Özyakup & Afobe On Target For Arsenal At Coventry

Whilst Arsenal’s Under 18’s suffered the disappointment of a 1-1 draw to Coventry at London Colney on Saturday, Steve Gatting’s Under 16’s got revenge on the Sky Blues by thrashing them 4-2 at Hale End.

Summer signings Ignasi Miquel and Oğuzhan Özyakup made starts in arguably one of the most feared Under 16 teams in the country, which boasted England Under 16 new boys Chuks Aneke and Joshua Rees. Captain Benik Afobe was also named in that squad, he would be given the task to lead the line against a physical City side.

A double from Afobe set the young Gunners well on their way to the victory, before further strikes from Jernade Meade and Oğuzhan Özyakup made the win safe. Coventry always looked a threat and found a way past Charlie Mann on two occasions, but the win always seemed assured.

It finished 4-2, leaving many of these youngsters knocking on Steve Bould’s door ahead of forthcoming Academy fixtures.

If Benik is so good, Why is he still playing for the U16’s?

Because of player congestion. If Benik plays for the Under 18’s then Murphy or Freeman must miss out, they have scholarships and pro terms whilst Benik is stil on school boy forms.

I personally think that he will be promoted to the U18’s team because Rhys Murphy will be playing for the reserve team sooner or later so that means a space will have opened up in the Arsenal U18’s team for Benik Afobe take because you cannot hold back talent IMO

Is Benik in your opinion J a better long term prospect than Murphy, Sunu and Freeman. Which ones have a realistic chance of making it in the future.

Players are picked by Steve Bould on ability alone. He doesn’t pick a player ahead of another just because they are older.

abc – That’s wrong, age comes are a priority. Benik will not get in the Under 18 team because older players are ahead of him. Scholars and Professionals earn money so they are picked over school boys.

How could the Wolves lad have scored against Arsenal twice, if they lost 3-1? He’s in the new England u16 side by the way. Unusually Chelsea have four players – three with African type names.
