de Bordeaux.

Mann
Byles – Nicholas – Brisnal
Frimpong (c) – Aneke – Özyakup – Meade
Banton – Afobe – Freeman

Captain Emmanuel Frimpong gave Arsenal the lead, before Nice levelled the scores setting up a nervous finish. But free scoring hit-man Benik Afobe came up with the goods to send Gatting’s boys through to the semi’s. It’s testament to the Young Guns, as they are the only English side in the competition, and the only foreign outfit to make the second stage of the tournament.

Should they manage to secure a victory over Bordeaux this evening, they will face the winners of Olympique Marseille V Lyon in the final on Sunday. The fixture is a 9pm kick off at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin.

J, what’s the hubbub on Afobe? He sounds exciting but I don’t think I’ve ever seen even the natural yootewb clips. He record reminds me of Bojan but whats his movement like, his passing ability, technique etc.?

Saivet is about 18 i think? this in an Under 16 tournament. Benik is very promising, tall, strong, quick feet, and a great finisher.

Hopefully he can play some Under 18 games this season and then we can judge him abit better because that’s a more compeitive level.

But yes he has shown some great signs.

It’s a strange formation Arsenal are playing. Are they playing wing backs and if not does that mean we don’t have the best full backs coming through?

We are missing three important defenders in Rhema Obed, Daniel Boateng and Ignasi Miquel so it’s through lack of options rather than quality.

luke freeman kinda reminds me of roy makaay, without the obvious arial threat. very techical player with a lot of work rate on him.a real live wire. definately the most promising english youngster at arsenal at the moment. you can quote me on that.

Good, hope they win it. Looks like they have more than a small chance what with two wins in a row.

Cant wait to see some of these young players in action for the U18s this season. Especially looking forward to seeing Ozyakup and Afobe.
